- Mass adoption implies that a large number of people hold small amounts of bitcoins.  Yet, the reality is the opposite: how can one speak of mass adoption when large volumes of bitcoin are concentrated in the hands of a small number of institutional investors?

Investment funds and mutual funds hold about 405 of all the stock traded on major stock exchanges, so there is no mass adoption happening there?
Elon Musk holding as many dollar bills as a whole capital city in Africa means that fiat is not adopted?
Oh, soda drinks are not adopted because 2 companies produce 2/3 of them globally!
Mobile phones? Lols!

- Large institutional BTC-holders could just as easily crash the price whenever it suits them (for instance, to raise funds by selling off these assets). They wouldn't sell just one or two units of bitcoin; they could sell million's worth, which would undoubtedly impact market conditions.

Yup, because that's a known way rich people get richer: by making dumb decisions and dumping an asset's price to zero so they lose money, making them richer magically...
Definitely, whales are going to crash the price cause that is how whales got their money in the first place, crashing everything!

I need to get in the tinfoil business; it's probably better in profits than BTC and AI and everything else by an order of magnitude!

The thing is, a coin has two sides and similarly the institutionalization of bitcoin has both pros and cons.
Some people will take it positively while the others won't. There's nothing much we can do about it because it's something we cannot control.
So why to worry about something we cannot control. For me personally, I feel the price is rising quickly due to institutions and I like that, so let it keep rising.

People will look at this and think like from now (actually since January 2024), there have been big investors in this market and most of them have successful investment and capital management in traditional markets in many years or decades. Their appearances and participation in Bitcoin market are like a quality and trust marks for this market.

Such things will make more people to believe in Bitcoin, as the herd effects will lead most of them following Bitcoin Spot ETFs and big institutional investors. It will boost Bitcoin adoption faster and more capital gets in the market means price will be upward lifted.

There may be more, but these are the ones I've observed. And, some of the reasons most of us are frowning at it—from my observation—stem from concerns like:

- Centralization of Bitcoin.
- Privacy.
- Political influence. etc.

Yeah, I know, most of us value the disadvantages more than the advantages—I mean, those are the essence of Bitcoin, right?—but then again, we all want the benefits nonetheless Cheesy.

So....I'm just curious, what does the forum think about the institutionalization of Bitcoin, do the pros outweigh the cons? And why?

Bitcoin can be used for anything. And anyone can use Bitcoin for any purpose. But you need to know that the essence of Bitcoin is freedom from third parties, where it is highly beneficial in terms of sovereignty. Bitcoin breaks free from the shackles of centralized systems which is highly beneficial for privacy. On the other hand Bitcoin cannot be controlled by anyone by making it even more secure against anyone trying to control it. And the very limited supply of around 21 million coins is a major advantage for the future. These factors should also serve as reasons why Bitcoin has performed so well so far. And Bitcoin has endured this long because of certain advantages you simply won’t find anywhere else. I personally believe that anyone who adopts Bitcoin is fortunate because of its existence. The rest is up to each individual to decide whether or not they want to accept these benefits which could prove to be highly advantageous.

I do think yeah, the pros outweigh the cons because at the end institutionalisation is a form of bitcoin adoption and I believe if bitcoin gets adapted more and more no matter by whom, the industries or more importantly the people it will increase in value as adoption is the Value. The thing that is adapted to more and the thing that is used commonly is very valuable, and creates more wealth than anything else.. so yeah i think the industrialisation is positive and it benefits BTC more in long term

People are free to sell or buy bitcoins, and if there is something like institutionalization of Bitcoin from participation and purchases of Bitcoin Spot ETFs and other institutional investors, let's focus on actions of different people and entities in Bitcoin market.

They're, as said, free to sell their coins, buy more coins, or simply hold their coins. With this stance, each person, each entity is/ are really free to hold their bitcoins, refuse to sell theirs, and it's like their contributions to de-institutionalize of bitcoin distributions.

It's only whether they realize what's happened and what they are planing to do for their own Bitcoin portfolios and bitcoin distributions in general as well as any contributions for de-institutionalization of Bitcoin.

So....I'm just curious, what does the forum think about the institutionalization of Bitcoin, do the pros outweigh the cons? And why?
When Bitcoin institutionalization intervenes in the crypto market, where many global companies or financial institutions want to adopt crypto assets like Bitcoin, it will certainly have an impact on Bitcoin, both in terms of profits and also real losses.

