First, I would like to define what the Central Government and the Federal Government are to provide context for the topic.

What is considered the central government?

The government which exercises national supremacy over other governments within a country is the central government. Usually, it has the sole right to collect taxes, manage a national army, and conduct foreign diplomacy with other nations on behalf of these smaller governments. It also serves to unify the country under a single, recognized leadership.

What does the "federal government" mean?

A federal government is a central government of a nation. In a federal system, the nation is divided up into a number of regional governments, such as state or provincial governments, that are subordinate to the central system.

Our country has been a central form of government since our independence in 1945. We are divided into three regions, over 170 to 185 distinct languages, hundreds of local dialects, and two major religions: the southern part is Muslim, and the Northern part comprises Muslims and other minority religions.

The idea of turning from a Central to a Federal form of government was introduced and tried to be implemented by our former government, but it did not succeed.

The majority feel that the answer to economic woes is turning to the federal government because many parts of the regions are being neglected, and only the central part of the regions, where the central government is located, is flourishing.

Natives from other regions go to the central region because that is where the opportunities are.

Since your country runs a central government system you should compare how your economic growth has been to a country that runs a federal government system.
I am familiar with the federal government system and I haven't lived in a country that has the central government system but it's not about the system of government but who are in government, if corrupt leaders are in government the economy won't grow but if they are competent the economy will grow.

One of the disadvantages of a central government is that it doesn't share legitimate power with any other unit or region within it and that is why you will notice concentrated progress and infrastructural achievement in the central which is usually the seat of power. This is the reason with your explanation that opportunity are more in the central. In federal system or confederation, the federating units get a constitutional financial budget or allocation and that is why you see some amount of progress in those other regions and as a federating units, they make up to the federation and progress is recorded as a country.

However, no matter the system a country decide to adopt, what matters is the rule of law and supremacy of the constitution. If the people in government get punished constitutionally then lesser corruption will breed better economic and sociocultural progress for all. Corruption is what makes it look like one system of government is better than the other. None to me is better than the other, what matters is the one that will be suitable for the country's geography, topography, history and culture of the people etc.

I don’t think the model or form of government whether Centralized or Federalized matters, what matters is who gets vested the power to lead. Some people might disagree with this though but if you look it closely you’ll notice that they’re successful nations from each of these form of governance. So there’s no single best form.. it totally depends on the country in question and you didn’t specifically mention which country you’re from.

Singapore for example use the centralized form of government and they’re a very successful country, but this doesn’t mean their model will work for everyone. The country isn’t that big, hence the reason why this form of government was successful.

Switzerland on the other hand uses Federalism and they’re also very successful, Federalism works best for them because they’re somehow diversed.

So since your country has a diverse population with lots of languages, a federal government might be better suited for it because Centralized Government usually fail in such situations because the government becomes too distant from the local communities.

Like any decision, there will always be pros and cons. The question is whether it would be good overall, but you shouldn't consider every single parameter. IMO, the overall outcome should be positive for the country.

Would it be efficient in the tax system? I'm thinking that since different regions would handle their own businesses, wouldn't it be hard to collect for the country overall, because a poor region might struggle to prosper because of its region entirely? Maybe increase a percentage, or add some kind of revenue sharing, so the tax would cover the country?

Before we decide which one is better, I think there is something wrong with the comparison, because a federal system still has a central or national government.

The real distinction is actually between a federal and a unitary system.

This is just an assumption, so I think you should back it with real records. We cannot simply assume that because the government is centralized, growth is only happening in the center ( or central).

I believe we are from the same country, so let's use the Philippines as an example. Of course there is still a big difference in opportunities between Metro Manila and many provinces, but according to the official PSA data, all 18 regional economies recorded growth in 2025.

So maybe a better question is whether federalism could help reduce the gap between the center and other regions, rather than assuming that areas outside the center are not growing.

I don't think it necessarily works that way, where a poor region would struggle just because its tax collection is low. It still depends on how the tax system is designed.

With the right system, the federal government can still collect national taxes and redistribute part of the revenue to poorer regions or those with weaker tax capacity.

You could take the comparison of dividing labor amongst workers with the federal authority and weigh it with that of the central government. A government divided into several other governments makes it easier for development to thrive, as it would not affect the entire country when the central government fails the citizen. When a country is controlled by a central authority without other counterparts, corruption could ruin the entire country, the leaders in question are the sole determinesrs of what the economy of the country could turn out to be.

Corruption and bad leaders are the problem of most countries and unless that is treated, whether we employ central or federal system of governance, the economy of the country or region would be affected.

Although Federalism helps with ensuring that wealth is kept local while fostering growth in other regional hubs, corrupt politicians can always hijack the system to their own benefit and this is where the issue lies.

When there's no strong presence of anti corruption agencies to check corrupt practices, or when there's no fair funding formula and stability of the nation as a whole, shifting power will only do little to effect economic growth.

