The consequences of replacing humans with robots and AI will affect the very structure of society. And most likely, not for the better. Just look: starting from the Middle Ages, every person could plan their future, knew where and by what profession they would work, and understood what they needed to strive for. Crafts were passed down through inheritance within guilds. The son of a carriage maker became a carriage maker, and then his son. The son of a peasant became a peasant. The younger sons of a baron became knights and went off to fight. The society consisted of people who were confident in their future and had a goal.
Even under capitalism, there were working‑class dynasties of miners, metallurgists, and so on. Or a bartender would leave his bar to his son or daughter, and they would become bartenders. That is why trade unions were able to emerge. Then, starting around the 1970s-1980s, this structure began to gradually collapse. The workforce, the proletariat, started to transform into the precariat. That is, people who do not have a permanent job, who cannot plan their future, who have no goals. Trade unions have lost their influence. Why did this happen?
Because production was moved to third‑world countries (with minuscule wage levels), the mechanization of labor (technological progress) was constantly increasing. Now, this has been supplemented by AI‑driven robotization of production and even other sectors (services, medicine, trade, etc.).
Robotization leads to a reduction in the share of human labor in the cost of the produced goods. According to the labor theory of value, it is labor that determines value, which means this will lead to a constant decline in prices. But this will not result in universal abundance, when goods cost 0, but rather in a shortage. Since production will be halted. For why produce goods for people who have no money and will never have any (and no credit either, since there is no income) to buy the goods?
This is such a great post about this. I think that one of the many reasons why people are in dismissal or denial is because they are so deeply scared, because if we do go into this direction then the very foundation of our society and way of living is going to fall apart. I do not like when they approach topics this way, we need to be brave, face the facts and figure out ways to deal with it. I do not see any limitations of AI in the topic of job replacement, the most current limitations are about engineering challenges of robots but they are advancing rapidly too. If we compare the robots of 5, 10 or even 15 years ago compared to what we have now we can see that the speed of progress is evolving. Those that are in the IT sector and are actively using AI already know how much it can speed up the work, and some functions and jobs even from that sector it can already do on its own and this is still a very young industry.
As a result, by the middle of this century, we will find ourselves in a society where there is a shortage of everything, almost no one works (because there is no work), and people live on state benefits. No one plans their life for longer than a single day. The population will halve due to aging, low birth rates, and simply dying out. Giant megacities will become depopulated. In other words, people will become unnecessary. But robots are meaningless in a world without people. In a world without people, everything is meaningless - even wealth.
I fear that we may go the dystopian way. When it comes to the population numbers, the world would be fine if we had a decrease since this planet is a bit over populated but if the rich class take us in this direction I do not know if or when they would stop. There is the other issue that is not related to income loss or state benefits, many individuals need to have work to have a stable and structure life. Without proper work they will not grow as some people do, they will start behaving in more crazy ways and continue to destroy themselves. For now it looks like we are going into dystopian chaos..
What I'm saying in essence is that, no matter the innovation that comes onboard, humans would always still be in charge and let take you back to the days of town crying down to letter writing , down to post offices, to emails, text messages ,phone calls and now social medias and no matter how it comes, people would always still figure out ways to stay in check and that's one thing that can't be denied which is where I was centering.
Do we need proves for saying that, there would be jobs that ai wouldn't be able to take away from people, maybe not because it wouldn't be able to do it but simply because humans wouldn't find it convenient to let them do such jobs.
This is a very weak point, and it does not prove at all that there would be jobs that AI can't take. Tell me examples of such jobs.
Although there are AI which handles AI, this still needs human. It isn't living things, it sometimes errors or having a trouble. It won't also happen to average AI, but this may also happen to AI which handles AI. So, I still think it is impossible that AI will totally take over all the jobs in this world. However, I won't argue that AI will take many jobs, it starts happening nowadays.
This is not true, and it shows that you are not using this technology already or that you understand its progress. There are already AI agents that are handling other agents. 10 years from now this is going to look like a video game compared to the technology that we will have..
Agree. Robots are created by human, it must have many weaknesses and limitation. We can't imagine robots to be fully independent as in the movie or film.
Medical experts must still ever made a mistake. Even more with medical robots, they probably will have a bigger possibility to make mistakes.
Humans have many more weaknesses and limitations than robots made by humans, so what is this argument supposed to say? Medical AI and soon robots already works better than humans, so please don't make up stuff.
