Did you know that it was Star Trek in 1967 that lead to all countries agreeing to not weaponize space?  It's been the longest cooperation between world members, and Trump just destroyed it by officially announcing US weapons in space. Both China and Russia (meh) have condemned it and will probably start releasing their own weapons soon.

Orbital warfare is not similar to terrestrial warfare.  It's a one time destruction of all orbital infrastructure on both sides - it cannot be stopped once started.

There is a reason why they won't quit building, even though it doesn't feel right— they fear that other countries will do it anyway, dominate in that aspect, become a threat, attack their assets, and compete for resources or try to colonize space... So they think unless there is no threatening country to compete with we won't stop building

Remembered many years ago they considered building some kind of gaint "magnet" to attract and trap space debris. And ofcourse, there are alots of artificial debris in space
