This is also my question but the CEO doesn't have a clear answer to it. Unlike the response of bybit when they have been hacked, Ben allowed the withdrawals to come and they've said that they took loans just to sustain the withdrawals for all customers want their funds out. If the hack of $351M for bitget happened and they have $464M of protection funds, they should have reacted asap and allowed to pay that for all users wanting to withdraw.
That amount will not cover 100% of lost user funds, it simply won't. They manage those funds independently, without external intervention, and likely enforce usage limits in the event of a major hack. They are clearly striving to ensure this incident does not touch the SAFU reserves at all, or if absolutely necessary only a small fraction of them. So, I wouldn't view SAFU as an absolute guarantee, even though they hold substantial reserves. Unlike bank deposit insurance, crypto exchange protection funds are voluntary and not guaranteed by authorities, https://pluang.com/en/news-feed/dana-perlindungan-pertukaran-kripto-apa-yang-melindungi-andaThey have given the time period of withdrawals to be allowed again and I think that after this incident, they'll have the time to recover but most users won't be with them anymore. If you look closely, most hacks involving exchanges are suspected to be linked to North Korean hackers, and in most cases, the stolen funds are never recovered afterward. Convenient, huh.
I remember the biggest with bybit and then another one was with Ronin. It's already been announced as posted by one post above and that's a relief for all users who are waiting to pull out their funds. People never learn about keeping their funds on exchanges.

Actually I don't believe the funds is SAFU. Imagine how big the amount they lost from this hacking incident. For sure it affects lot of their user and also maybe Bitget might struggle to get back in their feet if they cannot recover that stolen funds.
So yeah there's high possibilities that Bitget will bite the dust here. That's why its good for people to avoid leaving their funds on centralized exchange, since they might experience this situation.
The reason why most people believe them is that Bitget Protection fund is around $464 million that is enough to cover the reported ~$350 million stolen except they were actually lying about having that amount as their protection fund which will be the end of that exchange if it is lie. Yes the withdrawals are suspended for now but I believe that they will be able to open it soon. I don’t think this might take Bitget to dust because exchanges like Bybit just 18 months ago actually lost more to their own hack than this. There amount was reports around $1.5 billion which is almsot 4x of biget and they survived from it. So most probably bitget can survive too. @$crypto$ already posted above the funds linked to Bitget protection funds. Now they can use that to cover their losses from said hacking issue. Also base in this report https://coinfomania.com/binances-cz-promises-aid-for-bitget-urges-community CZ is showing support on Bitget and said that he's willing to help them in this recent hacking incident. Binance CEO CZ has publicly pledged that Binance and the BNB Chain ecosystem will do everything possible to support Bitget, stating it was a "tough day for Bitget." This commitment highlights the importance of community support in the crypto market, particularly in challenging times. The statement reflects a proactive approach to fostering resilience within the crypto ecosystem, which could stabilize sentiment moving forward. So looking at the information provided and possible aid from Binance. There's strong chance that Bitget will survive despite of heavy losses they get from recent issue.

No. You got it wrong. That call was made three years ago, not now in 2026, not days ago after this hack.
Jeff warned that Bitget will possibly be a next FTX after he tried to use the exchange with HFT, and found severe wrong manipulations from Bitget bookmaker. With such things, his warning was reasonable as he and we would never know what will actually happen with an exploitation done by hackers.
At least, and very fortunately, after the FTX and Terra bankruptcies, this cryptocurrency exchange industry changed a lot, with Proof of Reserves, and Protection Funds so that exchanges have enough money to compensate their users after security hacks.
Another thing that is helpful for Bitget is their reserve is in bitcoin, not like FTX with most money in their exchange token FTT that crashed within days, and unlike Terra with not enough fund for such incidents.
Ive read that tweet. But look at what happened with Ftx and bitget, they are two completely different things. FTX collapsed from serious mismanagement and misuse of customer assets, while Bitget is dealing with a security incident. Basically Jeff's warning and prediction has not even played out and it just wasn't accurate. I remember when Bybit got hit with that $1.5b hack, everyone was also saying it could be the next FTX. And then what happened? Everyone ended up praising Ben Zhou instead. Why do I say we should not lump all exchange together and assume they'll end up like FTX? Simply because the regulatory framework's gradually maturing and market's growing up too, not just because most of them have Proof of Reserves now. I'm not saying an FTX-style collapse is completely off the table. But it will not be as easy as before, especially with government increasingly trying to regulate the industry.

Im not so sure about that. After all the brutal collapses we've seen MtGox, Ftx demand for exchanges never really went away. Just look at Bybit, their reputation even went up after the hack. So I kinda doubt users are just gonna abandon Bitget over this once they manage to clean up the mess. People never learn about keeping their funds on exchanges. CEX users are not just holders either, you've got traders, speculators, P2P merchants in there too. As long as DEX still have not figured this part out, people are gonna keep relying on CEX.

