Suspects hunting a bitcoin cold wallet killed Camilo Séptimo keyboardist Jonathan Meléndez, his pregnant wife Ana Paula Barragán, their three-year-old daughter Sofía and 21-year-old domestic worker Aleyda Romero at the family's home, only a six year old boy survived.

The lesson is that we should not use our privacy to joke because crypto physical attack is getting more common.

I read about this on X today, it’s such a sad news article to read. It’s bad enough that he was killed but his pregnant wife and 3 year old daughter were also murdered.

At first I read it that they killed them for $2M worth of Bitcoin which is still absolutely deplorable but it turns out it was 2M pesos which is under $100,000. I hope the authorities find those responsible and sentence them to full life terms or worse.

Although the final outcome is not mentioned in the article, the most ironic aspect of this brutal murder is that the perpetrators merely "believed" the couple held millions of dollars' worth of Bitcoin in a cold wallet. It remains unknown whether they actually obtained what they were after.

As I understand it, the 2M pesos was an offer made to help the mastermind behind the murder retrieve that cold wallet.

A $5 wrench attack doesn't get more brutal than this, such a sad story. I was wondering why the attackers killed this man and his family, but after reading that one of the arrested suspects was a business associate of his, it becomes easier to understand that their intentions were clear, to kill him, irrespective of the outcome of their heist, for the risk of identifying them.

I also believe this suspect was able to get information that Melendez had bitcoins in his possession because he was his business partner. It could be that they talked crypto sometime over a bottle of beer, and then the suspect started to make their plan to steal it from him.

I feel bad for the victim. We've seen numerous wrench attacks or any crypto-related crimes just this year alone, and it will continue in the future. This is the reason why we need to stay silent as much as possible when it comes to our crypto assets because of these kind of crimes. Unless we can afford having a group of bodyguards on our side, let's keep as silent as possible.

What we can hope for is that there will be a reduced in numbers of these crimes. And people who are in crypto space and holds a lot need to lie low and keep themselves a low profile. We're no longer in the time of flexing culture when these criminals are also in the surroundings just lurking looking for their next victim. It's better to look like a broke bloke but the opposite and owns a lot of it because you're hiding your real status with your holdings than someone who looks rich and you actually do but all eyes of these evil guys are on you.

And when you think about it and the fact that they would generally get a final meal of their choice, a final word, a non brutal way of dying et cetera, it often looks like the death penalty is a favor for the criminal who would other wise have to deal with all that happens in the jail, with the psychological blame et cetera until they rot in their cell.

Don't you think it's best to minimize your connection to crypto? Having nothing to be traced to you, in whatever shape or form. Sadly, that happened to the family; it's brutal. The greediness is over the top for this. RIP.

If you don't tell people you own bitcoin and you use privacy tools when necessary, then all is good, except you're unlucky and your personal data is leaked by a KYC platform or your tax office.

$100k is the amount his business partner paid to the killer for getting the wallet, by his own claims!
Or....this is the story they said so far, god knows if there was any crypto at all and the killing was about something else, like a cartel job.

So what the media tells about in some parts of the country or specific to the cartel group, they're all real. I think that people with that much wealth need to lie low and never post anything if they know the dangers that's attached to it. Especially, no bias, if they're in a country that they know there are these influential people and groups that can really carry the weigh of what they say about silencing people for their own gains or for any other reasons.

Whether it’s business partners, trading partners, or close friends, it’s better to keep your assets private. Here, there was no scam project, phishing site, or KYC data leak involved. It was really someone the victim trusted and told about his assets. That is where the betrayal came from.

So, there’s really no reason to telling people how much you own, even to people close to you. This information can be used by the wrong people to rob you and put you and your family at risk.

I have no problem looking broke to everyone while really having millions in my cold wallet. That would be much safer for me. Showing off how much you have usually doesn’t do any good.

That makes us think twice about platforms where we provide our address; we need to be educated on our privacy, not only on how to keep our coins safe but also on how to make it hard to trace.

This kind of attack is starting to spread because they know the assets keep growing, so they are not only stealing the actual amount at the time they steal it, but the huge potential attached to it as you hold the asset
