Minting NFTs on Polygon for $0 in 2026 — What Actually Works
Lazy minting vs. gasless minting vs. standard minting, with real numbers

    https://strategiccryptoreserve.ca/polygon.png

Every few months someone posts asking why it costs $40 to mint a single NFT. The answer is that they're minting on Ethereum mainnet in 2026 for no reason. The same token, same metadata, same ERC-721 standard, minted on Polygon, costs a fraction of a cent — or literally nothing, depending on which path you take.

I wrote up the full walkthrough here:

Short version below for anyone who doesn't want to click.

The part most people get wrong: "free" means two different things

These get used interchangeably and they are not the same mechanism.

    1. Lazy minting — Your NFT exists as metadata and a marketplace listing, but nothing is written to chain yet. The buyer pays gas at the moment of first sale. If it never sells, you never paid anything. Supported on OpenSea and Rarible.

    2. Gasless minting — Your NFT is written on-chain immediately and the platform eats the gas. Polygon's own NFT Minter does this via Biconomy meta-transactions.

    3. Standard minting — You pay gas yourself in POL. On Polygon that currently averages around $0.0047 per transaction. Technically not free. Practically, you'd need to mint ~213 NFTs to spend a dollar.

The difference matters: lazy minting gives you marketplace reach but your token isn't real until someone buys it. Gasless minting gives you a real on-chain asset but no built-in audience. Pick based on which problem you have.

Method 1 — Lazy mint on OpenSea (easiest entry point)

    [list=1]
    • Install MetaMask. Browser extension or mobile. New wallet, seed phrase stored offline. You need zero crypto to begin.
    • Add Polygon Mainnet. Settings → Networks → Add Network. Chain ID 137, RPC https://polygon-rpc.com, currency POL. OpenSea will also prompt you automatically on first connect.
    • Connect to OpenSea. opensea.io → "Create" → connect wallet → select Polygon as the chain.
    • Create the collection. Name, description, logo, category. Set royalties — 2.5% to 10% is the normal band. Blockchain: Polygon.
    • Add the item. Upload image/audio/video, fill in name, description, properties. Don't hit "List for sale" yet.
    • List it. On Polygon, OpenSea lazy mints by default. The item goes live on the marketplace instantly. No gas charged until someone buys.

Method 2 — Polygon's official NFT Minter (truly gasless)

polygon.technology/nft-minter. Fully gasless via Biconomy. Writes to chain immediately — no lazy mint step. Supports ERC-721 and ERC-1155, soulbound tokens, unlockable content, and physical-item redemption links. Best option if you want a genuine on-chain asset at zero cost and you're handling distribution yourself.

    Method 3 — Rarible

Middle ground. Lazy minting supported, stronger creator tooling than OpenSea in some areas, smaller audience. Covered in the full guide.

    Quick FAQ

Do I need POL tokens at all?
For lazy minting on OpenSea or Rarible — no, none. For standard on-chain minting — a small amount, under a cent per transaction. For Polygon's official Minter — none, it's fully gasless.

What happens if my lazy-minted NFT never sells?
Nothing. No gas was ever spent. That's the entire point of the mechanism.

    Is a lazy-minted NFT "real"?
It's a signed voucher until purchase, at which point it's minted on-chain for real. If you need provable on-chain existence from day one — for a whitelist, a snapshot, a soulbound credential — use gasless or standard minting instead.

Disclosure: I run Strategic Crypto Reserve, a parody-disclosed NFT and token project on Polygon operating out of the Comox Valley, British Columbia, alongside a small Bitcoin mining setup. The guide is free, ungated, and has nothing to sell you — our own collections were minted using exactly the methods described above, which is why I know the gas numbers hold up. $SCR tokens and SCR NFTs are for entertainment and community utility only. Not financial advice, not a security, no guarantee of returns. DYOR.
