Cronos (Crypto.com) halts its entire blockchain

A lending protocol called Tectonic (the largest one on Cronos network) has been exploited for 75M $.

The exploiter has managed to move 6M $ to Ethereum (bridged out) before Cronos decided to halt its blockchain fully.

1/100 for TectonicFi team due to the lack of interaction with their users and update related to the security incident. 80/100 for Cronos team because they halt chain just after incident happened. Honestly, this one is getting hacked due to the oracle manipulation, and plenties of cases related to the same trick happened before. This feels oracle related hack will be a never ending story.

Beside that the interesting part is that the hacker ever offered his hacking method before he executed it, and i found there was someone who helped him, which was also a member from Cronos discord.

Not that a network tied to an exchange would care about decentralization anyway.

All of CEX blockchains only run by some validators. There would never be a decentralization on it. Any claim about cex blockchain being decentralized is bull shit.

It’s genuinely funny to see users of their platform posting those sarcastic messages, revealing that their community isn't actually all that active. I find it hard to believe that they're building a platform in the crypto industry, where trust & community are actually everything. But they aren't really good at either of those things. BTW, Cronos blockchain resumed operations around 4 hours ago.

I'm thankful that Cronos halted their blockchain. That got me thinking about DeFi and its risks.

4 years ago, the depegging of UST on Terra Blockchain caused the entire DeFi winter. Back then, validators were slow to react and UST and Luna spiralled to its death.

Now, due to the hack, Cronos halted their blockchain, simply because Cronos Labs runs the biggest validator on chain and they have the power to do so. They also rolled back their chain to before the hack happened.

Cronos Labs lost 6 million USD because this had been bridged to Ethereum. BUT BUT BUT Customers' funds were preserved. That is the power of centralization, I guess.

The funny think's that they consciously warn others about this, yet seem unconcerned that it could easily become a reality, with their own tokens now the target.

Tectonic's own documentation warns that low-liquidity assets can be particularly susceptible to price manipulation.

Greed can indeed blind a person to dangers they were aware of from the very start. Even if the leak is massive, the ship must sail on; such is business in the modern era.

They surely wouldn't care about decentralization, they have history of reversing the 70 billion burn by dumping 3.2B CRO proposal vote at the last hour from Crypto.com linked cluster, diluting the existing holders.
It wouldn't be surprising if they halted the entire blockchain longer than needed considering their past shady behaviour and even rolling back the entire blockchain. As an investor, I'd stay away from their projects.

Repeating the same hack in the same way across multiple blockchains is deliberate negligence. If these platforms don't care about their security, I don't understand why they continue to be used.

Well, halting a Blockchain may sound reasonable, but the issue is that it could as well be used against the network. So I hope they don't use that to justify centralization.
It can be as bad as a decentralized network that does nothing about stolen coins on its network — no blacklisting to make the coins hard to spend or no confistication of proven stolen coins from their thieves.
The right approach is not to take the extremist route, or there should be a balance by keeping things decentralized and hard to compromise many keys at once, and even when single keys with lots of fund is compromised, it should be possible to do something about it without compromising the integrity of a decentralized system and its ideals.

I thought that it's the entire cronos that has been halted due to their own mistake or mishap.

But kudos on them on this one for being so reactive when there's an exploit that happens in their network.

DeFi always are being exploited this way and that's why I have not put any money on it anymore. And as of now, cronos chain seems to be back again in running, right?

The reason I never even dream of using such chains 
If they can be halted at any time, then they are not worthy of being any network that handles worldwide payments.

That being said. I will say this again. Most of the hacks around these blockchains, DeFi and so on, are being made easier using AI. How I wish we would have a comparison regarding hacks before and after AI became a thing and the amount of money lost between each of them. I am very certain there is a huge difference/change.

If same exploits always happened to multiple chains, this is actually points out that this is not accident anymore. Its huge failure to pay attention on the security of their chain or platform.

If they will not pay huge attention on their security and invest to tighten up their defense, the hackers will provably target their platform and find ways to exploit their system. The problems is despite of those exploit or hacking incident happen many people still trust their platform.

Once they notice that the platform or a chain is ignoring those basic security, best for people to be precautious, since same situation might repeatedly going to happen.
