When most people buy altcoins, they only look at the dollar price and assume the altcoin is rising significantly on its own merit; in reality, however, the altcoin's price is surging in dollar terms simply because the price of Bitcoin is rising. This implies that if the price of Bitcoin doesn't go up, neither does the altcoin's price indicating a lack of genuine interest in that altcoin. We need only look at the XRP/BTC chart, for example:

Six years have passed, and the price of XRP relative to Bitcoin has only fallen with no signs of rising; in fact, it is in a position where it could drop even further. Meanwhile, over that same six year period, Bitcoin’s price has seen significant ups and downs but currently sits well above where it was six years ago. Ultimately, this means that between buying XRP and Bitcoin, buying Bitcoin is the far more reliable choice. For instance, those who bought Bitcoin when it dropped to $62,000 and sold at $82,000 made a solid profit around 30%, which is an excellent return. If one were to buy again during a major dip and sell when the price recovers, the potential profit would be even greater, all while maintaining a safer position than if they had bought XRP.
