Does it mean that developers control Bitcoin? If yes, How we call it as decentralized?
That we have a number of developers, miners and other Bitcoin cypherpunks does not change anything than to see Bitcoin being aligned to the network protocol, none of them could do anything outside the contacts at which the Bitcoin network is being designed to operate, all these medics difficult for 51% attack to be possible because the hashrate distribution is globally and nothing is made centralized regarding the use of Bitcoin network. It's the users and those who run nodes that actually have the most power to dictate which software to stick to or forbid and developers can do nothing about it even if they are responsible for writing the codes. That's why Bitcoin remains decentralized because no single developer or government or cypherpunks can just wake up one day and decide every Bitcoiner should switch to a new software or enforce an update that is perceived to be bad.

Bitcoin has no CEO or formal central authority. But software development inevitably involves people who have more influence than ordinary users. Bitcoin core is extremely important because the software determines which blocks and transactions a node considers valid. Bitcoin.org itself says users running Bitcoin core independently enforce the rules. And the Bitcoin developer documentation explicitly acknowledges that Bitcoin's security depends on the behavior of software maintaining consensus.
Does it mean that developers control Bitcoin? If yes, How we call it as decentralized?
Not at all, because while it's true that developers can create new features, they still can't control Bitcoin. Because every change to Bitcoin must be mutually agreed upon, both by developers and miners. So, in essence, Bitcoin remains decentralized and will not become centralized. Because, essentially, developers are simply maintaining the Bitcoin system's integrity and decentralization. So, I think your assumption that Bitcoin isn't decentralized is clearly incorrect. Bitcoin will remain decentralized, as there's no central authority that can unilaterally regulate Bitcoin. Therefore, all decisions must be negotiated collectively, and that's why Bitcoin will remain a secure asset. Although there are rumors that quantum computers will threaten Bitcoin, I'm confident that the great Bitcoin developers will find ways to anticipate that. So,, I hope Bitcoin developers stay healthy, because they truly contribute to maintaining the security of the Bitcoin network. Also, please correct me if my assumption is wrong.

Node runner is the enforcer and they are free to run what kind of software they wanna run, it's consensus, just because you developed something doesn't mean it'll get adopted automatically.
You have stated that "Bitcoin's security depends on the behavior of software maintaining consensus." and it's exactly that, it depends on software maintaining consensus, you've actually answered the question yourself.
Developer develops, node runner vote. In simple layman terms.

People can run many different Bitcoin wallet softwares for their Bitcoin nodes and Bitcoin node distribution is decentralized too. There are more information about Bitcoin node distribution from https://bitnodes.io/The site was off a while but it was back. From your OP (above), you've clearly highlighted the division of responsibilities, which includes: - Node runners - Consensus - developers. Node runners: This part is responsible for transaction verification and record keeping. They may include any single individual—including you—who has a good working system with enough storage, and an Internet connection. Consensus: This is an automated system that determines how a transactions is approved. It includes a set of rules that the whole system follows to approve, verify, and store a transaction. This part includes the following: - Miners: they pick up pending transactions from the mempool and group them into blocks using high computing power, earning rewards based on first come basis—it's basically a competition of computing power out there (proof-of-work). - Nodes: they verify the sorted out transactions as valid—ensuring no double spending—and eventually keeps a record of them. Developers: this is the last part of your OP. They actually propose new rules that can be implemented by the system above (nodes and miners). Lemme explain further. When a new rule is proposed, it is sent to the Bitcoin devs, the whole Bitcoin dev community look into the proposal, and either accept or reject it. If accepted, they implement the code in Bitcoin core, the code will be triggered by a condition—normally, an "if" statement (the newly implemented code is usually strictly applied, in that, the previous rules are also wired in the new implementation)—although, sometimes there could be a hard fork. After this process, it is left for the miners and node runners to download this new version and trigger it. If the community doesn't like the new implementation, they can simply ignore the trigger condition and continue with the previous rule. No one arm can dictate the eventual rules to apply without a general and synchronous agreement—you can't enforce a rule, or make changes independently. This is why the protocol is actually decentralized despite devs being the ones that write the rules into the code base. Let's walk down history lane. Gavin Andresen was one of the core developers of Bitcoin who worked closely with Satoshi. Satoshi even said He has left things in the good hands of Gavin and everyone in a private email to Mike Hearn which was later made public—these are historical facts you can easily find anywhere. The above statement is to show how influential Gavin was in the Bitcoin project—you can Google or wiki him to know more. Yet, when he proposed BIP101 to increase the block size of transaction from 1mb - 8mb, it was rejected. He had to go create his own coin. Even when a similar proposal was made by miners and some devs in 2016, it was shut down using UASF (Users-Activated Soft Fork): this activated segwit based on nodes influence. ( source) The brief history above shows how dev—even though very influential, and can write and propose new rules—cannot enforce these rules and have centralization of authority over the network.