• The advantages that emerge when Bitcoin Institutionalization enters the crypto market, such as increasing public confidence, especially in Bitcoin, which was previously hesitant, perhaps with the presence of Bitcoin Institutionalization, people will be more confident in Bitcoin investment and trading, people believe that regulations are clear, without hesitation in making investments, there will also be an increase in global liquidity.

• Losses that arise when institutionalization of Bitcoin enters the crypto market, one thing that might happen is that it is easy to manipulate the market and also crypto assets for prices to fall and rise, another bad thing that can happen is that the nature of decentralization has been lost, The reason is that when Bitcoin Institutionalization already has great power, of course they can easily steer the direction of the Bitcoin market, small investors and Bitcoin users can only watch.

This is a solid point, and I like the angle you're looking at it from. Indeed, institutional involvement in Bitcoin is a form of adoption, and a very crucial one. Ever since Bitcoin's added feature—speculative asset/store of value—became almost predominant in its utility, profit-making has become the order of the day. The involvement of institutions is a positive indicator for the future of Bitcoin. This reinforces the fact that Bitcoin is here to stay even in the distant future.

I guess this shift is why a lot of us see institutionalization of Bitcoin as a positive, no?

If Bitcoin takes institutional control, it will definitely be the defeat of Satoshi and the defeat of the decentralized financial system. We cannot accept the defeat of Bitcoin decentralized only for the temptation of acceptance and investor profits.

The two systems can function side by side without one trying to take over the other, there'll be attempts by both but none will overshadow the other. Satoshi said Bitcoin is an alternative and that's what he would have wanted so irrespective of what the institute want, there's always going to be a decentralized system because that was the earliest form of exchange when people traded P2P with any valuables they own without needing the government (third party or centralised system) and all this happened before fiats were introduced. Bitcoin isn't going to be control by the government, they don't benefits anything from controlling Botvoin as fiats still own the majority of the market and they control that already. What they'll try to do is kill Bitcoin as they have always tried in the past or just ignore it.

Hello guys 👋🏽 hope we're all doing well wherever we are.

Recently, I've found myself in conversations mentioning the institutionalization of Bitcoin—spots ETFs, cooperate treasuries, reserve, and regulated custody. Some of us do have a negative view of it, and that is justified. But, there are some upsides to it too, right? Things like:

- Increased adoption.
- Acceptability.
- Price increase. etc.

And why?

I think institutional adoption is a double-edged sword. It brings more liquidity and legitimacy, but Bitcoin’s decentralized nature should never be compromised. The challenge is getting the benefits without losing what makes Bitcoin valuable in the first place.

...we all want the benefits nonetheless Cheesy.

And there are differences of opinion in regards to what those benefits are or on how they are
prioritized. The majority of people with Bitcoin will more than likely prioritize growth in value,
or to put it bluntly "when lambo". Get as much as possible out of it and walk away -
thats my perception - but not for everyone.

So in terms of growth those people would likely welcome institutional attention on Bitcoin
because it inevitably can lead to an increase in value, thats the bottom line.

For me I prioritize "wealth preservation" and value the decentralisation of the Bitcoin network
more than a short to medium term increase in price/value.

Its a toss up and a fine balance between institutional attention and decentralisation, no point
in fighting the former because it cannot be stopped but decentralisation is worth fighting for.

How do we Minnows resist decentralisation? buy and HODL, run a node if possible.

I think Bitcoin is going just fine, not institutionally corrupted entirely, we do have a majority of individual holders/investors, and we have those who keep using Bitcoin as a decentralized system of payment, Neither do the pros outweigh the cons nor the disadvantages outweigh the advantages, as of lately.

Irrespective of institutional adoption, individual investors are not losing, they can enjoy the benefits of institutional adoption and that of individual ownership.

The Bitcoin market is an open market where everyone can participate, but because of this, it makes it possible for more institutions to get involved and gain exposure to Bitcoin. This can be beneficial for Bitcoin because the more people adopt Bitcoin, the higher its value could be.
However, it also has a downside that when these institutions start accumulating more Bitcoin, it increases the centralization of ownership and more institutions might end up holding Bitcoin. That's not a good thing because it means the majority of Bitcoin ownership is in the hands of a relatively small number of large holders, giving them more influence over the market. Even though there are benefits from institutional adoption, this centralization is still a bad thing in the long run.

