If someone wanted to buy bitcoin in the u.s. the summer of 2010 like july or august of that year, would paypal be the least riskiest and most practical way to buy any desired amount of bitcoin?  Would this early on exchanges and/or middlemen like paypal, ect... put restrictions on how much bitcoin someone could buy?

Right now you are putting energy into something that you can't benefit from, because we are talking about 2010 here, it's in the past already and there is nothing to benefit from it anymore..

You will only feel like if you have bought some Bitcoin at the time maybe today will be different for you but what will that change? You will be filled with regrets, right now is still a good time to buy Bitcoin even though it was cheaper some years back.

Leave the past be and focus on the present.

In 2010, PayPal was not functioning in my country. It started functioning after Web3 took over the internet by storm. That is, around 2016, I started seeing people in the country use PayPal. Nevertheless, PayPal was too risky at that time.

Those who owned one didn't sign up with their personal information. They used foreign accounts. Buying bitcoin using PayPal in 2010 would be riskier.

Why thinking about it now we can't go back to the past. If you had fund in that time you could obviously buy Bitcoin or buy a pc to mine Bitcoin yourself. you could create an account in this forum and give offer to buy Bitcoin if anyone gets interested you may be able to buy some Bitcoin. Don't know if the data is correct but I saw some website saying Bitcoin price was lower than 10 cent at that time.

But between mining and buying, how could one acquire as much btc as humanly from july 2010 onward?

At that time no one knew who would gain much from buying or mining BTC, but in 2010 the block reward at that time was 50 BTC. Since the difficulty is pretty low, you could easily mine this with your PC, even a Core 2 Duo or old i7 core CPU, and mining them with a GPU is much faster.

So mining, I think, is the one that acquired more BTC from that year because BTC is being sold cheap for testing purposes. Look at the guy who received a 10k BTC exchange in pizza?
Those coins came from mining and were sold for pizza.

At first I didn’t want to give a reply to this thread but in my head it keeps telling me to drop some highlights of 2010 Bitcoin history, in those days people got Bitcoin from different sources back then a friend of mine got Bitcoin from google after playing a game…Bitcoin was so easy to mine you could mine thousands of BTC on a normal laptop/PC in your room. Then you need nothing like a farm mine to get bitcoins..but the annoying part is that thinking about such history now would not change anything about it, in the world Bitcoin was the greatest investment people never believed it could become massive, and now most PCs that mined it were formatted, hard drives lost, passwords forgotten or stolen….

Food for thought Something people are laughing at now, that might be big in 10 years just understand that there is no guarantees, but that’s where the opportunity mindset comes in….

But if not july or august of that year, when would have been the earliest someone could buy any amount of bitcoin in one single transaction without exchanges putting limits on how much they could buy in one single transaction then?  When could someone buy like 1000 usd worth of bitcoin or more at once in one single transaction without so much b!@#$%^&Huh  Could this be done with liberty reserve or pecunix?
Got any room on your time machine for me? haha You are so focused on months like you are going back in time and asking people now on how and where we can buy btc?

Can you tell the reason of why you are asking this question at all? It is not like that you can go back in time or something.

You mean DeFi, not Web3 I assume?

Because Web3 is not anywhere close to where it should be and there was no time I would consider " taking over the internet by storm ". DeFi did become a big thing in the Web3 space, sure, but that is just a part of it.

I do not use nor recommend Paypal. Horrible service.

Ok this is why im asking.  Ive been to a lot of what if i bough bitcoin calculator websites and many maybe most post 1000, 5000, and dven 10000 usd worth of bitcoin assuming someone this early on in july 2010 bought this much btc.  Are these value amounts then hypothetical or a real amount that could somehow have been bought this early on?  Did liberty reserve, pacunix, ect... accept a 1000 usd or more purchase with a visa credit/debit card this early on?  I only ask too because google artificial intelligence has told me its just not possible to have bought this amount because of liquidity... im seeing many inconsistencies here with either buying or mining a ton of btc this early for july 2010...!  Google ai went on to say that realistically the only way to have bought a lot is if someone is buying bits at a time like maybe 20 usd per day in two months period that woulx be 1200 usd worth of btc butit just couldnt have befn bought all at once!

