Lately, our eyes have been fixed on Hormuz and its chaotic state of affairs. This red herring, make us overlooked an event that might signal a more dangerous occurrence. The threat comes from a highly advanced Asian nation, Japan. With all the problems and immense demographic pressures, I'm amazed Japan hasn't suffered an economic collapse yet. After digging into a few references, I found the formula, how Japan goverment addressing demographic issues, drive its economic growth forward and maintain its status as a developed country.

How severe is the demographic problem facing Japan?
Demographic issue are real structural problems, The population decline is steady and unstoppable with population growth around -0.5% to -0.6% per year. There are two deaths in one birth. The largest proportion of elderly people in the world at 26%. Japan also face extreme population decline.

A shrinking population usually spells economic disaster because the tax base and the drivers of the economy diminish, while the elderly population adds to the burden because the number of workers supporting each retiree is becoming smaller. But Japan prove that GDP does not necessarily have to collapse just because the population declines, Japan compensate population decline by productivity, automation and participation of women/the elderly. Everything about robots, AI, automation, software, capital investment, and efficiency are becoming increasingly important.

Realized that productivity cannot compensate for demographics forever, government also implemented longterm economic interventions. Before 2024 BOJ was the largest shareholder in the Japanese market. BOJ offering 0% interest or even applying negative interest rates for decades. Cheap money does not automatically create demand, older people who are pessimistic about the future still prefer to save money.  But hedge funds and investment giants are interested in this, viewing it as a sea of money. Buy yen, convert it to dollars, then invest in US tech or high yield stocks and gold. We call it Yen carry trade practice which has endured, become a favorite, and even created a dependency, because considered as an investment guaranteed to yield a profit.

What serves as a warning sign and requires vigilance is feedback loop when the yen strengthens such as the global economic turmoil of 2024. More intersting today I think Japan shifting from financial repression with ultra low rates toward normalization of iterest and i think it is dangerouse transition because  the world has grown accustomed to the yen as a source of cheap funding. But when yen is expensive then the effect spreads to USD, Us treasury, qwuities, emerging market, crypto world or global liquidity. Disorderly unwind can forced liquidation which bring global stock markets crash.

Beside that debt to GDP ratio Japan 203% GDP for 2026 quite concerning if corelated to interset expense, substantial debt with 0% interest relatively easy to manage but when interest 1,25% and if there are requirement to refinance existing mature government bond then debt service spiral mode will be activated.

Even now yen carry trade still viable because its big spread with USD, when do you think the risk of the yen carry trade shifts from a normal unwind to a potential global liquidity event, and what signals should we watch for?
Will there be a wave of Bitcoin selling as a result of deleveraging?

These are no issues with a shrinking population, those are false economic ideas that come from a time before technology was this developed. In that time this meant a decline of everything since you could not replace humans like you can now. We have enough humans that it is hard to build infrastructure, housing and everything from them. A shrinking population should be seen as something good if it stabilizes after some period, and it should only be seen as something bad if it does not continue to stop. Maybe any kind of intervention in this process is going to make things even worse in some way. The reason why people are not having kids is because everything is too expensive. Getting a house or apartment costs a lot, and if you rent it costs a big percentage of your salary. Also it takes a huge amount of money to raise a child until they are 18. I think I remember seeing some picture that compares the cost per countries, but it is high everywhere. This is what needs to be worked on and fixed, then demographics will start to balance itself on their own. For missing workforce issues, automation should be used everywhere where it is possible and workers should receive education to get transferred into areas where automation is not possible or very hard.

Even now yen carry trade still viable because its big spread with USD, when do you think the risk of the yen carry trade shifts from a normal unwind to a potential global liquidity event, and what signals should we watch for?
Will there be a wave of Bitcoin selling as a result of deleveraging?
It can have some impact on Bitcoin, but we should be careful before making any specific claims or judgements. What impact this will have will depend a lot on how the deleveraging happens in the end, but nobody can say this in advance. If the deleveraging is more gradual and orderly then the effect will be limited, but if it is hurried and chaotic then the effect can be significant but I would not except like a bear market. It would maybe just make a bear market worse or weaken a bull market, depends in which one we are when this happens.

How long can Japan sustain itself while grappling with demographic and debt issues?
Debt is the biggest issue, countries need to work on reducing the debt to GDP ratio.

Debt is the biggest issue, countries need to work on reducing the debt to GDP ratio.

Matter of fact as my explanation, Japan has successfully addressed most of the problems associated with population decline through technology and workforce mobilization. Japan problem not only population decline but its demography composition,  productive age population is quite small compared to the number of people which required to be taken care of or supported by income transfers, healthcare, pensions, and care. Added to this, the fertility rate increases the pressure even further and japan still can not fix it. Can you imagine economic condition with this demographic cycle within 20-30 years. How can government intervere or give monetary stimulus that can create 20 years of human development in a year caused by number of new worker decline. Especially for health care, elderly care, child and baby care, social worker which in Japan as emergency needed. What level of productivity must Japan achieve ? plus as you said about debt pressure with i think an amplifier the government choice to finances and adapts to its demographics and its altering Japan's fiscal structure and capital flows, which could subsequently impact the global financial system.

