Is Electrum Safe To Use Now?

I have a nano ledger s plus.


I used to use Electrum as a wallet on my windows laptop.  Then moved it to a hardware wallet.  When I got a new laptop, I did not install Electrum on it.


I like to install electrum because I want to receive some bitcoin.  The reason is because I want to receive Bitcoin to a device/address that is separate from my Bitcoin in my nano ledger s plus.


Should I install electrum for this?  I recall you have to verify the signature but I read lot of comments that say you have to make sure your electrum is updated?


I know I could use the nano ledger s plus to receive Bitcoin.  The thing is I would be receiving Bitcoin a few times and then sending it later on.  So I don't want to have it mixed with my current bitcoin that I'm holding if that makes sense.  I'm aware that if I receive Bitcoin, it will be a new btc address.  So say I receive bitcoin 3 times from different sites.  Now I want to send it to another site.  I want to make sure it's the same Bitcoin from those addresses that I received.  I heard that you can choose your Bitcoin address that you want to send Bitcoin from with electrum... you can do this with ledger s plus right but it's tougher?


Anyone have advice here?  I want to receive btc from at least 3 sites.  So each time I request btc, I know I will enter in a new btc address.  But after receiving it each time and now want to send to another address, how I make sure all that btc from that same address gets sent to another site?  Example, say I want to receive $1000 worth of btc to an address.  Now once I receive I want to send all of that to another site.  I heard coin control is name for ledger s plus but how do I do it where it won't somehow deduct like say 0.00001 btc from another address in my wallet?

You can click on addresses, right click on the address or addresses you don't want to spend from and freeze it, when you do so, you'll only be able to spend from the addresses you didn't freeze, that would help you not spend from an unintended address.

Electrum is still very safe, it is not part of the recently exploited wallets, be sure to download it from the official website https://electrum.org/

The answer is what was your experience when you used the electrum wallet before buying a hardware wallet? I think that experience should be your guide.

If you are asking about if electrum had actually faced any problem of recent? I say no, it’s still same electrum. Best SPV wallet to me. All features are there with updated ones still, you can explore them yourself.

 
Off post but I will say you need to reconsider your choice of hardware wallet because ledger wallet isn’t a good choice of hardware wallet to me and it’s simply because of their recovery policy

I don't think there's been a time ELECTRUM has ever been an unsafe wallet. The only thing is at some point just like any other software there could be flaws that may be exploitable but most times you don't have to worry since an open source community like Electrum notices ande is able to fix the flaws quickly.

Also you don't need to always update you could be using a 5 year old version with no issues so long it's from the original Electrum site. That aside people usually update because of bug fixes and extra new features. As for coin control ELECTRUM also does it just like most other wallets too. The reason you get a new address every time is because of the HD wallet privacy feature.

Yea, using coin control helps you spend from a particular address which will fit what you want to do and you wouldn't touch any UTXO you don't want to spend from.

From tools>coin control to turn it on.

Electrum is safe but I fear for your ledger wallet because it's not a good hardware wallet since, it has been reported that they store customers seed phase with a third party.

What exactly do you want because from your post I can only point out three(3) possible questions which I'm  still not sure the  one you want us to answer.

Which of this three relate to what you're  trying to ask ?

1. Can I receive multiple btc from 3 different source on a single address then send everything out to another source
2. Can I receive multiple btc from 3 different source on a single address then spend a particular  input to a new source .
3. Can I receive multiple btc from 3 different source on a 3different addresses with each only linking to  new source I spend it to .

I think I draft it out in an understandable way  now.

Btw, I will also advice you on your choice of your hardware wallet. We don't recommend it here because of their bad reputation, unless you''re aware of those and still prefer it.

Exactly there has no been any Period electrum has been actually considered unsafe for use. Even for bad bugs I think the only I have seen or read about for electrum is the Pop up message which was a false message send/displayed when you connect to a rogue electrum server. The messed pop up after broadcasting a transaction asking for electrum app update but the link to the wallet was Fake and still got some people as it stole their seed phrase.

This particular bug teaches something which is to always verify the electrum wallet PGP keys to confirm if it’s the original wallet or not, but aside this I don’t think there have been any bug like this that lure victims into downloading Fake electrum wallet. So if OP is downloading an electrum wallet, it should also be verified too.

It seems you love your ledger. Even if it is closed-source, you still trust this wallet. Almost all of your posts are related to this device since before.


About your current case using Electrum it is safe, and just use coin control or just freeze the address that you don't want to include when you are making a transaction. 

If you can't find that coin control feature, enable the coins tab at view>coins. Check the image as a reference.



And then did you see the tools on the right side? Just click it and then coin control.
