DEXs have gotten a lot better over the past few years. Aggregators, cheaper L2s and better wallets have made swapping onchain much easier than it used to be. But mainstream adoption still feels slower than a lot of people expected.
From what I've seen, a few things keep holding people back. New users still get confused by seed phrases, gas fees, token approvals and switching networks. MEV and sandwich attacks make trading feel unfair, especially on bigger swaps. Liquidity is spread across so many chains that the same pair can be deep on one and thin on another. Exploits and bridge hacks keep making the news, which doesn't help trust. And some front-ends are now geo-blocked or under regulatory pressure.
Which of these do you think is the biggest problem, and which one gets fixed first? And if one of them were solved tomorrow, do you think DEX volume would actually grow a lot, or would people keep doing what they already do?
Vote in the poll and let me know what you think.

Define "DEXs".
There are futures DEX and nothing really holds them back as Hyperliquid, for example, closely competes with the industry leaders, and some others are about to join them.
If you're talking about AMM and other spot DEX, then it's probably the liquidity fragmentation across many blockchains. Some of them allow interchain swaps routing them through bridges and interchain messaging protocols but that's usually awful UX, not suitable for trading at all. Portfolio rebalancing - maybe. Trading - no.

I still can't phantom on the fact that people prefer using centralized exchange to a decentralized exchange in cryptocurrency, despite knowing the risk associated to using a centralized exchange. If we are going by the way of satoshi expectation over every user of Bitcoin, we are to go decentralized and avoid the use of any centralized exchange that may render our personal information unsafe, despite the rate at which so many centralized exchange of scammed people and went bankrupt, some people still prefer to use them rather than a decentralized exchange.

I wish I can chose more than one answer because more than one of those options fits into the challenge holding DEX. Two of the major ones are slippage and security breaches. A lot of scams have been executed through smart contract hacks and through slippage and that scares a lot of people from using DEX. Another point which you did not add there is the proliferation of shitcoins and scam project in DEX. This is the main reason I'm scared of using some DEX.

For DEXs to reach the mainstream adoption, I think several of this issues needs to improve together. easier wallet, better security, deeper liquidity across chains, lower costs, and a smother trading experience. Once using a DEX feels almost as simple as using a normal exchange, that’s when I think we’ll see a much bigger shift in user behavior.

I don't think it's liquidity because there was a time DEX were pulling numbers bigger than 99% of CEX. I don't think it's popularity at first because of the same reason, I don't think it's because of the risk of hacks or any of those things because CEX had them worst. What I think chase people away from DEX is because of Poor UX/wallet complexity. The ball was in the court for DEX's to take over as they were dominating everywhere but poor user interface and the stress they brought made traders to ignore them and went on to patronize CEX that made things easier for them. We're in a time that people don't want to stress things out so why wasn't money spent well on good display and designs for the DEX by the developers? Is because they don't care. Everything was just anyhow and all this contributed to people leaving. Only few stayed behind and tight now DEX are finding it hard to get back their groove. There was a time when if you aren't using DEX then you aren't in crypto and if only the companies leading then prioritize improving on the existing projects instead of launching new ones everyday then maybe things could had been different now.

When funds are deployed in a haphazard manner, they become one of the reasons why centralized exchanges remain dominant over DEX. So for DEX to gain ground, onboarding should be as simple as possible, prices and trade execution should be better having fixed MEV and without sandwich attacks, liquidity shouldn't be fragmented but concentrated and exploits and bridge hacks need to be eliminated at all cost. This is the only way DEX can become most preferred and competitive for crypto native users over CEX in coming years if not right from now, even though CEX may still co-exist because of the convenience it provides, because of fiat integration and institutional custody.

MEV is biggest problem, you can't expect people to use DEX if you aren't certain what the output of swap you're going to get, the horror stories about MEV taking 99% of the swap output is enough to scare people off even though MEV protection exists, huge slippage is a problem too, making it very inefficient for people who are moving big capitals.
In the order, they should solve MEV and DEX security first, nobody want to get frontrunned and nobody want to see their wallet got hacked through spending approval, solve these and DEX will have better volume. Then maybe find a way to reduce the slippage.

