Most valuable and expensive things are often recognized by the potential it has or the usefulness it will be today or in the future. Gold is just seen as valuable and expensive asset because people made it so. If not gold should not have been so cherished. I believe our ancestors choosing gold, and people sticking with that view for thousands of years, wasn't random or accidental. There's a reason for it. And like you said, to value something, you need to understand what it's useful for.
