I came across this case from Cyprus today and thought it was worth sharing. A 61 year old man from Paphos reportedly lost more than €77,600 after getting scammed twice. First he saw a crypto investment ad on social media and was contacted by someone offering to help him invest. He sent around €6,200 in crypto and was given a website where he could supposedly see his investment growing. When he tried to withdraw the money, they asked him for another €3,222. He realized it was a scam and stopped communicating with them. Unfortunately, later he was contacted by two other people who claimed they could recover the money he had lost. They told him they could also release the profits from his investment. Between March and July he made several payments to foreign bank accounts for different fees, expenses and taxes. In the end he didn't get anything back and realized he had been scammed again.
This is a good example of why people need to be very careful with crypto recovery services. Once someone knows you've already lost money, you can become an easy target for another scam. If someone contacts you promising to recover your crypto and asks for an upfront fee, tax or withdrawal payment, I would be very suspicious. The case was reported in Cyprus on September 5, 2026.
