And the best answer materialized earlier today because the market has went into correction. That's why there are traders who keep on shorting because they have the logic of understanding the market that when it goes up, then the opposite shall come shortly. But not at all times they're correct and that's why OP has asked the question. In any trade where a trader thinks that they'd be profitable, they'd do it. And this is why we see different predictions, analysis but in the end, we'd see on who's the better one and if the shorts liquidates the longs and vice versa.

I read that $90 million worth of bitcoin shorts have been liquidated in the past hour as bitcoin moves pass $80,000.

My question is; Why do they keep shorting even when the market is pointing towards bullish, why not long instead?

I don't trade futures, I don't know if I am missing something... There's clear indication that the market is targeting $85,000, so, why not long from 80k to 83k instead of shorting?
Many traders think that when the market starts to rise, they think that it may have risen for a short time. Otherwise, they think that it is a fake breakout, the price will come down after a while, such a plan puts them in confusion, so they take a shot when the market is good. Moreover, most of the time we can see that when the market enters the high and then starts to fall again, many traders think it is better to take a short. Again, many times it is seen that when the market enters between $80k and $83k, many people think that it has risen to the highest in a short time, in which case they take a short and if the market goes down, they will profit. However, when it starts to go higher from this price, they face this loss, in which case short trading often makes good profits, but eventually loses. The market sometimes goes against the traders' ideas, as a result of which even if you enter according to the right position, you have to face losses. Moreover, in the recent Bitcoin market, we have seen many big short-liquidations in the Bitcoin rally, due to which most traders take short in the hope of big profits.

The market has been in a bearish/stable period for the past 10 months, leaving a large number of traders with capital locked up in the market. After starting to be bullish, these traders are rushing to get their capital back. The Bitcoin market which was moving aggressively, is now stabilizing. But it is almost certain that the price of Bitcoin will advance further this month.

Institutional investors simply apply their own strategies and influence ordinary investors in various ways. Traders who trade futures cannot say for sure when the market will rise or fall further. Traders are taking advantage of this lucrative opportunity to profit from the increase in the price of Bitcoin after a long time, while long term investors are still regularly accumulating Bitcoin and building decent portfolios.

I will not blame those that short the market thinking that it's going to drop because that's what their wrong analysis tells them, but the problem is their approach and the use of high leverage, because if they had uses low or no leverage their is no way they will get liquidated that easy, since Bitcoin did not even move up to 5%.

When you trade with high leverage, your liquidation price becomes closer, but when you trade without it, it stays very far, so unless traders learn from this an avoid trading with high leverage, this will keep on happening in the market.

And the best answer materialized earlier today because the market has went into correction. You understood my stance and I think what's happening in the market since yesterday has also helped to better answer my question.

It's safe to say that as a trader, you can't be too certain with your predictions. From the recent indications, many of us thought the market was moving towards $83k, if I was a future trader,  I would've definitely gone for the long yesterday and would've definitely suffer loss.

The market is volatile and unpredictable and no matter how good one tends to be in theirs analysis, theirs no guarantee to predict correctly.

Even professional investors, traders and analysts cant be certain that their predictions will be right. The market is impossible to predict.  Knowledge and experience can improve your chances of being right, but they don't guarantee the outcome.

You should be glad you didnt enter futures trade and lose money.  Tongue
But real traders won't just jump into a position because of a few superficial signals like a regular investor might. They analyze the chart carefully and assess liquidity, trend, and many other factors before making a decision.

The point is that Bitcoin is unpredictable, and in the crypto market, we can all go in the same direction with our predictions. Everyone may have their reasons for doing so, especially if they have done their research properly. The results they get from their research may suggest that the price could drop before increasing again, as it may need to undergo a correction. This has been happening, especially when it is not bull-run season. When the price increases significantly, it always has a tendency to drop before moving up again.

Almost all those traders you see going against the price of Bitcoin, whether the price is increasing or decreasing, are mostly experienced traders, and that is how they play their game. A trader can go long and the price may continue dropping, and sometimes they can short when the price drops, only for the price to pick up again. The fact is, not every trader has to be in profit all the time.

The market volatility has made things more clearer to us that our predictions are not always certain even if we might be 100% sure about it because the market price moves from one point to another. As a trader that is why it always advisable that no matter how we might be sure of our strategies or predictions we shouldn’t neglect our risk management because we don’t actually know what the market next movement would be.