I am as confused as to why the post is referenced to the past when the future now holds better options to accomplish the task of buying Bitcoin with cheaper fees and better security as compared to PayPal with heavy fees on large transactions and unsafe to use in sending Bitcoin to a hardware or airgapped wallet.

It's quite difficult to even use PayPal in my country without needing the help of VPN and that's if it works, but even back then I think Mt.Gox would have done a better job than PayPal supposing they remained in service till date still.

Bitcoin was just getting started then and there was no proper mainstream exchange like what we have today, in July or August 2010 PayPal would have not been the most practical option for buying bitcoin.

Back then, people were mostly using bitcoin market forum to buy bitcoin or directly from other users, the major issue was probably trust rather than exact bitcoin purchase restrictions. You had to look for someone willing to sell, agree on the method of payment and hope the other sent it, PayPal also had chargeback risk so the would have had a good reason to be careful about accepting it.

If someone in the us wanted to buy huge amount at that time the difficult thing was not having enough money, it was finding a trustworthy seller with enough bitcoin and safe completion of the trade. Just imagine buying 10,000 dollars worth of bitcoin then compared with doing thesame thing today.

PayPal can be used then, though the time is more than a decade ago, information about what could actually happen is now slim. Nonetheless, there are some PayPal transactions via Mt. Gox exchange, so it's practical. However, the amount you can transact is not certain, and of course, judging by PayPal's annoying ways, there will be a lot of restrictions, and I doubt if they didn't consider such a transaction suspecting. Besides, where is the privacy?

even if paypal was available in some early bitcoin setup at the 2010 like the Mt. Gox, i wont call it less risky option. this is because of the payment made with paypal is reversable through the chargeback, and bitcoin transaction was not reversable, that will be a very risky deal for anyone that was selling BTC for paypal payment. in fact paypal it self was not even an exchange at that time, it was mainly being used as a payment method by some of the early traders and exchanges.

Around 2010 there was no regulatory system for Bitcoin through which someone could be limited in how many Bitcoins they could buy or sell. But the PayPal paradox was a problem at that time. Even if you offered to buy Bitcoin from them many times they might not make trade with you because of the lack of trust since you could easily take back all the funds through a chargeback claim from Paypal but with Bitcoin a transaction cannot be reversed in any way.  But if there was a huge amount of transaction PayPal would block the users accounts. For this reason users would often set a limit between the Bitcoin buyer and seller so that they would not buy or sell more than a specific amount at once.

I don't know why you're are asking about it are you dreaming about going back to past and become worlds most wealthy person?

Yes, if it was about buying Bitcoin in the early 2010, then Paypal was the best and the least riskiest payment method to buy your Bitcoin both online and offline, simply because if you had happened to have met someone online who was trying to play smart, you paid and the user refused to send you your bitcoin, you can easily report the transaction for "chargeback" and you will have your money back. Because in the early 2010, most people got scammed simply because Bitcoin was still new. But however, if i was to sell my bitcoin, i wouldn't have use PayPal, but alternative payment methods.

Who says you had to buy $1,000 worth of Bitcoin all at once, rather than in several installments?

But regardless, that still does not explain why you keep asking the same questions year after year.  As AakZaki already pointed out, you had an almost identical thread last year - what was wrong with that one?

This thread was actually once created by the OP here, this time he created it again.
Pay attention to the Neutral tag created by lovesmayfamilis, it's because he ignored the answers that other members have given in previous threads similar to this.

Was PayPal ever a good option in the early days of exchanges in order to buy bitcoin? If someone wanted to buy a ton of bitcoin in early 2010, would PayPal have been the way to go to buy more than 1000 usd worth of bitcoin? Why did PayPal get a bad reputation then?

There is a possibility that the same thing will happen here, when the answer has been given he will ignore it again. and make a similar thread again. lol

I think the Moderator needs to take Action on a similar thread created by the same person.

