[I've been thinking about stablecoins lately, but not from the usual trading perspective. Most people seem to talk about USDT or USDC as something you use to move money between exchanges, but I think there is a bigger economic question here. If someone lives in a country where the local currency loses value quickly, holding dollars through a bank isn't always simple. There can be restrictions, expensive conversion fees, limits on foreign currency accounts, or simply not enough access to banking services. A stablecoin can sometimes give that person access to something much closer to a digital dollar without needing the same traditional infrastructure. That makes me wonder whether stablecoins are slowly becoming a form of savings for some people rather than just a tool for crypto traders. From an economic point of view, this could become pretty important. If people start holding more of their savings in dollar-backed stablecoins instead of their local currency, demand for the local currency can decrease. In countries with already weak currencies, that could potentially make the problem even worse. At the same time, I can understand why someone would do it. If your salary is paid in a currency that loses 20% or 30% of its purchasing power over a relatively short period, keeping at least part of your savings in a dollar-denominated asset seems rational. There is also an interesting difference between Bitcoin and stablecoins here. Bitcoin is volatile, so it isn't necessarily useful when your main goal is simply protecting the value of your savings over the next few months. A stablecoin doesn't have that price volatility against the US dollar, so for someone dealing with local inflation it can be a much simpler choice. This makes me wonder if the biggest economic impact of crypto in some countries might actually come from stablecoins rather than Bitcoin. Maybe the important adoption metric isn't how many people are buying BTC. Maybe it's how many people are quietly using digital dollars because their own currency isn't doing its job.

I'm curious what others think about this. Do stablecoins represent genuine competition for traditional banking and local currencies, or are they still mostly a temporary tool for the crypto market? And if stablecoin adoption keeps growing in countries with high inflation, could governments eventually see it as a much bigger economic issue than Bitcoin itself?

This stable coins are centralized and not like Bitcoin that the government is fighting hard against in order to be within their control. Stable coin is just another fiat in crypto form because of their centralization even though they’re a currency that is stable and can help in terms of inflation. Most stable coins are pegged to dollar and when inflation hits, it also affects the dollar value of a country when compared to the currency of such country. This may not be a viable way to escape inflation. Government are also pushing to adopt digital currencies, so this won’t really be a thing to bother them and be seen as a competition against their currencies.

I kind of agree with the op’s point that stable coin are now also regarded as as a form of currency that is held against inflation for countries that their local currency loses its value quickly, I think since stable coins are actually pegged to dollar, inflation might hit them but not as how it will affect those savings in their local currency. My reason is that dollar is just the strongest currency out there now, any coin that is pegged to it also possess its strong value.
I agree that using stable coins as an escape routes to inflation might not be  viable, but it’s still better than holding some local currency, using Naira as case study, it’s better off holding usdt for example.

It's a good point and there are some countries that conduct transactions primarily in USD even if it's not their official currency, because it offers greater stability. However there is a step in there between having dollars in your hand and trying to get them into a cryptocurrency, it's likely to incur a charge even from some kind of exchanger and that's who the banks will be competing with on fees. You also describe how it can have a depressing effect on the local currency as well, which can often be caused by the direction of the government and they're going to be more likely to enact laws which heavily punish people who try to circumvent currency controls. That adds a level of risk into the conversion, most people might prefer the approach of holding USDT but the practicalities of acquiring, holding and storing it securely (especially for anyone who is tech illiterate) can be difficult.

Quick question:

Why would someone hold a stablecoin that doesn't grow in value for years, yet there is Bitcoin that is capable of going at least 2x after some months?

Just so you know, even the US dollar is prone to inflation. Which is why people try to look for assets that store value.

In between Yes and No. Stablecoins are savings for short term, not a good way for long-term savings. Despite being stablecoin, it doesn't mean exchange conversion rate to fiat will be stable as well, last week exchange rate between NGN/USD was ~ N1,393, today exchange rate is ~1,373, slight change in the process, but how about for the long term, few years ago exchange rate was close to clocking N2000/1USD, this is how far rate has dropped, this is not like Bitcoin whereby we are certain of a breakthrough, anybody saving in stablecoins should be careful and know exactly what they are into.

Stablecoins as the name is, obviously does more to keep the value of currency stable while it affects the economy of the country whose citizens has chosen to use it more that their local fiat currency because the government has the loss to bear and that makes the fiat almost worthless and scarce because people prefer to use stablecoins instead due to its stability.