The constant exploits on them is I think the biggest problem. We all like to use DEXs but with the news of getting hacked means that people should avoid the most of it. If they are to prove that they have a tighter security, traders will go there and will contribute to increase the volume. But no, there's more security IMO that everyone think with the cexs. While there are still some dexs which are good and not the same with the ones that were exploited. I think that there's still hope for it to have a bigger volume in the next coming years.

The way I see it, CEX offers more convenience than DEX. People like things that are easy to use and all in one place, and CEX offers that. They can trade there and also trade with P2P without leaving the app. It's easy. People like easy. That is why the idea of self custody is not very popular. I think that is the biggest reason. Not to mention that we have been used to centralized things all our lives. If decentralization was what we grew up on, moving to a centralized system would have been a challenge, but now, it is decentralization that is the challenge. These are the two reasons I think are preventing the growth of DEX.

The actual fact is that people like to be in a situation whereby they knows who to point their fingers at, if things goes wrong, and since decentralized exchange doesn't always have a user friendly interface, centralized exchange always seems like the better option while in reality it is not. Anything that has an advantage will surely have it own disadvantage, but I believe that the biggest challenge of decentralized exchange over the years is lack of liquidity, because if they can fix that to matches the liquidity of Centralized exchange, more users, especially those that crave privacy would rather make use of dex exchange than the one of cex.

Although there are DEX protocols with MEV protection nowadays, you can always just set maximum allowed slippage at where you're comfortable. This feature is available literally everywhere. You may have your transaction failed but at least you know you'll never get filled below the price you've set.

DEXes have gathered over the years since they came out waaay too much bad reputation for anyone to actually trust them. Or at least the new ones. So reputation is a big problem. Hacks are a real concern too, but they can happen to any online business. We just do not trust the devs behind DEX because the code might as well by some random guy with AI.

I would add UX is also a problem from the list you mentioned. But it gets complicated when newbies have to switch between different networks, many even lost funds when switching networks, then gas and approvals, then the fear of losing funds just because you approved a transaction or signed a message a year or month ago that did nothing, but after waiting so long the hacker exploited it and hacked your wallet.
DEXs are not facing this problem just in 2026, they have not been adopted for this reason for a long time now bro.
2026 is not easy on DeFi and DEXs as well, every day is a day of a new hack, bridges are losing funds, people who locked their funds in some pool also lost due to some vulnerability although for some time these attacks have reduced, like since the Coldcard hack happened, but before that every day was a hack day, or at least every 3rd day maybe haha.

I can relate to poor UI/UX / wallet compatibility. But I think this is the downside, or the thing we are giving away, because again, it's decentralized and it does not fully have access to your wallet, even if you have already approved some permissions. Another thing is that fixing MEV or nicer wallets will help people who already use DEXs. For me that alone won't suddenly move big CEX volume over. Habit + off-ramp + "support if I mess up" is still the moat.

Surely it's the hacks holding DEXs back, first half of 2026 has seen 39% TVL falls after the hacks hence why it's a disaster, UX complexity was never an excuse, it's easier than tradfi actually. MEV is not a problem anymore after every DEXs already MEV protection capable. Liquidity split isn't a problem after interchain transaction is possible with Layerzero, etc. Regulator uncertainty on Defi frontend isn't an issue because so far only HL enforced it. DEXs hacking on the other hand is really a problem, I don't even use 90% of DEXs I used because of this.

Agreed — decentralization alone isn’t enough if the UX feels complicated. The real challenge is making self-custody feel as simple as the platforms people already use. DEXs like https://dex.lcx.com/ seem to be moving in that direction.

Agreed on the network switching. Even a simple swap can turn into several steps once different chains, gas and approvals are involved. That’s a pretty big UX hurdle for new users.

DEXs like https://dex.lcx.com/ seem to be moving in that direction. No way man. Decentralization is the main advantage of DEX. Others are only just a bonus. It all started with decentralization, here in crypto and it all started simple. New users are lucky that DEX sites might have dramatically improved. But for those that chase a good UX and others, then they may not be genuinely into decentralization. To @Curious T, if talking about convenience, it can't be CEX because why will they require KYC and other shits when DEX are straight to the point? The moment you get on the homepage, you can trade right away. Maybe this is the reason on why their UX are simple to, to make things much quicker. With what I said about CEX, and how popular CEX are, it is only a proof that people can also do hard stuff just to experience that thing they can not see on the other.
