https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2026/09/07/ethereum-commits-to-letting-users-pay-gas-fees-without-having-to-hold-ethSoon with Hegotá upgrade ETH will finally be able to let user do a transactions to an app using EIP-8141 Frame Transaction without the need to pay with ETH, third partry will sponsor the transaction and user will pay in stablecoin in return hence no need for you to top up for fees anymore if you don't want to. I think this will be a good step ahead for ETH to allow seamless transactions, A user who only wants to hold stablecoin can hold stablecoin only and won't be dealing with complicated fees. It doesn't mean ETH will have less value though because the sponsor will settle transaction in ETH and they are receiving stablecoin in return, what do you think?

It would be a great feature if there were no extra fees for withdrawing a portion of stablecoins from the wallet. I recently had an experience where I ran out of funds for fees while swapping on the Ethereum network using MetaMask; my transaction was funded by an address labeled "Gas Station," and in the end, the amount deducted from my swap proceeds was higher than estimated.

There is nothing complicated about the fee, but I noticed many people do not know about the fee paid by the native coin of a blockchain. There are many people that have contacted me before that I had to explain about it before they understood. If ethereum implement this, it will be very good. No need of having ethereum before spending USDT and other ERC20 tokens.

Some other cosmos-based blockchain allow the fees to be paid in non-native coin. I'm not exactly sure whether this will reduce the demand for ETH though. For me, as a holder of ETH, I would prefer that the fees continue to be settled only in ETH.

Is this really a big deal if the transaction fees is not reduced. This is the problem with Ethereum tokens and all tokens under them are mostly of a very high fees when withdrawing. This is good development for those that love Ethereum tokens, it allows them to spend those tokens without having to hold Ethereum anymore. But for those that don’t really like their tokens, this change will not change their stance on the fate of the token.

It doesn't really matter anymore. The good old days when there was so much hype around Ethereum are long gone, and most people jumped off the Ethereum train after being tortured with absurd transaction fees for years.
Just to be honest, how many of us here still very often transact in Ethereum?

It doesn't mean ETH will have less value though because the sponsor will settle transaction in ETH and they are receiving stablecoin in return, what do you think?
How about sending tokens built on Ethereum network, how is that going to be solved, sponsor receive the token in return? What if the user has no stablecoin in the wallet but only have ETH to send, how will stablecoin be returned to the sponsors? Is this going to only work on centralized or decentralized exchange and wallet? If it will be working on centralized exchange, then every centralized exchange will implement and upgrade their exc to the latest Ethereum fee adjustments, This implementation looks easy in the eyes but seems complicating when will be applied.

There's the glamsterdam upgrade and there's also the hegota upgrade. I think that ETH is doing great on these ones.
Because for the former, the upgrade is about increasing the fee limits and I haven't read the entire thing for both but they seem collaborated.
I like it, no need to pay fees for the native transfers of stable coins in the ETH chain.

This is looking like a tricky while users would have to pay high fees when running a transaction whether using Ethereum as a network fee or using stablecoin. The fee amount would be converted in stablecoin and that is what you will be allowed to pay for the transaction to be completed. This is like an exchange asking you to get a loan in crypto while your crypto portfolio is still with them and they have access to it. You will be paying same high fee but this time, it will be in stablecoin and this make no difference to me. The only way this strategy is going to work fine and be seen as a better option is when the gas fee will be reduced from what we have been paying.

EIP-8141 is better than ERC-2271 meta transactions or ERC-4337 paymaster that metamask use, you won't need 40% extra gas and maybe there will be no fee markup, hence cheaper transaction fee even when paying with stablecoin. Having native tx type for this specific scenario is great and will be a huge improvement on quality of life features and lastly stablecoin fee in metamask is disgusting, so expensive.

Ever since the Fusaka upgrade, ethereum transactions are very cheap, even if you are sending altcoins like USDT on ethereum blockchain, the transaction fee is very cheap, unlike before. But I do not know if the transaction will continue to be cheap while paying from another token on ethereum blockchain, but we are going to know if the transaction is cheap or not after the upgrade.

this has always been a kind of limit for using eth. or at least it creates a clear difference from using just bitcoin... definetely the way to pay the fees change a lot the approach on the way to pay. during war fees in 2017 - ico mania, it was easy to pay a single transaction few dollars or just burn small amounts without completing a single transaction

If Im not mistaken, there are some platform who releases a feature like this but I just forgot. Let me check it back which was it. If this happened then majority of users would not be wanting to hold some ethereum anymore considering theres an upgrade coming for this. Some probably like this especially those who dont want to pay in eth, but with a lots of L1 now theres a lot of alternative to use with a very low fees. This will only lessen potential user or interest with the eth ecosystem. Just to be honest, how many of us here still very often transact in Ethereum?
I am still actively using ethereum until now sir. I dont know but most of my dapps interactions are in this L1 eco but I uses others too with lower fees, maybe I just used to this like before even its fee was high.

Many people are not even aware of the concept of gas fee because they are using exchanges as their wallet but this upgrade will allow those kind of users to hold the tokens in the non-custodial wallet itself. I am not following the stablecoin development but the first impression is this will be convenient for the users but what about ETH, will thisndrop the usecase even lower?

This is the greatest thing I could see today. I usually hold USDT, USDC (since most of my favorite platforms also accept crypto since Stripe lets them do) and this can help people like me who do not do trade or develop on Ethereum chain.

I’ve been looking into paymasters; essentially, it’s a 40% business. That means this increase will kill off one type of business within the Ethereum ecosystem. However, what makes me doubt that the fee simply disappears is the fact that validators must receive Ethereum to get their rewards.

Exactly what I think. Without transaction fees in ETH, what will the use case for holding ETH be? Nah, don't worry, the sponsor is still going to pay for the transaction in ETH, it only abstracts the mechanism to be user friendly and the sponsor could be a dapp, a company, or it could even be you. Under the hood, EIP-8141 is still using ETH for the transaction. The sponsor eventually going to convert the stables they received from the user and convert it to ETH again. It doesn't reduce the use case for holding ETH at all, the opposite it will boost transactions and increase demand of ETH.

maybe they took this approach because USDC with their chain also trying to do the same thing.
But hey I do agree with ETH because and I hope this could be implemented on any other chain aswell. It simply make a chain more seamless and efficient in my opinion, Correct me if I am wrong But I do believe that Metmask Trust wallet and other had similiar concept on their wallet feature
