As of September 2026, no existing quantum computer can break the cryptography that protects Bitcoin. The real threat has a technical name — a "cryptographically relevant quantum computer" (CRQC) — meaning a machine with enough stable qubits to run Shor's algorithm against an elliptic curve in useful time. That machine does not exist yet, but the estimated resources it would require dropped sharply in 2026, reviving the debate about when — not if — the network needs to migrate to quantum-resistant signatures. Quantum will crack bitcoin tomorrow is FUD still as the CRQC aren't reality yet but the "resource estimates keep coming down" is what make the talk around migration no longer pure FUD.

The original problem was never the UTXO set in itself but reused/exposed pubkeys, such as donation addresses, old outputs and so on. The real focus of the efforts required needs to be soft-fork ready PQ signatures and wallets no longer splashing public keys about, not a panic sell off.

I hope the community/core manages to ship this upgrade path before an actual Shor's machine exists such that it turns out to be nothing but an interesting story on engineering. A messy situation occurs, instead if we get headlines that say "CRQC demos", which I strongly suggest is not the preferred path.

Bitcoin has different cryptography components
The current dilemma and risk is on elliptic curve not SHA 256.
The issue we may face is as a result of one of Bitcoin strength in being decentralised and it's immutability
Unlike centralised system that need relatively less deliberation or consideration in transitioning into a quantum resistant signature.