OP;
That headline is a bit sensationalist Wink let's just say that this shift is embodied by the new players who have emerged over the years—many of whom, incidentally, used to criticize Bitcoin but now accept it. So, they are the ones who have institutionalized Bitcoin, right? Anyway, I actually started a similar thread recently—"Institutional trading vs. me"—and that’s the point: at the end of the day, it’s up to you. Everyone chooses which side to take, but regardless of that, Bitcoin remains the same.

More institutions entering Bitcoin can actually bring legitimacy and maybe a wider adoption, but I think we should not automatically assume that institutional ownership means Bitcoin itself is becoming centralized. And I think the main concern is custody and concentration and if a few institutions control huge amounts of Bitcoin on behalf of many people, their influence over the market can increase and that is why self custody, remains  important.

This is what makes most people feel a little worried. Whereas in the past the market was often driven by whales, currently the market may be largely controlled by ETFs. It has been proven that in several previous periods, ETFs acted as a support for Bitcoin prices during some periods of poor global economic conditions, preventing it from falling too much. The current situation is very different from that of 2017/2018. It is very difficult to gain profit because the circulated money has been divided across many markets and types of coins or tokens. Nevertheless, market centralization will remain a major factor in investors feeling fearful. Although there are indeed some positive aspects to be gained, because ETFs are licensed official institutions that can increase trust among new investors through profit sharing schemes.

Everyone is completely free in giving his own views on how things are going in the past and now in the future, but one thing is always important: more adoption means more stability and spread. It's always important because of how things are working; everyone is well aware of this. Adoption will surely never have negativity on this because this will give good development, and with the features that are already working, it will also give better profit in the long run.

In short term its always needs better understanding of risk management because things are never been easy to control but surely with the better understanding and having good control peoples will be do much better and able to enjoy all despite having any fear of how its going to be have impact after this mass adoption by institutes.

The only cons that can be with the institutionalization of Bitcoin is the possibility of censorship where by, we tend to imagine a situation where these institutions, ETFs and the whales can pull forces together and influence the direction of Bitcoin market. Still, this is highly speculated as the possibility of pulling in forces together make this happen is very unlikely.

It however has several pros which connotes Bitcoin as;
1. Security
2. Safe to invest
3. Profitable asset

And more.
There are several takes one can get from this, it just depends on the side from which you’re looking.

They are advantages of Bitcoin but Bitcoin is unable to secure and protect anyone because at the end people have their own practice and have to be responsible with all these things as well as any consequence if they do things incorrectly and unsafely.

From wallet choosing, wallet downloading, verification, to other steps like wallet creation, backup, backup test for recovery, storage of wallets and wallet backups, if any step is done incorrectly and not safely, it can break security of their bitcoin fund, and no longer safe.

Profitable or not, it only makes sense for each bitcoin holder if he does not lose his bitcoin to hacks or mistakes.

First off, I'm afraid there's no getting away with the institutionalization of Bitcoin. It has happened. So, whether that's generally bad or good, that's what it is.

Just days ago, I've read in the news that even Jack Dorsey, who was a Bitcoin maximalist, a champion of decentralization and self-custody, has applied for a banking charter. He wants to establish a bank and custodies Bitcoin. It seems in the end we're all the same; says one thing, does another.

Do the pros outweigh the cons? It seems so. We're brought mainstream. Bitcoin is no longer the criminal's money. In the end, Bitcoin remains essentially the same. Regardless of its institutionalization, even if it has largely turned into a speculative asset rather than a peer-to-peer currency, it still is a peer-to-peer currency.

Some people are fighting for their personal interests regardless of whether it means well for the society, people like Jack Dorsey are why there's a saying that "if you can't beat them, join them". That's the only reason why a Bitcoin maximalist would apply for a banking charter to establish a bank that would custody Bitcoin, it's goes against self custody and decentralisation.

Bitcoin has become so valuable and adopted for different purposes, mostly as a store of value currently so people shouldn't expect that it should only be seen as a peer-to-peer currency as formally known. It's still serving that purpose and more, depending on believers use case for it.
