China made a major change in 2026, and this has actually caused a lot of uproar.

But there’s an important point people are getting confused about.

China repealed its previous 2021 cryptocurrency restriction, but that does not mean Bitcoin trading suddenly became fully legal across mainland China.

The new rules still restrict cryptocurrency-related business activities, while China continues to develop areas such as its digital yuan and regulated blockchain applications.

So, was the ban lifted?

The bigger question is: what does this change actually mean for Bitcoin and the global crypto market?

Chinese government ban on bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies has not been lifted, but somehow bitcoin in considered as a property that can be legally owned in China, but its trading is not allowed.

Digital yuan is not something new at all since PBOC has been researching about it in 2014 and it was announced in 2019 and launched in 2020 which is now 6 years ago.

Digital yuan is not a cryptocurrency, although it may use blockchain technology, but not considered as cryptocurrency.

No, ban hasn't been lifted. It is true that old law has been repealed in new circular. However main ban has not been relaxed in slightest. RWA tokenization and Yuan pegged stablecoin have been added to this prohibited list again, with greater precision.

The path to business is completely blocked now. Legal action for illegal financial activity will be taken against any overseas exchange offering or even any company using the term Crypto or RWA in its name. lol

So paint has changed but the cage remains same! Tongue

China is a huge market for almost everything these days and that's why many are wanting to ally with them. And this means for bitcoin that it hasn't been opened yet, the market of opportunities for crypto. Because they have given a go signal that they're fine again with bitcoin then many of its citizens will go and buy bitcoin without thinking of any sanction. I wonder what's with their CBDCs because IIRC, they have been one of the countries who has made a lot of noise about it that they're developing one.

The new romances law I consider to be more brutal than when crypto was completely banned in China. From what I understand from the new law is that you are allowed to hold crypto like bitcoin and others as private property, but you are not allowed to use them in any business transaction as it's forbidden, basically you are allowed to own it but not allowed to spend it.

Digital yuan is not a cryptocurrency, although it may use blockchain technology, but not considered as cryptocurrency.
For China to update its rules just because they see a great need for Blockchain technology is not same as unbanning Bitcoin or crypto currency for that matter because in truth, anyone can own Bitcoin privately but the issue is that unlike most countries that have come to adopt it as a legal tender or for tax payments, it isn't interested in using or integrating crypto currency into their monetary systems but all it is concerned about is how to take advantage of the Blockchain technology for a state project like digital yuan and other regulated assets tokenization.
They care more about regulations and control than decentralized currency systems of which they may have no control over because they are so tech savvy and it might be an issue they can't control if they allow it.

Isn't it another FUD, China's ban on crypto didn't begin now, they always find a way to recycle the news to garner publicity for the sole intention of monopolizing digital Yuan amongst her citizens. They're about tens of millions of Chinese crypto investors, which amounts to a total of 5% of the entire crypto users in the world, if they grab a hold of maybe 2% through the spread of such FUDs like we've banned bitcoin or crypto trading in China, their digital Yuan would find itself a massive growth. Over the years, unfortunately, China haven't found a footing to tramp down on crypto users in that region, so, it's not a ban they want but a migration to boost domestic digital assets other than that of the foreigners.

No it hasn't been lifted but the rules prior was worked on
One of the reasons they were against is was that they wanted total control over their money
And well Bitcoin is decentralised which is quite against that.
And basic generic reasons like Crimes, Risk and the energy it might need for mining.
People do still mine in China.

Weird, I see many traders in OKX are Chinese people. If crypto is banned in China, why are there still many Chinese people trading in OKX? I use Orbit; most of the people give analysis there, usually in Chinese text. Even in copy trading usually Chinese people.

I believe they are secretly still trading in OKX even it was banned what you think?

As far as I know, I think the Chinese government has not lifted their ban on Bitcoin and all cryptocurrencies from their country. The Chinese government's plan is different, they may be trying to promote their currency all over the world, I don't know if they will succeed in this, but their plan is completely different. However, if Bitcoin is legal in China and all cryptocurrencies are fully legalized, I think there will be a big push for Bitcoin and all cryptocurrencies because China is a big country and there are many Bitcoin investors and users and also mining companies.

There is reason why you don't see cryptocurrency exchange from mainland china, ownership of bitcoin is allowed but any kind of transactions is outlawed.

The chinese owned cryptocurrency exchange is always headquartered offshore and only serve users outside china.

Basically they only allow it as some kind of collectibles and nothing more and they're justifying it to prevent capital flight and so on.

Digital yuan is CBDC, and it's probably not even a crypto nor use blockchain. Doesn't mean anything for crypto.