Crypto currency differ from stable coins because of volatility and that's why most citizens in not wanting to be a party to volatility scare, chose to save in stablecoins as a hedge against inflation mostly if their economy is experiencing high inflation.
The adoption of stablecoins definitely takes the power off the CBN and banks because their policies become impractical and deposits become less, so it's more of a concern than cryptocurrency trading could ever be to any government experiencing inflation problems in their region.

I like to hold EURC and USDT, which, compared to my country's currency, are worth more, are more "stable", and suffer less volatility than cryptocurrencies in general. I also keep them as a reserve to be able to make other investments.

Like gold, I believe they can also serve as a form of protection for investors.

Indeed most people hold stable coins but I'm not sure if it's for the purpose of escaping inflation of their country. Well if it is then, such person needs a doctor because, they are literally using fire to fight fire. It might seem like a working strategy but in the long run that value will also drop because inflation is everywhere except that their own country currency is increasingly depreciating in value such that they dont notice that the other country's stable is also experiencing inflation. Stable coins are only good for short term storage probably before you make a decision, it's not a secure way of fighting inflation.

Good thread. The OP frames stablecoins as this empowering tool for people in inflation-wrecked economies. And sure that is partially true. But there is a large counterparty problem lurking beneath that narrative. If your savings are in USDT then you are betting on Tether. In August of 2026, they were audited by KPMG for the first time. It came back clean with about $6.8 billion excess reserves. However, the final audit report was not made public. Which is strange for a company holding the financial lifeline of millions of people across the global south.

And for those small businesses and ordinary people who cannot or will not use stablecoins, credit is becoming more difficult. But the very instrument that sustains individual credit power may be able to suffocate the credit market at the economy level. Nigeria's SEC just proposed 120% reserve requirements for foreign currency backed stablecoins specifically. They are watching capital drain in real time.

source: sec.gov.ng

Stablecoins definitely have the edge for short-term value protection. When it comes time to pay rent next month, you do not want the volatility. But people are underestimating long term risk of stablecoins. You are riding the performance of the U.S. Dollar. The dollar is strong today. But "now" is not forever. Unlike Bitcoin, there is no limit on the dollars created, the Fed prints them when they want. So maybe stablecoins solve today's problem while quietly building tomorrow's.

There aren't that many countries with significantly high inflation actually. Or at least where people also tend to have significant savings. Argentina and Turkey come to mind, but their central banks sort of offset it with high interest rates.

Communities from those states also profoundly present in the crypto industry so I guess you could say the adoption of stablecoins and DeFi as an alternative way to fight high inflation has already happened.

I'm curious what others think about this. Do stablecoins represent genuine competition for traditional banking and local currencies, or are they still mostly a temporary tool for the crypto market?

Is the stablecoin competing with the traditional currency in the first place and how you suggest the comparison to be classified? Because for all I know is that neither the physical cash or the digital currency has the Valuablity or potentials to hedge inflation because their values are stabled and not volatile as bitcoin.
But I understand the drastic of holding your fund's in higher currencies in which national economy is booming strongly far better than your country's economy flows because during an inflation in your local economy, a higher economy in the currency strength index will give a edge to hold value for you than when you holds it in your local currency.
So stablecoin is only better than that the traditional currency because it's digitalize and can easily and affordably affordable.

Before choosing stablecoins as a means of long term savings, I think it is worth knowing about one major risk. Stablecoins are not independent like Bitcoin, they are completely controlled by a centralized company. If the government of a country sees that people are threatening the economy by using excess USDT instead of local currency, then they can put pressure on companies like Tether and freeze those wallets. So I think that digital dollars may be a good solution to avoid temporary inflation, but true financial freedom to avoid government control or censorship is only available in Bitcoin.

I have always thought this was the way to go especially when one's portfolio is shielded from volatility and value remains @ 1:1 , but after reading about how tether froze ~$42 million dollars of some Thai businessmen some 3-4days ago, I think this saving thing should be put on hold especially when it involves a centralized controlled stablecoin . At this point treat some of these stablecoins as if they were stored on a custodial exchange and you don't have the Pvt key, because risk is always there !!

