Why this post

A hashrate number is easy to compare. The harder part is deciding whether an Equihash ASIC can actually run safely at a home workshop or small farm. This checklist uses the Antminer Z15 and Z15 Pro as a worked example, but the same process applies to other Equihash machines.

1. Start with the algorithm and the load

The Z15 series mines Equihash coins such as Zcash (ZEC) and Horizen (ZEN). The original Z15 is rated at 420 KSol/s and 1,510 W. The Z15 Pro doubles the nominal hashrate to 840 KSol/s while drawing 2,780 W.

That changes the efficiency from about 3.60 J/KSol to about 3.31 J/KSol. It is a useful improvement, but it does not remove the electrical and cooling requirements.

2. Check the circuit before buying the miner

The Z15 Pro specification calls for 200-240 V AC. At the nameplate power:

  • 2,780 W / 220 V = about 12.6 A
  • 2,780 W / 240 V = about 11.6 A
  • Daily energy use at full load = 66.72 kWh

Do not plan this machine around a standard 110/120 V household outlet. A dedicated 220-240 V branch circuit is the practical starting point. The breaker, wire gauge, receptacle and PDU still need to match local electrical code, so an electrician should confirm the final installation.

The miner has two AC inputs. Bitmain specifies a maximum of 10 A per wire, and the product is normally supplied without power cords. Both inputs need to be powered correctly before startup.

3. Treat the electrical load as heat

Nearly all input power becomes room heat. Using 1 W = 3.412 BTU/hr, a 2,780 W unit produces roughly 9,486 BTU/hr.

That is more useful for planning than a vague statement that the miner “runs hot.” A small room needs a clear intake path and a separate exhaust path. Recirculating the exhaust back into the intake raises inlet temperature quickly and makes fan speed and noise worse.

Bitmain lists a 0-40°C operating range for the Z15 Pro. I would not design a room to sit near the upper limit. Leave margin for hot weather, filter restriction and fan aging.

4. Noise is a site constraint, not a minor detail

Bitmain's fan data for this model lists about 75 dBA at 25°C with the fans at maximum speed. Actual sound at the property boundary depends on distance, walls, ducts and fan speed, but this is not normal office or living-room equipment.

For a residential site, check the machine room, exhaust outlet and neighboring rooms before assuming an enclosure will solve the problem. Restrictive silencers can reduce airflow, so temperature should be monitored after every duct or enclosure change.

5. Separate hardware performance from profitability

A miner can meet its hashrate target and still be uneconomic. Before deployment, calculate with the local electricity price and current Equihash network conditions. Third-party tools such as WhatToMine or minerstat are useful for checking live difficulty and coin revenue assumptions.

Quick pre-start checklist

  • Dedicated 200-240 V circuit verified for continuous load

  • Expected heat load included in ventilation planning