Developers don't control Bitcoin, if they have got a good idea then they can purpose that idea but if such idea is rejected by the nodes and miners or the community then they won't be able to add it to the core. The nodes play very important role here because they're the ones who run the core and if somehow developers decide to add something to core and the nodes don't like it then they can refuse it without any pressure. Developers on their own have no authority to add anything to Bitcoin, even if they add something and it's not approved by the nodes then it won't be part of Bitcoin because nodes will refuse it and they'll keep their old core version where such thing wasn't added. That's why Bitcoin is fully decentralized not controlled by anyone not even by the developers.

There are developers, miners, node operators and users that make sure the Bitcoin ecosystem is running, but that does not mean total control or centralization. You could say that they manage the Bitcoin ecosystem without a direct control over it. Developers write the software and could write certain changes to Bitcoin core but that would not pass if the nodes and users are against it, that shows that it's not run by a central authority but collective contribution of all parties mentioned.

The reason Bitcoin is said to be decentralized is not without reason, it's because it's supported by the community, nodes, and miners around the world, rather than being controlled by a central authority.. even though the core developers' job is to design and maintain the source code, they still can't control Bitcoin.. at most, they can only release code updates in the repository, but the final decision is still in the hands of nodes and miners who decide whether to run it or not.. if not enough of them run it, in the end that code won't be widely adopted and could eventually be ignored by the network because not enough nodes and miners would be willing to adopt it.

Devs write code, they don't control what people run. Core has no auto-update, so if they pushed something shady nobody would be forced to install it.
The blocksize war is the best example where big companies and miners backed SegWit2x (New York Agreement), and it still died because the economic majority refused to go along. Decentralized doesn't mean nobody has a louder voice, it means nobody can force the rules on you.

There are many failed Bitcoin forks, not only Segwit2x. People are free to make forks from Bitcoin but their forks will fail and die. How Many Bitcoin Forks Are There? You will be surprised!!!Bitcoin fork history: every major fork and what happened to it. The following table is taken from this article. | Year | Fork | What it changed | Outcome | | 2010 | Value overflow fix | Emergency rule tightening after a bug minted 184 billion BTC | Bad chain abandoned within hours; the fake coins erased | | 2013 | Accidental split (v0. | A database limit put nodes on two chains | Pools downgraded; network reunited in hours | | 2015-16 | Bitcoin XT, Classic, Unlimited | Rival node software pushing bigger blocks | Never won consensus; faded without a lasting split | | 2017 | SegWit (BIP141) | Soft fork adding block weight and fixing malleability | Activated August 2017; standard today | | 2017 | Bitcoin Cash (BCH) | Hard fork raising the block size to 8MB | Chain survives; down over 98% against BTC from its peak | | 2017 | SegWit2x | Proposed 2MB hard fork bolted onto SegWit | Cancelled in November 2017 for lack of consensus | | 2017 | Bitcoin Gold (BTG) | Hard fork switching mining to GPUs (Equihash) | Hit by 51% attacks in 2018 and 2020; down over 99% against BTC | | 2018 | Bitcoin SV (BSV) | Fork of Bitcoin Cash chasing vast blocks | Widely delisted; down over 98% against BTC | | 2021 | Taproot (BIPs 340, 341, 342) | Soft fork adding Schnorr signatures and Tapscript | Activated November 2021; Bitcoin's most recent consensus change |

There is no such thing as a perfect system so obviously we don't have a perfectly decentralized Bitcoin either but Bitcoin is still decentralized and as others have already told you, being decentralized means nobody can force you to run anything. You can choose any consensus rules that you want and if the majority of the network run the same thing as you, then that is The Bitcoin. In Bitcoin we only have small traces of centralization and that's normal and there is not much we can do about it. Like for example hashrate being concentrated in one jurisdiction (eg. CEX.io's GHash.io pool gained >51% hashrate in 2014). These incidents aren't changing the fact that Bitcoin is still decentralized.

