Since the start of the 2011 fundraising campaign Bitcoinn users complained over the fact that they were unable to use the currency they trusted to support a nonprofit they believe in. Wikimedia NYC is a chapter of the Wikimedia Foundation which runs Wikipedia, and it now allows Bitcoiners to use the platform they love to donate to a good cause

. In the past 24 hours alone, over 70BTC has been donated to Wikimedia NYC which will be used for hiring a full time staff member, help run educational outreach programs, and support free culture.

This is one small step toward universal acceptance of Bitcoin one large step closer toward the Wikimedia Foundation fully supporting Bitcoin for donations.

The Wikimedia NYC Bitcoin address is the following: 1F4Ka3nHH3Ef1P2f66AwLEqwHo6J9wFHKC

Welcome to the Bitcoin Forums, Peter.

It has been discovered in the Bitcoin100 (a fundraiser for charities) thread that anyone can edit the address on your homepage. Link.

Please make sure you get this page or that section specifically locked so that people can be certain their donations will go to Wikimedia NYC, and not some scumbag who changed the address.

That vulnerability was taken care of promptly after the community brought it to our attention, which reminds me.

I want to thank the community for all the help they have given us with this. We had a bit of a rocky start, but we seem to have been able to successfully use Bitcoin because of all the help people in the community have given us.

I'm referring to the front page, not the donation page.

https://nyc.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Home&oldid=456 (I reverted the change immediately).

Ah sorry, I thought you were referring to the main donation page. Fixed the issue. Thanks for pointing it out.  Smiley

Welcome aboard, Peter!

Not being very familiar with the structure of Wikimedia, et al, it took me a minute to get a grasp on just what the whole chapter thing was. After reading on the NYC chapter site there and some other info about them in general, I was very pleased. It certainly seems that donating to the chapters aims closer to the source of origin for all the wonderful and informative content on Wikis. I am glad you took the time to notice the generous people who noticed all of the generous Wiki people who spend so much of their personal time to help others!

Knowledge truly is power. Now, if we can just get more people to actually read.   Wink

  Cheers,
    Derek

If you're not excited by the idea of being an early adopter 'now', then you should come back in three or four years and either tell us "Told you it'd never work!" or join what should, by then, be a much more stable and easier-to-use system.

It is being worked on by smart people.  -DamienBlack
