Why are matches suspended in sports betting?

It is actually something I have seen myself during this lastest Football world cup. During the final match between Argentina and Spain, there were occasions in which odds were suspended.

It was mostly due to recalculating those odds because something significant had just happened during the match.
It is quite normal, and it is supposed to be a mechanism which allows the bookie to offer fair odds and discourage people from taking advantage of the market itself.

It is something which happens pretty much in all important football matches, and I assume it also happens in all important cricket matches.

It's mostly because of the weather and it affect games that are played outdoor. The question is what going to happen in your bet? For example, you bet on who's team are going to scored the first match. So if a team already scored and then the match is postponed, then your bet is a lost already.

But if your bet is like ML or handicap, once the game resume then your bet is on.

However, there could be some casinos that the moment that the game is cancelled or suspended, your bet is automatically voided.

I had my bet cancelled a few times due to suspended or postponed matches on football bets I made. Both are different. When the problem happens during the match, it's marked as suspended, but if it's before the match, then it's marked as postponed. I am not sure if other sports betting websites also have this standard.

However, there are no exact details on why the match is postponed or suspended. When it happens, I always check on Google what's the reason for that suspension or postponement. In my case, it happened mostly due to bad weather. In some cases, I found out that it was a force majeure caused by war in the country of the clubs and crowd trouble that made it difficult to create a controlled and safe environment.

At first, I thought those were the only reasons. But I read some of the other replies here saying it could be caused by other reasons, like technical problems from the bookmaker itself. For example, they failed to get stats, had the wrong odds, failed to connect with their data provider, etc.

This makes me wonder what would happen if your bet was cancelled due to these kinds of technical errors. I am not talking about live bets, because in that case, I believe you will still get paid if the bet is correct. But here I am asking about prematch bets. Like you have placed a bet on Team A because you believe 99.99% it's an easy win -> technical problem on the bookmaker's side -> bet cancelled before the match. In the end, Team A wins as you predicted, but the bet was cancelled before. In this case, I think there should be compensation, at least a free bet. But I doubt it's stated in the bookmaker's terms and conditions.

Match can actually be suspended due to many reasons and if you've been a sport man you should  be aware of some of the reason that can lead to the suspension of match, the reason for the suspension of a match may varies depending on the sport, for example the tennis can be suspended due to a serious wind that mostly causes obstruction in the game. Same applies to football a serious thunder stum or very uncomfortable  weather  condition  can lead to a suspension of a match or even abandoning of a match temporarily to be played to be played in a later day. A serious  violent  conduct  during  the time  of play is also another  reason  for the suspension  of a match

Most this happens for odds adjustments. Like if any new about a starting lineup (with a major impact on the team) get out, or for example somebody makes a big bet on some side, odds need to be recalculated so the sports book stays in profit no matter what outcome. For us players that' annoying sometimes, I even had a disadvantage because of that as well in the past. But nothing we can do about it, it is what it is since they can do whatever they want.
The most annoying for me is when this happens in live events where you might want to consider to cash out your bet. Once everything is suspended obviously the cash out option is also gone.

As far as I know sometimes the market is temporarily suspended even if there is a slight delay in receiving new data from the odds provider, If you wait a while, betting will resume and you will see that the odds have changed from before.  And the biggest reason is the weather, because if the game is stopped due to rain or any other reason, then the sportsbook can temporarily suspend the market so that no one can bet on the wrong odds based on old information. Things like this happen from time to time. A significant development might have occurred that could affect the match result, or the match might not be played at the scheduled time due to weather conditions.
If it were happening on just one site, we could attribute it to an issue with that specific site, but if it is occurring across all sites, then it is a general problem.

Conflict, dispute, and many other things can cause this, even the weather too, it wouldn't bothered even if I don't know what this was as a new gambler, if it's not available then it's not available.

I get your point of wanting to know though, but if affects no one, you can just find another place for your bet maybe it's available there, it shouldn't bother anyone, it's their choice for some reasons, no one is losing money

There can be many different reasons for a match to be stopped, starting with weather conditions, when they change so dramatically that it becomes impossible to continue the game, and ending with disturbances in the stands, when fans become too aggressive and could potentially harm other spectators. There can also be incidents on the pitch itself. There are many possible reasons.

And if I’m not mistaken, matches that are suspended are simply excluded from your bet, meaning that you get a refund.

Match can be suspended because of weather. If it is not weather, I can be because of conflict or dispute.

I do not really know about the match that you are referring to, but you should expect matches to be suspended at anytime. There are some that may not be resumed and the bet will be cancelled and your money will be credited back to your betting account.

I totally agree with those facts you have just pointed out because i don't see reasons of suspending a match in sports betting outside from bad weather conditions, conflict between players or if there are reasons that i can fully remember but i believe that these few points are the major causes that can influence any suspension in sports betting, i don't think that change of odds can really be a reason behind any suspension of matches, so my experience back then with suspended games, when the game have started and happen to end on half way, i do see a capture in that match, match interrupted due to bad weather conditions and some you will only see interrupted only.

If you can provide specific match then we can do a thorough research on why this match was suspended on casino betting platform. Probably, you are looking on multiple sportsbook that use the same odds provider that’s why it shows the same suspended status if the match itself is active physically.

Sportsbook has the right to suspend all the matches without giving specific reason to players.

They probably encounter technical error on the live feed that’s why they decided to stop offering the match. They do this suspension too even on the middle of the match if they encounter error their odds.

That is the "reason" they give you in general but behind that there is underground information that nasty or shady things can happen into the game. Odd providers know what you don't as they may know a meeting has taken place between the presidents of the two clubs and they may suspect a match or result fixing could have been set up in this meeting. I know where I live if two football club presidents of the local league have a meeting the game between those teams is immediately removed from betting.

Various reasons can influence or causes a match to be suspended just as it is well stated above by various users and that's very normal. However, i don't think its something we should panic over because definitely we aren't expecting matches to take hold in an unpleasant weather conditions like flood, unusual rain fall or heavy storm etc.

Again, there are some other important factors that can still stop a match from taken place. Like some quick emergency situation that really needs to be fix, injuries and many more. Because matches don't  just get suspended for no reason, something must have gone wrong before a match will be suspended.

Op, assuming it was only gambling site or casino that shows this, I would have said that maybe a large number of people has played the game with same option you are about to play because they may have the feeling that the game is going to boom since a lot of people are playing it. I have experienced this before when a bet punter drop a code, immediately after he placed his bet the site doesn't allow other people to play same game ( they suspended the odds) but if this is different site that shows this then it could be bad weather or crisis.

Before the game starts, this happens many times. They will put a "suspended" notice on a match so that no gambler can place a bet. Since we don't have any representative from any gambling site to answer this, I assume it's because the odds are changing way too fast.
The reasons could be players announcing they won't play in the last minute or hour. Another reason is probably weather problems. When games have a suspended status, they will somehow minimize the number of gamblers who will bet on it. Which means less work for them when they void the game and give back the money.

When the unexpected events of the match are normal, the market is temporarily closed to set new odds, which are then again and gamblers can place betting again.