Bitcoin.org itself says users running Bitcoin core independently enforce the rules. And the Bitcoin developer documentation explicitly acknowledges that Bitcoin's security depends on the behavior of software maintaining consensus.
Nodes must reach consensus to maintain a unified blockchain, it's worth noting that each full node enforces rules locally and independently. Consensus happens because thousands of independent nodes choose to run software with the exact same validation rules. If for any reason a malicious miner creates an invalid block, every individual node will reject it on its own without needing a central coordinator. Does it mean that developers control Bitcoin? If yes, How we call it as decentralized?
Developers do not control Bitcoin. While they write and propose updates to the code, they cannot force anyone to run it. Bitcoin is decentralized because rule changes require voluntary adoption by the node operators, miners, and users running the network. If developers push a change people dislike, users simply refuse to update

Here we go again with another "Bitcoin isn't decentralized" forum post. I don't mind newbies asking newbie question(this is part of learning), but the internet is already full of information about the subject. Is it really that hard to just find that info and read, instead of making another generic forum thread? Define what you mean by "control", when you say that the developers "control" Bitcoin? Are you suggesting that the developers can block and reverse BTC transactions on the blockchain? Are you suggesting that the developers could gather tomorrow and decide "hey, let's change the block rewards or lets increase the total amount of BTC, that can be mined"? Do you have any proposals, that could make Bitcoin actually decentralized?

Starting tomorrow, if a developer writes code that says that if someone has 1 BTC, they have to pay a 10% service charge, they can write the code that way, but if other nodes don't accept that rule, then their node alone won't be able to change the rules of Bitcoin. The other nodes will say, "We don't follow this rule." As a result, they won't be in consensus with the rest of the software/network. In short, the developer has the power to influence or propose and can write code accordingly, but ultimately the other participants in the network have to accept that change, otherwise the block will be invalid.

Bitcoin Core developers can add new features to Bitcoin Core, but they do not have the power to change Bitcoin's policy or rules regulation. Even if they stop releasing new versions of Bitcoin Core, the full Bitcoin system will continue to operate. And this is why Bitcoin can be called decentralized, where no rules or policies are changed by any central authority.
Bitcoin regulation has positive aspects of fixed supply, decentralization, and security, thats why Bitcoin popularity is increasing. Hypothetically, if Bitcoin ever becomes centralized, then Bitcoin will not exist. The strong trust that people have built in Bitcoin will be destroyed.

What happened with the last Bitcoin fork should be enough for those who don't understand alot about Bitcoin nodes and proposals, if you have a better improvement in mind for Bitcoin and act of voting will still be needed to carry out, the last fork showed that, where many people was against it.
Everyone is free to run their own Nodes in their basements, developers do not control Bitcoin, if what you want is the Core developers to stay out of Bitcoin completely you aren't getting that, they have influence over Bitcoin and this doesn't mean controlling Bitcoin, the decentralisation that's missing is how you OP decides to use your Bitcoin.
Tell me, since you have been buying and holding Bitcoin have you been using it in a decentralised way? Have you not pass KYC on my online exchanges to buy Bitcoin? Have you not moved your Bitcoin into a custodial account or wallet? This is what you should be looking into, leave the nodes and the core team alone, simple DYOR will guide you right on that, Bitcoin remains decentralised.

I think the important distinction here is influence vs control. Developers can propose and build changes, but they can't force every node to accept them. In the end, users and node operators decide what software and rules they run. That's a pretty important part of why Bitcoin can have active developers without having a central authority.

And the Bitcoin developer documentation explicitly acknowledges that Bitcoin's security depends on the behavior of software maintaining consensus.
Does it mean that developers control Bitcoin? If yes, How we call it as decentralized?
Everyone is involved in the decision let's say for a hard or soft ware. Developers is one, then we have the miners, those that run the node. So every stake holders is involved, which means that there are no central figure that will dictate what BIP is going to be implemented. Just like what happened recently, in BIP-110.

If Bitcoin core devs control Bitcoin, it would mean decentralization is not suitable for Bitcoin, since core devs have such strong influence over Bitcoin. But the reason Bitcoin is called decentralized is because of consesus, as explained by other users here. It's true that Bitcoin core devs play a crucial role, but all decisions still depend on consensus. No matter what the core devs do, if the majority of the consensus disagrees, then whatever they add or change rests with the consensus. That's why Bitcoin is called decentralized because consensus has the most say.

Yea, Bitcoin has key participants that have major influence over the Bitcoin network, however it is interesting to note that none of these individual participants have control over the network when there is no concensus reached. Every participant in the Bitcoin ecosystem is important, none is more important than the other, that is why the developers can propose rules and it will be rejected by the miners or users of bitcoin and when the miners produce an invalid block, it will also be rejected by the nodes. No single entity can alter Bitcoin's settings or impose changes on the other key participants. This is what makes Bitcoin decentralized.
