I miss coins with an actual purpose.
Where I can go mine some X coins, and use them for an awesome useful service.

If someone was to make something today.. It should be AI related.. Its all the craze..
BUT it should be useful.. Not another chat wrapper, not another PoW coin that claims to do useful work, but doesn't actually offer this useful work as a product/service.

I have been away for a long time, so I am probably very ignorant in terms of projects that are working looking into.

So.. What do you recommend?
Im interested in projects with real products/services that are in demand and provide real value.

I suggest you stick with old utility coins you used to mine. Actually the great majority of cryptocurrencies have the same utility which is being a trading instrument, nothing more. If you already have mining stuff, go try some of them, plenty of them are discussed in mining communities. But if you are planning to manage a mining farm from scratch, you better choose one of the already existing projects. I see monero still enjoyable for solo mining but you have to deal with exchange platforms since most of them delist privacy coins. Also litecoin is a still a profitable coin. Good luck

I don't think today's meta is different from many years ago; even today, I don't see any useful "utility coins" except those that are used for stablecoin transactions (yes, nowadays stablecoins are the norm), like ETH, BNB, Base, Arbitrum, Polygon, and Avalanche. All of them are just for paying gas for stablecoin transactions.

Nowadays, money is concentrated in ETF coins, like BTC, ETH, and ZEC, so much that eyes are laser-focused on these coins. This and AI hype powered by NVIDIA et al. make the situation worse; hence, the result is a lack of innovation and development of something new in the crypto space.

Perhaps only RWA tokens are something relatively new these days, but I don't have a particular interest in these tokens.

I don't think you can have such opportunity again, there are many repeated coins that were mine and are all are dead now, some are just holding up.

AI is the new trend now because many people see it as a new thing but I don't think there is any trend in the market right now. Different coins get pumped each day that you know no reason why they are pumped. Maybe some market makers are just looking for ways to make liquidity out of other traders, they are not worth holding or any investment.

Some old altcoins are still worth paying attention, I saw Zcash did numbers recently and many people made money from it. You should pay attention to them but be be careful of altcoins. Don't buy into any hype that will fade away later.

The industry moves like a wave, at one time, something is trending, at another time, another whole thing is trending.
I have not been so much into altcoins, but I remember those days that coin utility used to be the most important thing to look out for.
Today, utility no longer carry the weight. It first shifted to hype, with the emergence of meme coins.

While other developers where looking for utility, a few built their coin around hype and numerical strength. Who has more influencers wins the game. Now we are in the AI stuff things and so but my joy is that it's not ending here. We are definitely evolving to some other things.

But if we are looking at longevity, we should not disregard utility.

This isn't the era anymore. Most of those tokens with utility are dead, and not many have survived. Even for tokens with strong communities and promising use cases, many have been abandoned by people. I think it's time for those tokens to be replaced by projects that can offer something more relevant and appealing to people. Moreover, people are now more selective in choosing which tokens they want to invest in. When a token no longer generates real value and doesn't have an attractive ecosystem, there's no longer a reason for people to hold it.

I remember old projects pretending to be utility coins, but they were built shifting to hype. I can't remember real utility coins but those from old days like LTC and XMR. Memecoins are also a newly emerging trend but the wave has been started long before with Dogecoin.

As for solo miners, they always look for safety, and this why utility coins is their best option. Nowadays, it becomes like gambling for them  to chose what to run their devices for.

If I can well remember, Grin is one of the great utility coins. But it is not yet widely popular despite the high level of privacy it provides. I can't tell if it is profitable for miners.

We have enough of them already, probably in the thousands with no demand for it, so there is no point in launching a new coin with the similar purpose. And then how many investors are behind the uses cases? They are all falling for the hype and probably they will invest if they see a project tageed with the term AI rather than doing their own analysis about it to make the long term investment.

If you look around, there's still plenty of them.

There's just always new coins that comes that have their respective narrative but the best ones are still in the market.

