Was this power given out to a select few members in order to combat spam on your own initiative @theymos or were you approached by someone with a plan and an ask to get this power?
This thread will be a work in progress and updated accordingly.

I'm really surprised that you'd ask something like this considering that most members who regularly visit the Meta board know that the initiative came from a forum member who received permission from the admin to issue a signature ban.

For sure this going to be fun. I'm just getting my popcorn ready.
You seem to deliberately want to turn this important thread into a shitshow. The sigban is a sensitive topic that affected a lot of people, so it is just right that people ask questions to understand how we arrive there. Unfortunately, your comment, being the first seems to suggest that Hhampuz ask the question for a fight meanwhile it might just be for Theymos to clear the mind of people. I'm not against the idea but I believe that people also need better understanding of how we got here, what criteria is being used and any other important information that may help those affected to improve their contribution.

I visit Meta fairly often but I don't think I've seen anything pointing to this here. So essentially it was not theymos' original idea but that of a member(s) who made theymos see reasons with it. Did I understand that correctly?

this Signature Ban Appeal Q&A: read before appealing your sigban. That thread was closed on request too. Thanks to nutildah for helping out! Since they are easy to appeal and don't harm the user's ability to speak, sigbans are a good way of addressing users who don't have any single post which breaks the rules, but whose posts seem to contribute more noise than signal. Note that I just now made a couple of adjustments: - Sigbans now also hide avatars, personal text, and website icons next to posts. - Sigbans are now listed in the modlog.

Did I understand that correctly? There's not much that's incomprehensible here. If you've been following Meta, this thread is enough for you, and nutildah explained everything. Whose idea it is or whose initiative it is is a pretty irrelevant matter in all of this. It's even less important which member/moderator has enough power to give a signature ban. Q: Why is this happening?A:Since they are easy to appeal and don't harm the user's ability to speak, sigbans are a good way of addressing users who don't have any single post which breaks the rules, but whose posts seem to contribute more noise than signal.

However I’m sure his not the only one doing the job, I will be interested to know if nutildah is the only one handling the job.

<snip> Thank you for the link. That helps to explain to a large extent what I wanted to know about that whole process and which AFAIK, wasn't directly stated in the original thread in Meta nor in theymos' reply there.

That's exactly what I was thinking. In the end, theymos bears the ultimate responsibility, regardless of whether it was nutildah's idea or not. I'm a little puzzled by this thread; I'm looking forward to seeing the updates the OP says he'll be making.

Don't play this game with you, you say? While clearly trying to play games with me. Interesting. The thread you linked was a Q&A for Signature Ban Appeals, no? It was under my impression that thread was posted after the power to ban signatures was given out. My posts in that thread were also after someone close to me received such a ban. I don't have either the time nor the interest in playing any games with you so how about you locate that stick that is stuck and pull it out? Appreciate the link though.

The question is accurate and the answers here are not. Too many Offside... @Hhampuz, you can pm @theymos to have the answer in case he noticed the topic but didn't answer here. I will not ask why you opened the topic in the first place because I know the answer. Your path contains a lot of mines, good luck.

The question is accurate and the answers here are not. Too many Offside... After that ss that SuperBitMan shared, I think that answer is pretty obvious. By the way, just a reminder that signature bans were a thing for quite some time and even mentioned in Signature Campaign Guidelines, but for whatever reason they were almost never enforced.

By the way, just a reminder that signature bans were a thing for quite some time and even mentioned in Signature Campaign Guidelines, but for whatever reason they were almost never enforced. It was applied for posters that were permanently banned, with a most common reason is plagiarism. Then if they appealed successfully, received a second chance, signature ban was applied. Globals can now issue sig bans so it'll happen more often but isn't going to be a let off for everyone (so if half your posts are copy and pastes then forget about it but people who are getting banned for one or two posts from years ago will likely be shown some mercy).
Global mods were given the ability to ban signatures only yesterday. Do you think we can get through all the appeals in one day? Be patient.

Read those guidelines that I shared. Signature ban is clearly mentioned as punishment for shitposting. Why it wasn't really enforced is another question.

The ability to add signature bans was added a long time ago as something that all global moderators and admins can do.
I was more recently in discussion with nutildah about how to address the signal-to-noise issue, and he volunteered to help, in general terms. It was my idea to give him sigban permissions in particular.

I also asked a similar question because I was curious as to how the initiative was started but I was not attacked: I am in favour of any initiative that helps clean up the forum but am curious how this was started. Did nutildah approach theymos with the idea?Since when has it become a crime to ask a question? It is not as though you were replying to a newbie account operated by an account farmer. On the contrary, you were replying to a highly respected member of the forum yet you did not even factor that in when you posted (without even answering the question). What on earth is this attitude towards Hhampuz for? Was this power given out to a select few members in order to combat spam on your own initiative @theymos or were you approached by someone with a plan and an ask to get this power? ~snip~ I'm really surprised that you'd ask something like this considering that most members who regularly visit the Meta board know that the initiative came from a forum member who received permission from the admin to issue a signature ban.