It feels like there is a lot of doom in the horizon and many possible sources of a big crash. I wouldn't say that anything you've described here is "new" and has been well known about the country for decades. The bigger problem is that it felt like they were emerging from a long stretch or stagflation/deflation but they're being hit by inflation now like everyone else in the world. They've started selling their vast reserves of US debt and it's causing a spiral. However the AI bubble seems like a equally dangerous threat - vast amounts of wealth concentrated in just a few companies all pumped up about the latest tech, where have we heard that before? The coming oil crisis might just be the spark that lights the fire. All started by the worst presidents ever, namely Trump and Putin.

I have never seen population decline as a major problem. I see it as just another piece of propaganda people like Elon Musk spread, just as they try to make people's differences a major issue. I can see what the endgame is with the race and ethnicity divide, but I honestly can't see what they stand to gain from spreading FUD about population decline.
Personally, I don't even like a high birth rate. I feel like there are more poor people in countries, so the birth rate should be reduced because poor people should have fewer children.
With the economic situation getting worse, fewer children should be born, especially by people who are most affected by the declining economy.

If you talk about productivity overall then it does not help with this topic, because you are bringing up very specific problems to which we must provide very specific solutions. If you talk about worker decline and care work in particular there are two main ways to address it. One is by lifting the age to retirement or also providing options for the elderly to get employed properly if they want to, and encourage it by making it very cheap for businesses where it could be a good thing. The other is robots and advancement in human robots. Some people that are against new technologies try to make it a big deal that if robots take care of people that it would be cold or something weird, but it does not have to be. First we can focus robots on all work that does not deal directly with humans, and all the remaining humans can be encouraged to retrain for direct human contact work. Only if there is a shortage after these measures, we can also work on introducing robots directly.

I don't even mind robots at all, because there is no problem with that if you go into it deeply. What is wrong with a robot nurse? The issue would only be for me if the elderly does not have any kind of human contact, but if we talk about places like elderly homes they are in contact with each other and friends. So there is no big deal if a lot of the staff is robotic because they have a lot of human contact.

It is risky to carry trade in yen. But we should be careful in assuming that its unwinding is going to create a global financial shock. The main problem and danger about this is speed of the unwind and how much leverage is involved in it. The interest rate gap with us narrow quickly and investors who are highly leveraged start closing positions at the similar time they may be forced to sell their bonds, stocks and emerging market assets, even also to Bitcoin, to raise cash. Something similar happened during the August 2024 market turmoil. A stronger yen and changing expectations for the exchange rate contributed to the sell off market.  The demographics and high debt rate of Japan are a serious long term challenge. But automation, workforce participation and productivity can help delay the impact

It is alarming and hard to know exactly how it will unwind but the obvious outcome is lower value in currency.  Not just YEN but probably world wide  in an effort to avoid a deflationary event, a default or similar its probably going to have multiple central banks all devaluing to avoid this harsh and disruptive break in markets.

Japan owns over a trillion in US treasury debt, it would seem obvious they sell this asset and bring the money home.  Apparently this is being avoided and some have equated those measures to a form of QE.
However clever the ideas expanded are I just assume we the people lose value in any savings, wages or personal purchasing power; basically more inflation.

I do think that the 1.25% interest is still fine, unless BOJ raises it to 1.5% or even to 2%, it's starting to get dire because how leveraged people are, in my opinion the reason people are so careful with the carry trade risk is because they're too used with cheap money and they're not familiar with narrower gap even though I also know that this interest could cause debt servicing spiral for the japanese government.

Sadly they're not doing it good enough. Missed the semi conductor craze and fumbled bad in the NAND flash industry, it could boost their economy massively and helped them create economic cushion, too bad.
They also don't perform as great in software industry, unless they could attract foreign talent, it's going to be hard for them, but everybody is going to the U.S. with a good wage so there's that.

I'm amazed Japan hasn't suffered an economic collapse yet.
Collapses are extremely rare so it is not surprising that it has not yet "collapsed". But it has been on a downward spiral where the Japanese economy continues degrading. Occupied Japan was not supposed to be economically strong ever. They were supposed to be a capitulated state that becomes a cow that the US milks dry. It's clear from the way they accepted the Plaza Accord and shot themselves in the foot all the way to today when they are the biggest bag holders of the US debt keeping the US economy aka a Ponzi scheme afloat.

Quote
population decline
participation of women/the elderly.
government ... economic interventions.
0% interest or even applying negative interest rates
debt to GDP ratio Japan 203% GDP for 2026
All I'm seeing is collapse! Not a sudden one but a slow deterioration of the economy.
And considering Japan is an importer of energy and natural resources, their economy will continue suffering a lot more as energy prices keep rising and global supply chain is disrupted by the US regime.

Quote
Even now yen carry trade still viable because its big spread with USD, when do you think the risk of the yen carry trade shifts from a normal unwind to a potential global liquidity event, and what signals should we watch for?
Will there be a wave of Bitcoin selling as a result of deleveraging?
How long can Japan sustain itself while grappling with demographic and debt issues?
I don't think the fallout is going to be that large to have a major global impact. The first impact is going to be seen in the US economy (since as I said occupied Japan is a cash cow for them) and if it brings dollar "collapse" then there will be global disruption proportional to how much each country has not dedollarised. But at the same time USD collapse would shoot price of certain things up to the moon, one of which is going to be bitcoin.