The system of government cannot ensure the development of any country. If the right leadership qualities, honesty and accountability can be ensured in the central government and the federal government system, then the development of the country is possible in both the systems of government. If the leadership qualities are absent or the government is corrupt, the federal system of government can also fail.

Instead of changing the system of government, clean the corrupt leaders from your country and put an honest and competent person in the seat of government. I can definitely say that the central government of your country will also be able to develop every region of the country equally.

Judging by the responses under this thread, you could see that each of the systems of government can be important for economic growth based on the country of concern.

The size of the country, population and diversity can make one to be better than the other in power distribution and economic growth.

So it's not really about the type of government but the type of individuals in leadership. If the people in power are not accountable, if the system is built to allow resources and opportunities to reach the people who truly need them, economic growth will remain a fairytale to citizens regardless of the type of government.

When it comes to the economy they will do exactly what has been done in the past and the

They will first seek to look after the business class, the minority at the expense of the general

I am familiar with the federal government system and I haven't lived in a country that has the central government system but it's not about the system of government but who are in government, if corrupt leaders are in government the economy won't grow but if they are competent the economy will grow.

I don’t really think it’s the system of government alone that determines if economy will grow or not. I’m familiar with federal system and even if i haven’t lived in a country where central government system operates, I believe the people who are in power is more important than the system on it own. If corrupt and incompetent leaders are in government, economy will definitely suffer irrespective of the system.  But if leaders have competence, good policies and accountability they can create environment where business and economy will grow.

I've not heard about the Central government before and the federal government is mostly used when we want to differentiate state and country in general.

In my country we have state government and the federal government which over sees everything.

To me, government are on body. They come together to make sure the economic status of the country is in shape or they are supposed to?. What we see today in many systems are different heads making decisions without appropriate thinking of the negative impact on the economy.

Each of these governments needs to be on the same page for a system to work, that is the only way a country can experience strong economic growth.

But what do we have today? Corruption at the highest level and no body cares as long as they are able to loot enough for their third generation that's is yet to be born.

Federal system of government that is made up of a federating unit with the various components empowered to develop at their own pace is better than the unitary system where everything is centralized. The later makes government far from the people and also create room for leakages, weak institutions and very difficult to implement check and balance. Finally, there is the tendency to abuse power in federal system because the man at the center becomes too powerful and difficult to control and rarely answerable to the people.

The equitable distribution of resources can play the biggest role in solving the problem you mentioned, changing the government system is not a solution. Be it the central government or the federal government, if the resources are equitably distributed and equally provided to each region, then the development of every region of the country is possible by any government.

This requires the government to have a developmental mindset and accountability towards every citizen. However, we have to accept one thing that the government alone can never develop the country. You may notice that some regions are automatically developed, it is mainly done by the people of that region. Therefore, to develop a region, the government as well as the people must play a role.

I can not afford to argue with your definition with the federal and central government but would like to focus on the economy factor.
The truth is that when it comes to economy implementations or progressions, it is the government who oversees the infrastructures of the country which is the federal government that are of the responsibilities.

The Central government is the most authority parliament where other branches of governments at different levels and different locations are linked.

I believe we also have governments from the local and state level with the federal government over ruling them am which can otherwise be called a central government.
So it is the duty of the most authorities to implement and regulates the system of the economy.

My country runs a federal government and there was a time I was beginning to think that the central government type is better off this one. Seeing your complaint about this now makes me even feel that none of them is the best and the solution to this is good leadership. When you have good leaders in power, there is no need to bother on which system of government the country works on. Everything will flourish and no side will feel left behind when policies are being made and economic development structures are being discussed upon.

We both live in OP's country, so I am also a witness to how power and wealth are not properly distributed. Many regions are neglected because so many officials in the legislative branch are from the central region, and as a result, many regions are not properly represented.

The central region gets a huge cut of the yearly budget. If we have a federal government, there's a high chance that all regions will be properly represented, and we won't keep electing the same leaders from the same regions under a central form of government. Under a federal form of government, we can elect leaders to office from all regions.

That being said, in my country we have two systems. The federal government and the state government. Take the federal government to be the central government in your country and the state government to be the federal government. For economic growth, the responsibility rests on both shoulders. Economic growth is not done by one man. Take China, for example. Every citizen makes sure they contribute to the growth of the economy in the way they can. And the government, in return, does what is needed for the citizens. Both the government system and the people are responsible for the growth of an economy.

It's hard to say because it depends on the country. One model could work well for one country and be advantageous but at the same time the same model could be devastating for another country. But I can say for sure that when it comes to choosing between Central and Federal government models, effects of it on economy is the last thing to consider.

For an actual nation-state, a central government is best. For others who are struggling with their congruence it won't work which is why they lean toward a federal model.