If anyone is interested in following the funds, Bitget has released a realtime tracker for the exploiter's addresses[1].
It looks look like the exploiter has been using Thorchain[2][3][4](a cross chain DEX for those who are not familiar with it) to swap XRP --> BTC[5].
Thanks for the information but what we want now is the exchange Bitget to allow people to be withdrawing. The exchanges is allowing deposits but withdrawals are now allowed. If the money the hackers stole are stolen successfully stolen, there is protection funds which they can release for their customers and continue the exchange as if nothing happened. I reached out to a friend few hours ago, he said his $50 is on the exchange and he is unable to withdraw.

The withdrawal process will start tomorrow the 28th-9-2026 with only those having assets on bitcoin network been able to withdraw that tomorrow. According to their announcement different network will be able to withdraw on specific days. This is possibly to reduce traffic I think. So your friend can be able to withdraw since his amount is just $50 but I am looking at those who have left high amount on the exchange like more $5k I think they will be having difficulty because of the daily withdrawal limit. At the end the exchange make or break is how they handled this withdrawal, I think most customers have already been lost due to this withdrawal suspension. They might lose the rest if they don’t handle it well

I agree with what you posted except this one, I said so because I know how people are thinking. They will only first withdraw their money but if they are able to withdraw the money, do not let it surprise you if they deposit the money back on the exchange thinking that their money is safe with the exchange.

Just by looking at their current withdrawal schedule you will see that this Bitget exchange already allows customers to withdraw cryptocurrency as I mentioned earlier. After more than $350 million was hacked from this CEX, many speculated that they might not allow users to withdraw money because they froze many crypto assets. See if your friend has 50 USDT then this exchange will be able to withdraw USDT from Ethereum, BSC, Solna and Tron network from September 30th according to the withdrawal schedule. First they allow customers to withdraw Bitcoin, Ethereum and USDT and later allow other coins and P2P So it seems like maybe this is how users will be able to gain control of their assets.

@Murat. The CEO of Bitget Gracy Chen went on live stream and talked about the hack and what they are doing to make the funds safu, however, on her face it very much appears that the funds are not safu. On the ending of the stream, it very much appears that she will pull out all of hair from stress.
It will not be very shocking for the people of this forum if Bitget will be the next exchange to bite the dust hehehehe. I hope no one in the forum has funds in this exchange!
Hackers are using AI these days to perform intense level hacks. Any security vulnerability in an exchange will give hackers access to the funds; they don't care about the ones who will suffer such hackers will drain the funds as soon as they can. This time it happened to Bitget and previously it happened to other exchanges as well. That's why it's safe to say that keeping your funds at an exchange was risky, is risky, and it will always be risky. Especially in such times when LLMs and AI agents are reaching peak of intelligence, I don't think any site on internet is safe especially the exchanges. In past few months we've read many such incidents happening in crypto world so it's better to not leave our money at the exchanges. Fortunately the users might not suffer a lot thanks to User Protection Fund of Bitget but still because of the hack now majority of users won't trust Bitget. I also agree to your argument! I was also beginning to speculate this in the forum on this thread. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5585551.msg67022242#msg67022242However, there is a very headshaking man called @Satofan44 who appears to argue against anything I will say heheheeh. In any case, whatever the real story behind this hack might be, the loser will always be us the small minnows in the cryptospace. This is certainly why we cannot blame that much of the people here taking as much money as possible from the cryptospace. This is a certain occurrence if the big fish will not take care of the small minnows.

The exchange has just announced the phased resumption of withdrawals with only BTC withdrawals enabled[1]. If trading is still enabled on the platform, I would imagine one could trade whatever he has to BTC and then withdraw as a workaround. [1] https://x.com/bitget/status/2104489868722327700

This is true, people can withdraw bitcoin on Bitget now, but withdrawal on lightning network is still disabled, but the main bitcoin network and the altcoin network which is BEP20 (Binance Smart Chian) have been enabled.

Interestingly, there is a dispute between Thorchain and OKX executives, which has led to questions regarding the decentralization of the Thorchain protocol. Come to think of it, OKX makes a somewhat valid point. Thorchain is essentially just like any other typical PoS-based altcoin. False! THORChain effectively proved that it is not truly decentralized. In May, when its own vaults were drained, node operators paused the entire network within minutes and kept it offline for 13 hours. A network that can stop when its own funds are at risk, but refuses to do so when someone else’s funds are at risk, is not “like Bitcoin.” Bitcoin cannot be stopped. THORChain can—it simply chooses when to do so. Replying to @star_okx There is no central authority and no censorship mechanism.
Stop coping because your failed centralized model can't protect users.

In relation to individuals tracking the funds, the XRP transferred through the Near network, reportedly valued at $257K, is currently frozen. The contributor asserts that he hasn't received any rewards since the CEO of Bitget has set up a bounty for anyone who can help recover the stolen assets. https://x.com/SpecterAnalyst/status/2104623399314366747?s=20