I was wondering if what relevance is PayPal to this subject and reading on, I saw that you the OP haven’t done some research using Google AI found that, the only restriction their is would be that of liquidity, since if there are more available Bitcoin that you can access for purchases, then you will.

All that before I saw this response and I quote;

This thread was actually once created by the OP here, this time he created it again.

It isn’t ideal to make duplicate threads and people actually out in their time and intellect to be effective in these discussions, you need to pay attention to your threads and not just revamp them after a year since, I find that your previous thread was in April of 2025, that’s a year and some months away.

Not Your Keys, Not Your Bitcoin

In 2010, PayPal was not functioning in my country. It started functioning after Web3 took over the internet by storm. That is, around 2016, I started seeing people in the country use PayPal. Nevertheless, PayPal was too risky at that time.

Those who owned one didn't sign up with their personal information. They used foreign accounts. Buying bitcoin using PayPal in 2010 would be riskier.

I had a PayPal account but not verified in 2015, when a friend in the hostel introduced me to the platform. I tried to verify your year and it didn't seem accurate. I saw an article mentioning 2014, when the announcement was made, the operation started in early 2015. It was difficult to verify then because I didn't have a driver's licence, but it was working for people, they were sending and receiving money until they stopped the operation of receiving payments in Nigeria due to increasing fraud cases.

I saw some influencers trying to force the platform on Nigerians, I am not sure how true about receiving payment through PayPal. They want to enter the Nigerian market since they started to allow the purchase of Bitcoin, but people are not interested. Some people lost big deals when Paypal could have come through for them, but it never came for Nigerians. There are more ways now to access payment and Bitcoin without them.

Seems even OP isn't interested in the topic of discussion in the first place. Undecided

It isn’t ideal to make duplicate threads and people actually out in their time and intellect to be effective in these discussions, you need to pay attention to your threads and not just revamp them after a year since, I find that your previous thread was in April of 2025, that’s a year and some months away.
I think OP just wants to increase the number of posts, because of his brain limitations to think and create different threads or post on other people's threads. So he asks repeatedly and in the end even the best answers are ignored.

I don't know what his purpose is still to ask about a transaction that has passed 16 years ago, I think he is thinking more about something far behind, rather than having to think about what happens in the future. Lol

You have a valid point, but I am also feeling he is writing a script because now going back into 2010 is realistically not possible for anyone, and having things like these are only possible in film or YouTube videos, so he is trying to have a good script and reviews about his idea.

If he is having any idea about 2030 then surely its going to be more realistic and better for all but OP still in shock why he is not having anything good while Bitcoin was in cents now its almost in 5 digits and soon going to be have six digits which could be big one for everyone. Now peoples those ware having engagement in Bitcoin are regretting about why they lost early days because things were possible to be have take good decision back but now its too late like my friend who is still feeling bad as he drop idea and never have this while its moviing in 3 and 4 figures.

Give this article a read, you can know the price of BTC back then.

I don't know much about Liberty Reserve or Paxum. But what I found is that you couldn't deposit money in either of them using a debit or credit card. You needed a broker then. Also, there wasn't enough liquidity on these two either. The price of BTC was too low, that's why the AI must be saying there won't be enough sellers to sell $1k to $10k worth of coins.

But if you look at Bitcointalk, you will find many deals that happened in the same year, and maybe they were not worth $1k to $10k at that moment due to the price of BTC, but they happened. Like the following.

Pizza for bitcoins?
You already know about this deal, it was a successful one.
[OLD] Bitcoin Auction: 10,000.00 BTC --- Starting Bid 50.00 USD
He received zero bids, lucky guy if he still owns them.
First Escrow Transaction (Diablo-D3 & nanotube)
Code:
First escrow transaction takes place
Bitcoin Forum members Diablo-D3 and nanotube conduct the first recorded escrow trade of Bitcoins with theymos as escrow.

You can say if you wanted to buy $1k to $10k worth of coins, you had to find a person who was willing to sell you directly in a P2P deal. You could send money any way you wanted, considering the options available at that time.