And you are right, had it been you went for long yesterday then you would have been in losses right now and if you neglect adding risk management to your long then the losses would have been massive too but luckily you didn't and you know you don’t just walk into the market with others opinion as a smart trader.

Basically you dont need to trade futures to understand because in the market there is always an imaginary lines right there these lines gives to you an idea about the current trend lines doing in the market which has a support and resistance, even there is a trendlines going up or down also it givings a pattern base on the candles. Now if you seen previous the price of the bitcoin attempted to surpass its previous price from the 85k but apparently it becomes a strong resistance before the market price.

You can see this image as reference, from the month of May 2026, the price of the bitcoin stays at the 80k price range before going down from the previous low price 58k, so now after couple of months there is a trend line breaks which is the bitcoin now seen a bullish confirmation but before it happens this needs to break the supply area where tons of trades get trapped.

I don't trade futures, I don't know if I am missing something... There's clear indication that the market is targeting $85,000, so, why not long from 80k to 83k instead of shorting?

I also avoid futures trading and have zero experience with futures trading. But I understand a little why traders do this; rather than opening a long position, they choose a short position. The thing is that you never time the crypto market move anytime so accurately, and timing any move of the crypto market 100% accurately is impossible thing.

And the answer to your question is that the market never moves always in one direction, and when it makes any pump or dump, then it takes a correction accordingly. Like, if the market has gained value, after that gain it will dump a little, or if it is dumping, it will pump after some time. This is a very basic thing that is followed by the market, and it would not be wrong to call it market behaviour. DYOR!

Yes, no guarantee at all for how it will go in the next upcoming days. And those who don't know that the market can go short anytime, they haven't seen the more bad days in the market and only saw the upside of it. But they don't have to see it if they are holding for so long and decided to make themselves convenient by having it. No need to pull so much predictions and analysis if there's no need for them to move.

First in the crypto or financial trading market, traders know it's not possible for the market to be bullish without doing some downtrend in price based on the market price action.
Second, there are some price zones the market will always respect by going the opposite trend. If you look at the chart of daily time frame of Bitcoin, you'll that it's somehow replicate the model of trend created in the previous halving market so traders use it as zones. However, to play safe it's good to always wait for confirmation which is what the traders you're talking about didn't do.
I believe those that short BTC despite the bullish trend (you believe the market is currently in which is not yet confirm until it break 2 above order block at 82K, and 97K) expect the market to respect previous zones

So at the end of the day, you're saying that these liquidations are more about their poor risk management than simply the direction they chose to trade.

Well, I have to agree with you, the market moves both ways so it's possible that it can easily go against ones prediction but a proper risk management strategy will help reduce the risk of getting liquidated.
Even with risk management, you can lose money. Imagine opening a trade and closing it at your first or second support level, like you set two or more stop loss targets for your trade to save, not 100% because that's not possible all the time, but you can save 70% to 90% of your capital by closing early, and still that 10% to 30% you lose, combined with the rest of the traders in the market, can make millions.

So these 90 million can be that, but not everyone is using risk management, so that's why the number is high. Many are gambling without using stop loss. They don't care about the result because they know we are gambling our money, and if our luck works, we can make good profit.

So there are not just two types of people. There are many types of people with many different mindsets.

The essence of risk management is not that you wouldn't lose money. Anybody that thinks that way have it wrong. Risk management is there so that one trade won't undo all the progress one has made in their trading career or for a specific account. A wise man once said that one of the best ways to make it as a trader is to ensure that when you lose, you lose small and when you win, you win big because at the end of the day, no matter how skilled you are at trading, you can't have a 100% trading record.

I will not blame those that short the market thinking that it's going to drop because that's what their wrong analysis tells them, but the problem is their approach and the use of high leverage, because if they had uses low or no leverage their is no way they will get liquidated that easy, since Bitcoin did not even move up to 5%.

The thing is that the market only has two options, you either get it right or wrong so now that they got it wrong we question their decision but if they were to get it right then we praise and envy their accuracy. They short the market because they thought more correction was about to happen and you can't blame them because that is what most people are thinking, the sudden spike has alot to do with the news coming from the US government than the market itself so it isn't a call that could've have been detected that easily. Trading is all about speculations so the short or long calls can either be right or wrong so whatever outcome the market gives you should be appreciated as gains or lessons.
