I was just reading through an old article about Bitcoin investment and it hit me how the existence of Bitcoin has so much created its own timing sequence that isn't bound to the Gregorian calendar.

So we can see block time as a variable that replaces calendar dates in normal daily business and commerce and this for me changed the way I perceive time mostly for the Bitcoin investors and its ecosystem.

Block heights is used to measure how far Bitcoin has come and is performing and can be used to plan for the long term when talking about financial investments that concerns Bitcoin.

So my little question is this: is it okay to say that replacing calendar dates with block numbers could have an effect on how an investor thinks both in the short term or long term, when it comes to investment planning involving Bitcoin?

How is it going to be calculated if bitcoin block number or height is used to replace the gregorian calendar? That is not possible. Blocks are mined in 10 minute average. There are several blocks that are mined in just one day.

What I know is that there is no calendar that can be as common as the Anno Domini calendar. There are other calendars in the world, but the Gregorian calendar is been the most known and the one the world is using.

The world is very wide and there are many time zones, not only calendars. People can use different time zones, different calendars freely and all of these don't affect Bitcoin blockchain.

Bitcoin does not need to replace fiat currencies, and Bitcoin community does not need to replace traditional calendars and available timezones with Bitcoin blockchain's block numbers.

Like this forum, there is a default forum time, but there is an option to customize your own time offset.

What I care about is Bitcoin Equivalent Network Time.

It will only get an investor more confused. Let them be the way they are and using calendar to calculate investment planning is still okay. An investor new to the space doesn’t really knows how block numbers work, so inputting them into calendar to plan their investment will get them very confused and may in the end not really bear any positive effects on your investment. We should just leave something as they are, trying to find a new meaning to it could get it overall complicated for the people.

I really don't know how free someone would be to think of this.
So I would be like
I'm on my way I will be there before Block 986891.

So my little question is this: is it okay to say that replacing calendar dates with block numbers could have an effect on how an investor thinks both in the short term or long term, when it comes to investment planning involving Bitcoin?
No
There are so many things and limitations about the idea I don't even know where to start.
Saying 2030 or 4 years time or 48 months time or block 1176508 wouldnt make the investor change their decisions.

I think things are much more global and interesting here... 🙋

There's the real physical world. Since our planet Earth revolves around the Sun, in real time we use the concept of time based on this physical phenomenon.

However, this century has seen the emergence of a new virtual world. First came computers, then the internet, then smartphones (internet in your pocket), then Bitcoin, then large language models, then AI agents.

In virtual space, time also needs to be measured somehow, and why not use "Bitcoin time" for this purpose? The physical Sun doesn't shine in the virtual world, so it's entirely logical to reinvent the concept of time! Bitcoin is a protocol for transferring value in virtual space. The process of creating new blocks is objective and continuous. Therefore, "Bitcoin time" could very well become the primary time of the virtual world. It's mind-boggling! 🙆

I'd say everything is perfectly fine the way it is. Calendar is here to stay and is going no where. I wonder what positive impact such an idea will bring to the bitcoin ecosystem considering that the current system is perfectly fine the way it is. Just note that block height serves as technical reference whereas the Gregorian calendar is more practical and a simple to understand approach that has been proven to be effective over the years and nothing is gonna change that.

No, there is no way this can be done, there are 365days in a year and more than thousands blocks exists, how can such be twisted into corresponding with the Gregorian calendar, it's impossible and this thought of yours in the OP is wild.

The only calendar that had emerged from Bitcoin itself is the 4 years cycle of new ATH, others may come in future but this for now.

I think that there's some to little effect into it but that's on how majority of the investors think. Because if it's about these block numbers, people wouldn't really care about that and with the dates.

What people are thinking of are only the important dates and block numbers and one of it is about the halving. And when they know that the halving is about to come, that's when they'll start to hurry to buy before the bull run comes.

Other than that, I don't think that there's some huge impact to it for most investors on how they invest and with their decision making.

I think you're a deep thinker, it would've made sense if this were possible cause block timing warrants patients for instance, when sending money to another wallet you’ll need to be patient and wait for confirmations even if you adjust the timimg to be faster you'll still need to wait for confirmations.

Although it would be better to just focus on investing with the Bitcoin cycle instead of block timing that might be too complicated to understand, you can choose to hold for 2 cycles, 3 or more, it still makes sense cause it's long term and you’ll still have to be patient cause i believe your reason for this thought relates with the idea of holding longer right?

Sure.  Block Height can be a measurement of how far a Cryptocurrency got.  While Bitcoin builds Block after Block, others have been stalling for a decade or more.  But replacing the calendar with Bitcoin Block time is insane and I do not see how that would bring any advantage to any body, including investors.  Other than Halvings, I do not get how that would even work.  It is non sense!