Start it around with the top coins and you'd see that they have their own usage per se.

If it wasn’t the title I wouldn’t even read the thread, I truly miss that as well. It’s been a very long time since I joined any utility project with cool features and ideas. Useful and knowledgeable community members are almost disappearing now, the whole crypto space became full of AI or memecoins without any utility nor fixing any of the community problems.

I am also interested to hear any new projects that are offering useful tools with their coins. Real value projects are the ones we should invest in these days not hype and trendy projects that are lasting for a week or a month at best.

You are right with the uncertainty and disconnection between, real services in utilities that is tied to an AI coin, or just making mainstream because of the hypes created around those AI related projects,. The truth is that choosing AI project for long to assets is kind of risky compared to other crypto assets, like those tokens that actually provides utilities in form of fees for exchanges or networks.

That is precisely the problem right now: all these altcoins are designed solely to generate hype; they lack real-world utility or underlying value. Once the hype dies down, most of them lose up to 99% of their value. As the OP mentioned, we miss utility coins; hopefully, one day these hype-driven coins will disappear completely, and we will start seeing projects that actually matter. I miss the old days of doing proper research and making investment decisions based on that.

Utility coins still exist, unfortunately it's all pre minted and no mining mechanism because almost all of them are VC funded and VC don't want something to do with mining, they want instant flip hence pre minted tokenomics, at least the utility is still there. Some that I knew that I suppose really have utility is RNDR token and IO, both provide GPU market and you can use their tokens, you know how scarce GPU has been lately, RTX 5090 price has doubled and so on and everybody is looking for one whether to buy or rent, their GPU always sold out and it's closest to AI with a catch, product market fit doesn't always equal to price performances. For real utility not based on current market hype, always XMR, ZEC, and ETH.

You're going to have a hard time finding projects with real utility. Because most crypto projects are speculative by design. In other words, they're full of hype. I can only recommend old crypto projects such as Monero and Litecoin. The rest is just noise. This is very unfortunate, because developers used to care a lot about utility in the early days. Now, they're focused in filling their pockets with money. The rising trend of "meme" coins and AI-based tokens, tells us exactly this.

With the industry getting more centralized as a result of the "institutionalization" of crypto ("Wall Street"), I wouldn't expect things to get better in the future. And trust me, PoW coins aren't simply worth the time and effort. Especially with their low market prices and high energy costs. Bitcoin is the only exception. Perhaps, this is the reason why PoW is almost extinct. The market is full of PoS "shitcoins". Another reason why everything's speculative. I'd just stick to old cryptos that are still being traded across exchanges, and forget about the rest.

No offense but there are better old projects than on Monero and Litecoin. One example would be is Bitcoin. Bitcoin is the first, so Monero and Litecoin prolly get some inspiration with it due to their coin's design. I think we still have the same devs as before. They are just taking care of their gold-old projects, while the ones you see that are on hype are just another greedy individual which doesn't have an imagination to create a long term and solid project.

Even though institutions can contribute in centralization, we can't deny their help being given in crypto. Adoption, anyone? POS mechanism is about being decentralized, so this is the ones that we must support if we dislike centralization.

Are you saying that you would like to see more snake oil in the market that you can mine and sell, that everyone can forget later on as useless hyped shitcoins.

Imho whole term of "utility coin" is misleading. Every coin has an utility, even if it's made up that no one needs.

I recall that around 2023 and 2024, there were several altcoins with AI narratives, such as Worldcoin and Render. I had also heard of TAO, NEAR, and FET, but as I remember it, Render generated the most hype at the time. If I recall correctly, the hype surrounding AI-narrative tokens coincided with the trend for RWA (Real World Asset) tokens like Ondo and HBAR. I believe that the trend of coins with AI-related utility is nothing new; furthermore, launching a new project with an AI narrative today likely wouldn't yield any benefits for developers, as I currently don't see a clear direction regarding trends, hype, or narratives in the altcoin space.
