Can we have a general thread

So I was on the forum yesterday and I saw some started a very helpful thread on the beginners and help board it was about a certain scam, it was very interesting and revealing when I was reading I was about to send my post when I was stopped that someone has just dropped a reply I checked it was the moderator telling the OP to take the thread to the pinned general thread

This thread is for scam, and other useful information and truthfully i went through that thread and it is a smart idea to have such type of discussion in one thread you will not miss such useful information.

Bringing it back to our local board in a day we can have like three or more scam, fraud, exchange issues and or useful thread all started some are even almost similar, I think it will be helpful for us to have a pinned general thread where those thread can be made.

Those are really good topics and I usually lock the duplicate ones. What we need is a trading/Altcoin sub board to move those discussion into a more convenient space to free up the main board.

The request is a work in progress....

Having a separate thread for each scam and hackers works is better. Why having all of them on a single thread when having it in different threads does not affect posting qualities on the board?

Many people do not like the idea on the beginners and help board. You did not read about that.

Maybe there will be a time each boards will have unnecessary megathreads.

What some people complained about are repetitive topics but the topics that you are saying are not part of them.

This is a local board though  and I do agree with PostQuantumBTC regarding that aspect. Single thread doesn't  work, let there be separate threads for each and every scam , hacks , exchange awareness or whatever. There can be a single thread that's combining the links with a good description though,  I think that's much better than having what you proposed.

 The major problem is repetitive thread but I guess Igebotz is not really strict in that aspect because it can make the LB page go dry. If he were to take strict action most thread on the first page will be moved to off-topic or locked.  I believe Nigerians can do better though, bump old threads if you need to post something similar instead of creating a new thread. No one will really question it, LB is meant to be flexible.

I don't think the general thread stuff would work well, sometimes they derail so much from purpose and is very difficult to keep up with. I think that we need an updates/info sub board as well where people would post their exchanges updates, as well as post recent scams, hacks and other updates that people should benefit from. I'm no fan of general thread, even if it's stickied, information in it appears hidden and people are hardly inclined to visit it from time to time.

The scam awareness posts are not coming very often, so I don’t see how they are littering the main board to warrant having a separate thread for it. We have the search button, anyone who’s interested in reading about scam related topics should use the search feature and look for such topics.

Okay make we reason am like this, if we create a particular thread for scam issues or updates to be posted there and later again we still talk say make all bitcoin investment things be posted on a particular thread and then later again we come out con say all trading things should be posted on a particular board how this local board go con be.

Abeg any information or something way them never post before just post am na why them create this boards them, make we no con Dey do over sabi con make the local board a board way them Dey only post for MEGA THREAD.

The thread I mean could be something like this but since you made this today I think I have seen someone who made a compilation so it older that yours but this is what it could look like or the moderator could make the post and pin it also the thread should not be locked and discussion on these topics made there, with the rate at which we make similar scam post will reduce if its on one thread, yes some people wants the refreshments of starting a new thread but this is better than any other suggestions.

So far we have about 8 threads pinned on this board. I think that's enough unless we want to see the first page on this board full of pin threads. There's this thread Useful information for Nigerian newbies. It's pinned already and from its name it can be useful for what you're proposing. Every information that's useful, it can be about forum or off forum, scam or whatever should be posted on that thread if mega thread for helpful discussion is what you're after.

The problem with a single thread for such similar discussion is that people can easily missed relevant information. Normally, people suppose to check pin threads when they visit the board. Newbies should check it to know more about the local rules and the older members should check for new posts and changes in the local board. It's easier for the older members to keep track of the discussions but where newbies can start from? Assuming you have a scam discussion thread with over 50 pages, I don't know how long it will take them to go through or how easy for them to spot the relevant scam discussion and how to avoid them.

Scam discussion is not something to hide from public. It's something that we need to create awareness about the moment they surface so people can stay vigilant. After two or three days, the moderator should lock the topic. If we should dump them on a single thread, trust me people might easily missed them or it can get buried with discussions. If we proposed the thread should be locked, that's not ideal to me because people can not share their experience about the scam in discussion.

It's a very good idea, but let's not forget that this is a Nigerian local board where everyone wants to create their own separate threads, even though many other discussions with the same content but different topics already exist.

The truth is that I like the idea, but at the same time the MOD will also have a lot of work to do. Imagine a situation whereby only one dedicated thread for posting scams, hacks, and so on, but different users don't keep to those rules because they want to create their own thread separately so it will be seen so that they can get merit/s through it; the mod will keep locking and deleting nonstop.

Second, let's use the beginners and help board for an instance: day by day, new users keep signing up on Bitcointalk, and the majority of them go straight to creating threads about signing up and asking questions that are already answered and pinned on the board.
So what I'm trying to say here is that, even though it's possible, for now it will be a bit difficult because Nigerians want where they will be seen. Using one thread for such an important and sensitive discussion will hide a lot of information because there will be many other comments.

This doesn't look like it's going to reduce the number of threads in anyway, infact it will have increased it by one, I think what we should be pushing for is a way to reduce duplicate threads, on a surface level you idea might make sense but then how often can you update it, a thread for something might have already existed but because it's not there on your thread someone else can assume no thread has been created for it yet and create their own, at that point instead of reducing duplicate threads you will have unintentionally fostered it.

The thread wasn't for moderation of post so I don't see how you think it should reduce the number of threads that other members decides to post even if it has being discussed already. Well, that's why we have our moderator and anyone can always report a duplicated post to the mod and he gets it nuked. But in as much as the post is seen as relevant to exist for discussion I will always add them to my list in that post.

I think there are boards with even more than 8 pinned threads as long as it's seen to be important to have it pinned for visibility base on the purpose it provides. And having it locked was to prevent unrequited discussions because it wasn't created for discussions but as a thread where anyone can check in and find many scam related discussions s that may be relevant to their knowledge.

Realistically people will barely visit old scam threads but regardless of that it's still important to have something like a thread with a record of all of them from reference purposes... permit me to call it an archive just for this particular case though.

Nevertheless like I always emphasize the most important thing in this kinda threads is organising these posts not just listing them out and secondly constantly updating it. The influx of scam threads will never end so you should expect updates from time to time also else it will quickly become obsolete.

I saw the thread you created, nice initiative to gather all in one, however, how many users, before creating a new thread, will research similar scam created topics already existing before creating new ones? The problem is that users are not able to dig up old posts, the purpose of the thread might not actually be met, and soon the thread will sink into old pages, probably forgotten.

The moderator have been doing an excellent job in sorting out threads and locking similar ones with link to the original thread which I believe is with for now if you ask me and I also believe our local board is still pretty new and we should take things easy as I definitely believe we would achieve all of these things and have a more organized local board and so far our local board is doing very fine with the help of the moderator and his perfect moderation.

We can have a list compiling all of them just like what Lida has created, but we can’t also ignore the fact that new topics, especially about scam warnings, also get more exposure when they are newly created and can get to the audience faster. That way, only a few people actually go to the old thread to see which is new, like Mia also outlined.

I will prefer a situation where we can have such a list at the same time. We can have all the new scam and security warning threads created, but it should be locked after a few pages to reduce the spamming while still being quoted or listed on a generally made thread for scam-related threads.
