Just noticed that US spot Bitcoin ETFs had around $460M in net outflows this week. Last week was almost the opposite, with close to $1B coming in, so that's a pretty noticeable change.
BTC BTC has also been struggling around the $80k area and is back around the high $70ks now.
Not saying this automatically means we're heading down or anything, but it's interesting to see the ETF flows changing this quickly. Could just be some profit taking, or maybe people are getting a bit more cautious.
Do you think we'll see another week of net ETF outflows, or could the inflows start coming back already?

Nobody knows, but we can only guess. What that can not be guessed but accurate is where the price is going after a very long time like 2 or 3 years from now. The ETF inflow will grow higher. Bitcoin is having high resistance around $76000. Bitcoin outflow around that price will be minimal or there would be inflow around the price again. But if bitcoin continues to get to the price, it is very possible there would be more outflow for the short period of time.

We are going to need to start aggressively dipping in order to reach a new bottom in Q4. I think that is what a large majority of the market is waiting for (a retest of the lows) before piling back in. Will that dip come to fruition? That’s anyone’s guess, but it is clearly what the market is expecting at the moment.

Okay, so we don't know anything, because we don't know what's going to happen next week. Do you think we'll see another week of net ETF outflows, or could the inflows start coming back already?
I have no idea, but as I said in another thread yesterday, I've been pretty pessimistic all year, and I wouldn't be surprised if we saw even lower lows than we've seen so far. I say this hoping I'm wrong, of course, and that the price will go to $100,000 and beyond, but I don't think that's the most likely scenario.

So it's still positive, $1B inflow last week and then an outflow of $460M this week. And the price itself, though struggling to break $80k, is still not falling much, so it's really hard to tell. What I can say is that even if we see a big inflow, it doesn't mean they'll stay for the long term, and this short-term outflow doesn't mean they already lost trust in Bitcoin. They could simply be reducing their short-term risk.

It's just market fluctuations.
Majority of those who decide to go the centralized route and put their money into [centralized] ETF instead of just buying bitcoin directly like a normal person are not looking for keeping their money parked in bitcoin; they don't believe in bitcoin, maybe they don't even like it! Instead they are fans of the centralized system and fans of fiat. To them a bitcoin ETF is just a way to make some quick [fiat] profit so that they can move on to the next fiat related thing.
Therefore when the bitcoin price is rising, they get into an ETF to get that "exposure" and make a profit. When the rise slows down, they quickly get out and move their capital into some other centralized crap to make more [fiat] profit.
These movements are not indicating anything at all. They are reactions to the market movements that take place in the real bitcoin market.

If they actually care about following things like privacy, anonymity somewhat, and ability of completely control their money, their funds, as well as censorship resistance, irreversible transactions, they will dislike bank system, stay away from bank system and centralized platforms like Bitcoin Spot ETFs. Then very naturally they will see the strength of Bitcoin, and choose Bitcoin as their favorite one against bank system and centralized platforms. Hence, they will have no convincing reason to put their money into such platforms, and Bitcoin Spot ETFs will not be their choices. People who chose Bitcoin Spot ETFs truly did not understand about Bitcoin and its strength, so by putting money into Bitcoin Spot ETFs, they only cared about promising chance of making profit, and ignored many other things which in fact are more important. They can still be able to make same profit, even more by don't have to pay service fees to Bitcoin Spot ETFs but be their self custodians.

This is indeed a fluctuation, but it made me think about something, namely the topic of ETF outflows: We can see how many different hacks are currently taking place using artificial intelligence and social engineering, and recently I started thinking that perhaps the next target for hackers will be the custodial services of Bitcoin ETFs. And realizing this, those ETF investors (who neglected their own custody) decided to withdraw their assets from these companies. And it’s quite likely that if they haven’t considered any assets that are more interesting to them than Bitcoin, then perhaps they will buy it themselves and store it themselves. You have to admit that the chance of this isn’t zero. And so there’s a chance that Bitcoin ETFs are currently experiencing outflows - but that’s because those who want to store Bitcoin now trust themselves to do so, rather than relying on an external intermediary. This theory is supported by the Bitcoin price, which hasn’t changed much.

