Normally for Bitcoin, once you don get control of a UTXO, you don automatically become who go decide who fit spend am. But what if you fit also set rules for how them go fit also spend the Bitcoins too?

Na this be the basic idea behind Bitcoin covenants.

For example, with the help of this covenant, you go fit set rules make e be say Bitcoin only fit send go certain addresses or under specific conditions. This fit make things like Bitcoin vaults, recovery systems, and some Layer-2 solutions more secure and useful.

Although, proposals like OP_CTV and OP_CAT dey try solve this problem, but dem no dey approach am the same way. Each one get different technical benefits and risks.

The main question no be just whether covenants dey useful. The bigger question be whether adding this kind programmability go introduce new risks or complexity we never fully understand.

You think covenants go make Bitcoin self-custody and scaling better, or e fit compromise some of the simplicity and security wey Bitcoin dey known for?

For those wey understand wetin I dey talk abeg make Una chook mouth…

E good to see say Bitcoin developers dey really work hard to make sure using Bitcoin and self custody dey easy and enjoyable for everybody. I don dey look this covenant matter for a while now, and I been even get for mind to also bring up this topic here for others to chook mouth, but I never get time to draft the topic, but e good as you don do am now, at least e go relieve me that stress lol.

Anyways, me I really like the idea and concept of this Bitcoin Covenant because I feel say e go really help Bitcoin, especially for things like Bitcoin Vaults, security and better self custody. But you know as them talk am, anything wey get advantage also get disadvantage and vulnerabilities, the idea itself don make sense wella, but the only issue na make the extra programmability no come go bring new security risks and bigger vulnerabilities wey go come dey worry people tomorrow or even complicate Bitcoin consensus. One of the biggest strength wey Bitcoin get na it’s simplicity and predictability, so if new updates go come, na to try make them no comot these factors.

I'm hearing something called Bitcoin Covenant for the first time, even though you are trying to bring it up as an idea that can improve on the idea as suggested and make it a programmable development to increase Bitcoin security and transferability, as you have suggested, but anything that does not give you maximum Protection for privacy will not be a perfect idea. There is a lot to discover on how this has already been handled in the Bitcoin network through the wallet security and privacy measures we learn about Bitcoin.

We just have to be careful by using any third party platform or development initiative in pursue to secure our asset and lose it at the end because of the vulnerability this might create.

Na exactly the same thing wey dey my mind when I been read about this thing, because like this small thing fit just cause another problem wey go fit affect the network and even if them later correct am, the thing fit don cause one or two damage. As we get better programmers wey want the good of Bitcoin, na so we get bad ones too wey dey find the easiest opportunity to fit exploit the system so any small loophole now, them don grab am be that.

Well that’s a valid point, especially the part about using third party solutions and services. But the only thing here about this covenant is that (according to what I’ve read) it’s not really a third party platform like others, but more of a proposed change to Bitcoin’s scripting capabilities. The whole idea and question that’s worth exploring is whether this initiative would be able to successfully improve privacy without having to create new privacy, consensus and security risks. But I believe before this officially becomes a part of Bitcoin’s rules, it must have already been carefully and thoroughly tested and reviewed by experts.

That is BIP119 which is OP_CHECKTEMPLATEVERIFY or OP_CTV. It has not been part of bitcoin protocol but still under proposal.

BIP347 OP_CAT which can also be used is still under proposal and not yet also under bitcoin protocol.

It will be a good if this are part of bitcoin because it will be an extra protection of people bitcoin. I will use it if it part of bitcoin protocol.

Well if these proposals later got implemented then I think they might really help in the inheritance procedure for someone’s coin to their heir making it more simplified and even better secured, even though Timelocks and other options exists right now but a more conditioned spending might actually be better.

It will be a great improvement in the network especially for those that hold their coins themselves i.e Self Custody.

There sure will be more protocol risks that will come with adding it and there are also lots of cons that will come with it and not many people will even love to see this added and their reasoning is valid.

Covenant can make the bitcoin Self Custody better to some extent and also it might compromise the simplicity of bitcoin and Free spending, the discussion is actually very long if we’re talking about this because it might change the underlying essence of Bitcoin inception to an extent.

The balance between security and simplicity it one of the biggest thing to watch here, im a situation were covenants can help out things like inheritance and recovery it will be a strong use case if it not making Bitcoin too complex. And also changes at protocol level should be taken slowly cause fixing vulnerability affects the deployment may not be simple as to fixing of a normal software bug.

Just as you yan, before them go make am official say make people start to use that thing, different people wey sabi the eye supposed don first checkmate am to see whether e go actually dey safe for people to use. As long as them go make am in a way wey people go fit use and understand am wella, because even if the thing no cause any problem later and e work perfectly but people find am difficult to understand because of the too many plenty technicalities wey full am, then e mean say them no really succeed completely to make bitcoin experience and use easy for people.
