Start here: connect a tool to your AI
You do not need to code. Start with one simple service that reads public information.
1. Find an MCP service
Browse one of these directories:

https://registry.modelcontextprotocol.io/Choose a remote/hosted, read-only service. Open its listing and copy the MCP server URL, not the directory’s website address.
2. Add it to your AI
Claude: Customize → Connectors → Add custom connector.
Grok:
https://grok.com/connectors → New Connector → Custom.
ChatGPT: Enable Developer mode, then create a custom MCP app.
Gemini: Settings → Connected Apps → Add a custom app, if available.
Paste the server URL there, complete any required setup, and enable the connector in your conversation.
Availability depends on your account and location. See the platform-specific instructions below.
3. Start chatting
Ask:
“Use the connected service and show me one simple thing it can do.”
Then try a question suited to that service—for example, a Bitcoin quote from a market-data tool.
Look for the tool activity in your chat to confirm it was actually used.
That is your first step into the agentic web.
Start without wallets, payments or sensitive information.

MCP for complete beginners: your first step into the agentic webMost of us already use AI to ask questions, explain things or help with research.
But there is another way to use it:
You can connect your AI to external tools and services—and then use those tools by talking normally.
You could ask it to retrieve cryptocurrency market data, search a particular research source, explore a GitHub project or work with a service you already use.
You do not need to become a programmer to start.
I would love to get 50 people from BitcoinTalk exploring this together. Some of you are technical. Others might never have heard of MCP.
That is fine. This post is for the beginners too.
First: what is MCP?
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol.
It is a standard that lets AI applications connect to external tools and data sources.
Three things to understand:
MCP server: provides the tools or information.
Claude, ChatGPT, Grok or Gemini: the AI application that can use them.
Connector or app: where you configure that connection.
MCP is not another cryptocurrency, and you do not need to buy a token to use it.
Some services are free; others require an account, an API key or payment. Your AI subscription may also affect what you can connect.
1. Choose something useful to try
Start with a task you actually understand.
For example:
Retrieve a Bitcoin market quote.
Look up information about a cryptocurrency.
Search technical documentation.
Explore a public GitHub project.
You can discover MCP services through the official MCP Registry, Smithery or other directories.
For your first experiment, look for a service described as:
Remote or hosted: no server software to install on your computer.
Read-only: retrieves information rather than changing things.
Public or no authentication: avoids API-key setup for your first attempt.
One crypto-related example to explore is Crypto.com’s public market-data MCP.
A directory listing is not a guarantee of safety. Check the provider’s own documentation and what access the service requests.
You will usually receive an MCP server URL.
Keep it for the next step.
2. Connect it to your AI
You normally add the MCP URL in the AI application’s connector or app settings—not in the chat box.
The setup differs between applications.
Claude
Open:
Customize → Connectors → “+” → Add custom connector
Enter the remote MCP server URL and complete the setup. Authenticate if the service requires it.
Then open a conversation and enable the connector through the chat’s “+” → Connectors menu.
Anthropic currently documents custom connectors for Free and paid plans. Free accounts are limited to one custom connector; organisation accounts may require administrator approval.

ChatGPT
ChatGPT uses custom apps and Developer mode.
The basic process is:
Enable Developer mode, if available on your account.
Create an app using the remote MCP server URL.
Review its tools and authentication requirements.
Select that app in your conversation.
OpenAI’s developer guide currently points to Settings → Security and login → Developer mode. Other official instructions describe an Apps → Advanced Settings route for certain accounts.
The menus and access depend on your account and workspace. If you cannot find the option, it does not necessarily mean you did something wrong.
Developer mode can expose powerful tools, so keep your first experiment read-only.

Grok
Go to:
grok.com/connectors → New Connector → Custom
Enter the MCP server URL and complete any required authentication.
Grok can then discover the server’s tools and make them available in your conversations.
For managed Business or Enterprise accounts, an administrator may need to configure the connector first.

Gemini
For eligible accounts, open Gemini on the web:
Settings → Connected Apps → Add a custom app
Enter the MCP server URL and follow the instructions.
Once connected, type @ in a conversation to select the custom app.
Important: Google currently limits this feature to users aged 18 or over in the US, using a personal Google account, with English and Keep Activity enabled.
If you do not meet those requirements, try another supported AI application rather than struggling to find a missing setting.

3. Ask a normal question
Once your chosen service is connected, you can talk normally.
For a market-data service, try:
Use the connected market-data tool to get a Bitcoin price quote. Tell me the source, currency pair and timestamp if available.
Or:
What can this connected service help me do? Give me three simple examples.
Your question needs to match the service you connected. A documentation tool will not suddenly become a live price feed.
4. Check that the tool was actually used
Look for the app’s tool activity, connector label or request for permission.
An AI saying “I used the service” is not proof on its own.
If you are unsure, ask:
Use the connected tool, not ordinary web browsing. If you cannot access it, tell me.
Also check the result. A connected tool can return incomplete, incorrect or outdated information.
A few sensible precautions
For your first experiment:
Do not connect a wallet or authorise payments.
Never paste passwords, seed phrases or private keys into the conversation.
Read permission requests before approving them.
Remember that a connected service may receive information from your request.
Disconnect anything you no longer use.
Hosted does not automatically mean safe, private or free.
And this is where it gets interesting
Your first connection might retrieve one piece of information.
Later, compatible tools can help you research a subject, compare sources, analyse public data or work across several services.
The AI becomes another way to use software—not just another place to ask questions.
That is one practical starting point for what people call the agentic web: AI systems interacting with tools and services on our behalf, within the access we give them.
You do not have to understand the whole ecosystem today.
Connect one useful service. Ask one question. See what happens.
