I’ve been thinking about the intersection of AI agents and Bitcoin/Lightning, especially the idea of AI agents being able to make small autonomous payments for APIs, data, compute, or other services.

With Python and the current AI ecosystem, it seems technically possible to build agents that can discover a service, pay a small amount in sats, use it, and continue working without human intervention.

I’m wondering whether this could become a real business opportunity—for example, pay-per-use APIs or specialized services that AI agents can access through Lightning.

Has anyone here experimented with AI agents making Bitcoin/Lightning payments, or seen interesting projects in this area?

Several companies have already begun implementing and offering such automation infrastructure[1][2]. However, you should view this technology as an open-ended experiment and avoid entrusting large amounts of Bitcoin to it.

I am not an expert in these matters; I simply understand the technical rules regarding spending: whoever holds the key can spend the funds. This means you must grant the AI access to your key for the payment system to function seamlessly. That is an obvious point of vulnerability right from the start. In recent months, AI agents have been exploited using nothing more than prompt injection methods[3].

Do you mean L402 protocol something like -----> https://github.com/lightninglabs/LangChainBitcoin? If you mean that, then it is possible and easy, but instead of giving the AI agent direct access to the funds, it is better to use remote signer architectures(like LND remote signers) to limit the tasks to payment procedures or issuing invoices.

I've several news like this. Kinda wild seeing how some AI found bugs and exploit them, while at the same time being exploited with injections and whatnot. I guess that shows how young this tech is. Not to mention older tech also got exploited every now and then.

I don't think my feelings towards using AI for autonomous payments (or anything sensitive) will change unless there's a feature that limit them. Even in my bank account with regular payment option I avoided them since I don't trust how secure they are. I feel it's just a case of waiting a big exploit to happen.

Good point. I hadn’t considered using a remote signer to keep the private keys isolated from the AI agent. Thanks for pointing that out.

yes, this is already happening and AI agents are buying compute, data and other services autonomously

Giving 10-50 dollars in crypto to agent is not a big risk. I have tried myself this experiment giving 50USD in BTC to Deepseek Flash agent and it behaved very coherently doing very diligent purchases. Even gave me back the unspent bitcoin in its wallet.

I'm doing something similar.  What started out as AI trading evolved into building an algorithm which is now evolving back into using AI to help make decisions.  Besides being the most productive technology I've ever worked with, it is a lot of fun watching your ideas come to life.  Definitely worth risking a few dollars on.  I've had so many different realizations from working with AI building things.  It is like gaining experience at an accelerated rate.  I wish I had this when I was younger.

I would only advice building and training your own models that you have control over yourself.
and still i wouldnt trust it with a whole lot but small dollar figures can't hurt for sure i agree.

What's the cost for doing that though? I'm sure you don't mean collecting datasets on our own and training with many high-end GPUs, I'm just wondering what kind of training a regular user could do if they need for auto payments. Maybe my imagination is limiting me, but what kind of tasks or calls requires specific training that open models can't do at the moment? Unless we're dealing with a very specific sets of data. I wonder what kind of data is required for something like that though.