Bitcoin doesn't really care about timing like September or October or 2028 or 2030. Blocks are important to the network. But an investor should  need to just follow their own convenient path not to add complexity to the block number. When will your salary come, how much will it cost, how old are you, how many years until retirement, these are all matters of calendar time. If you want to invest in Bitcoin yourself, then you have to invest based on this calendar.

In terms of investment, instead of being technical, you should move towards what is actually easier, more convenient to calculate. For this reason, block height can have some effect on the investor's mindset, but I don't think it should be used as a price planning tool.

And this is more interesting, it is basically considered 4 years to complete the 210000 block cycle. So an investor should keep a minimum target of 4 years to hold or continue investing regularly. In this case, he should calculate the calendar year or calculate it as 210000 block.

To me, block height is a nice concept to understand Bitcoin's own time. But an investor should understand how long they can sustainably accumulate, and plan accordingly.

Bitcoin doesn't really care about timing like September or October or 2028 or 2030. Blocks are important to the network.
A blockchain is only a live one if it has hash rate for mining new blocks, which will include Bitcoin transactions for Bitcoin users, and Bitcoin nodes will relay block information to other decentralized nodes globally.

A blockchain without hash rate, and without new found blocks will be like a dead one.
Example of a latest dead blockchain by almost no found blocks.
Controversial Bitcoin fork BIP-110 mines two blocks, then stops.

Irrelevant to Bitcoin though or even for investors. This just make things complicated. So for me, I won't dwell with this kinds of "technicalities". What's important is that Bitcoin and miners continue to find a block in ~10 minutes and that's it.

Of course there is math behind it. But we shouldn't dwell on it and involved like calendar dates and block numbers. Investors are concern on how much they can buy Bitcoin and whether they are in the long haul or for short term. But both has the same goal which is to make money.

Bitcoin didn't come to replace fiat currency, rather working hand-in-hand with it. There is no reason behind Bitcoin wanting to replace or change the world calendar, knowing well that there are different time zones for different countries across the world.

Looking at September 1752 calendar, because of the change of the calendar type from Julian to Gregorian calendar, it made the month of September incomplete, what do you think this will do this time.

It is better to use Bitcoin the way it is, and not use it to affect any other system. If we want to compare Bitcoin with time, lets do that with the %tage  of Bitcoin we can acquired before the total mining period elapse, because Bitcoin is on a count down.

It doesn't really make sense at all to use block height to replace our normal calendar system. I wish I had only properly expressed myself in my post to state how block height is only better and more applied when talking about something like on-chain escrow, protocol level incentives and financial execution that is programmed, then it would have made more sense. I still have a lot to learn mehn!

The time gap between two block mined varies highly and it is not constant but time has to be measured with something that is constant which is why we created the concept of time right?

And how exactly you see the time changes with block, propose something that is closer or even better than the time we are using at present. Just because you are a bitcoin maximalist that doesn't mean you have to see bitcoin and blockchain in everything.

Time is a made up concept.

What really matters is entropy. Time measures entropy. If you can stop entropy, you literally stop time. No aging, no time. That's exactly the reason why they say gold is "timeless", it is because it doesn't oxidize. It doesn't go bad. It resists entropy.

Would it really matter how many times the earth spun around the sun if it weren't causing any change in our lifespan? (it still doesn't btw, it is just we measure our remaining lifespan that way) It would be just numbers... Spin number 823858...

So my little question is this: is it okay to say that replacing calendar dates with block numbers could have an effect on how an investor thinks both in the short term or long term, when it comes to investment planning involving Bitcoin?

Replacing calendar dates with block numbers will make things hard for those who do not engage with Bitcoin or know little about technical things on Bitcoin.  The Gregorian Calendar has been working fine, so I do not get why there is a need to replace it with block numbers.

We should remember that people engaging with Bitcoin are still in the minority, pushing stuff like your idea will only face criticism and discomfort to those who are not familiar with the terms.

I doubt if it will change anything... Investors are likely to think the same regardless of if they choose to rely on block numbers or not. Although, there's some sense in what you're trying to come up with because I think it can practically work. If time practically acts as a reference that distinguishes the before and after of an event(common physics definition), then block numbers can also do the same, especially with the main halving event that occurs after every 210,000 blocks(approximately 4years).

But like I said, it won't change anything as Investors are likely to think the same way. In fact, most people probably won't understand the concept, so it's best we leave things the way they've been. There's no point of handing the work of time over to Bitcoin just to prove a point.