Always keep in mind that stablecoin is a debt note and there is counterparty risk, the counterparty risk is the problem. If you're treating a real dollar for savings, fine. However, treating a debt note to a private company is the biggest mistake you could ever do, these stablecoin issuers company barely existed for more than 2 decades, there's not enough track record for you to put all of your life saving into their stablecoin and you shouldn't.

There is no insurance and if the issuer failed to manage their reserves, the depegging can happen and as a result your lifesaving is gone. Treating stablecoin as a new form of saving is misconception. You don't entrust your lifesaving to non insured deposit like stablecoin if you actually don't want to lose your money.

At first glance, from a superficial look, stablecoins may seem to pose a real challenge to traditional banking services and local currencies, but in reality, this is just a big trick and trap because stablecoins are much worse than central banks and traditional paper currencies.

While stablecoins may appear to be relatively inexpensive because they are pegged to the dollar and offer some advantages such as faster transfers and lower fees, they are far from secure. They are highly centralized and completely violate privacy, to the point that your assets can be frozen even while in your wallet. This is in addition to the problems associated with auditing, the lack of actual cash reserves, and the fact that companies can issue large quantities of stablecoins without restrictions.

Quick question:

Why would someone hold a stablecoin that doesn't grow in value for years, yet there is Bitcoin that is capable of going at least 2x after some months?

Just so you know, even the US dollar is prone to inflation. Which is why people try to look for assets that store value.

If I analyze your question using my country's economic reality as a backdrop, it would appear OP has a valid point.

USD is subject to inflation. My country's fiat is also subject to the same. The difference, however, is that the US has done a much better job in managing the USD's value. Mine is doing extremely poorly. As a result, the USD's value is increasing fast against my currency.

Financial advisors here would encourage many to keep some of their savings in USD. The problem is that it isn't easy for ordinary people to open dollar accounts. Second, the buying price from almost everywhere is significantly lower than the actual price.

Here comes USDT. There are also risks, of course, but if the goal is easy access to USD and with a fair price, it's indeed a nice option. The ultimate goal isn't even to profit from it; it's simply to prevent the purchasing power of your money from eroding fast.

I am not completely denying the importance of stablecoins. But I would not put USDT ahead of Bitcoin in terms of long time savers. USDT is basically a digital representation of the dollar. So if the value of the dollar continues to decrease, it continues to weaken and its acceptance around the world decreases, then the same effect will be on USDT. So it will be difficult to maintain its value.

In countries where the value of the currency is changing very quickly, inflation is increasing very quickly, USDT can be used as savings. But when thinking about long time financial security, I do not see any asset that is equal or better than Bitcoin.

So if you reduce your dependence on your own country's currency and rely on the digital currency of another country, the direction that the economy of that country will go in the future will also have that effect on your wealth. So if you want to reduce your dependence on others and become the sole owner of the wealth you have, where there will be no interference from anyone else, no regulator, then there is no alternative to Bitcoin.

If someone wants to protect their wealth from inflation, then hold Bitcoin. And if the volatility of Bitcoin price creates panic in you, then investing in gold may be the best option for you.

I have seen a lot of OP your are correct but none of us wants to drop a merit, lol. Well I join in, I see alot of reasoning from the OP's post, it seems kind of smart but the one trade off from saving with stablecoins is you end of inheriting the inflation of another countries example dollars. Since you talked about savings, it depends on your concept of it but for sustainable long term growth investments bitcoin is the right choice because it adds value overtime.

My currency is pretty low compared to the dollar, but I don't save in stablecoins. What is the point in saving in stablecoins when I won't get any profit? The only money I keep in stablecoins is money I plan to use in the short term. Sometimes I keep money I plan to use within 3-6 months in USTD, because if I keep it in Bitcoin, the value might decline and it's easier to spend if the money is in my bank account.

Do stablecoins represent genuine competition for traditional banking and local currencies, or are they still mostly a temporary tool for the crypto market?

Less than 7% of the world uses digital currencies, and even less than use stablecoins, so I don't see that as a competition, at least not yet.

And if stablecoin adoption keeps growing in countries with high inflation, could governments eventually see it as a much bigger economic issue than Bitcoin itself?

They would see it as a problem, but I don't think it would be bigger than Bitcoin. People have more money in Bitcoin than in stablecoins, so if stablecoins becomes such a problem for the governmnet , Bitcoin will be a bigger problem.