I can't say what it is exactly, but if I have to guess, I would say it's just profit taking. Bitcoin has been low for a while, so now that Bitcoin has gone up, it's normal for some people to take profit, especially ETF guys that are not really in the long term business. They need the short term profit. It's normal.
It's not like the situation you're describing is impossible; it's possible that ETF companies can be hacked and all, but it's not really practical. There have been a lot of hacks, that is for sure, but nothing about those hacks has raised the panic level enough for people to want to take their funds out of ETFs. I don't believe there are people who are above being hacked, anybody can get hacked, including banks, but I don't see people take their money out of banks for fear of being hacked. This is because nothing has shown that their money is at risk of being stolen through a hack on the bank. So, I don't agree with your theory.

I don't think too much about changes that affect the price in the short term, because bitcoin investors should always be prepared for what happens even when bearish will still be willing to buy. For this reason, long-term investors often do not have much action with conditions at a glance on the price of bitcoin. ETF inflows and outflows move rapidly, and manipulating market prices has become part of their standard playbook.

We have to remember that ETFs have become a strong support for BTC prices to hold today. The flow of funds in and out will greatly affect Bitcoin's price. If outflows continue to grow, then Bitcoin's price might drop again. Looking at the 1D chart, I feel a little worried that BTC's price could fall below $70k. Remember, there's an important Fed agenda coming up. The routine FOMC agenda. The next Federal Open Market Committee meeting is scheduled for September 15–16, 2026. Then there's a prediction that interest rates might rise because other developed countries have already raised their benchmark rates. Why are they pulling out? There could be a lot of speculation that we don't understand. CMIIW

Yeah, maybe they don't actually believe in a completely decentralized system like Bitcoin, or they are simply concerned about the risks involved, such as losing their coins. With things like cold wallet exploits and other security risks, they might also be confused about which method is safest for storing their Bitcoin. Instead of going through all that stress, they may simply prefer investing in ETFs and getting exposure to Bitcoin without having to hold the coins directly. I believe Bitcoin is still on its way to breaking the $86k resistance. The retracements may not last very long, as they could be gathering enough momentum for another attempt to break through and continue upward. Bitcoin still has a long way to go before reaching its previous ATH, so there could still be plenty of room for further upside.

To be honest there is some truth here, but we should also separate bitcoin ownership from bitcoin price exposure. Someone buying a spot bitcoin ETF doesn’t really mean they believe in bitcoin or wants to use it as money. That might just simply want to profit from bitcoin’s price. However, ETF activity isn’t completely meaningless either. Spot ETFs hold actual bitcoin, and when there are net inflow, the funds generally need to acquire bitcoin, and when there are redemption, bitcoin maybe sold. This can actually affect market demand and price. The important point is that an ETF doesn’t give the same control as holding bitcoin yourself. With self custody, you control the private key and transactions directly from bitcoin network. But With an ETF you Own shares in a financial product and depend on the funds and its custodians, so I would not use ETF inflow alone as prove that bitcoin adoption is growing. It only show that there is increase in financial demand and exposure.

My problem with such threads and observations is that they try to extract a "prediction" from a small price movement. If the price falls ~6% (82k to 77k), then it is quite obvious, or at least likely, that this will also be reflected in ETF outflows. The price decrease has to come from somewhere, right? And ETF volumes are, unfortunately (for those who don't like this centralization) quite significant. The few US ETFs hold 30% as many Bitcoins (~1.3 million) as all regular exchanges (~3-4 million) together, approximately. So I think it's difficult to extract any prediction from this. I personally would have expected a more aggressive profit taking, but this can still happen -- until now I am quite surprised how well the 77k area holds. And if this continues for weeks, both exchanges and ETFs should register inflows again if confidence on a bullish outcome would be building up.

Bitcoin popularity has gone up to a level that now its not possible for big institutes to abandon it completely. May be institutes are pulling their money out of Bitcoin for investing in some other sector but still a considerable portion of institutes money will be parked in Bitcoin ETF. Remember companies started investing in Bitcoin because of its popularity worldwide and its not that Bitcoin become popular because of investment that came from big companies. The big institutes know that if they leave Bitcoin completely then they will do their loss only.