Weird, I see many traders in OKX are Chinese people. If crypto is banned in China, why are there still many Chinese people trading in OKX? I use Orbit; most of the people give analysis there, usually in Chinese text. Even in copy trading usually Chinese people.

As far as I know OKX only available to Macau and Hongkong, it isn't available for mainland China and restricts user originating from there. Maybe they live in either one of these two regions.

AFAIK, china banning crypto or something related to crypto already happens many times. in the past any news about china ban crypto giving big impact to the bitcoin price. i remember how china banning ICO around 2017 when ICO booming at the time. after that, i'm not really remember the year, but they are banning crypto mining. so, they are very strict about crypto not just bitcoin. so, if they are unbanning crypto from their country i believe the new bitcoin ATH wouldn't waiting for too long. but, i don't think it will be happens, because china have their own rules about crypto, so it will be hard to say it will be fully lifted from their rules. maybe they are just making an adjusment for minor rules not total unban.

Short answer: Not yet
You can read and get more details with https://globallawexperts.com/china-crypto-ban/
https://newhedge.io/terminal/bitcoin/legality-map

Most important, with a nation and government like China and CCP, do you really trust them that any national policy won't be reversed very quickly?
They can ban, lift the ban, and re-enforce the ban, it's China and CCP.

Quote
The bigger question is: what does this change actually mean for Bitcoin and the global crypto market?
If bans on cryptocurrency market, crackdowns on cryptocurrency mining are all removed, lifted, there will be good impacts on these industries because China has huge population, great hydro power resources for mining farms, and they have massive cryptocurrency investors, traders and enthusiasts.

But the point is the world still exists without China, and cryptocurrency as well as mining industries will still exist, grow well without China.

So, was the ban lifted?

The bigger question is: what does this change actually mean for Bitcoin and the global crypto market?
The ban isn't lifted because there are still some restrictions to it. I guess we can say that they became a little bit lenient with their rules.

To summarize everything, you can legally own Bitcoin but there are extreme restrictions to it because well... it's China so what's surprising? Cheesy The ones that's banned from doing in China are: Trading, Bitcoin mining, the usage of Bitcoin and crypto as a transaction in different companies and banks, and P2P transaction thru Fiat-Crypto. Those are the ones that are banned.

As for the actual change. None. Cheesy We've seen China banning crypto ever since 2017, and correct me if I'm wrong, but they have the same stance ever since. Right now, they're promoting their Digital Yuan which isn't a crypto, but just by looking at the name itself, it's a digital version of their own currency. The big change will only happen if China miraculously lift the ban on crypto and when I mean lifting the ban, I mean lifting it from trading to mining, etc. Smiley

No, the ban on Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in China has not been lifted; on the contrary, the laws may have become even stricter.

Some confusion regarding the "lifting of the ban" may have arisen from a technical misunderstanding of the 2026 regulatory update, as the new notice revoked the 2021 notice only to replace it with a stricter regulatory framework.

China most likely aims with this move to completely clear the field for its official digital yuan (e-CNY) which is backed by the Chinese central bank.

The Chinese speaking community is huge. Many of them live in Hong Kong, Taiwan or Singapore. Hong Kong and Singapore got their own crypto regulations, so people you come across using Chinese are probably not even from mainland China.

Afaik, the Chinese ban mainly restrict domestic activity, but users still can find a way to reach the platform from overseas. Like the member at the top said, Bitcoin is still a legal asset there. That mean many people will continue to trade via overseas channels.

And last thing, there will always be people willing to break the ban, same as in many other countries.

That new rule is just like a gateway that's opened but people can't go through it (an open closed gate) which makes little to no difference. Legally owning Bitcoin and you can't use it anytime you want or soon is the same as those who doesn't own Bitcoin. The restrictions is still there but if I am in china, I will just blindly go on to hold Bitcoin with my discretionary funds (funds that I can afford to lose) because some how sometime there will be a total lift and Bitcoin will be like a new asset in china and people who have it will take full advantage of what they have all that long, just like when Bitcoin started newly.
Could it be that they want a better ground for digital yuan that they claim not to be a crypto.

The bigger question is: what does this change actually mean for Bitcoin and the global crypto market?
Nothing special. Even bitcoin is banned or not allowed trading in China, youll find it weird that many on the Chinese community continue to trade crypto and even discuss it on some socials. Why is that? Maybe theyre not allowed to trade on their homeland but holding it isnt illegal. Some might use VPN to access some trading site or mostly out of the country doing some trades.

The Government can imposed rules but it doesnt mean chinese fellow will follow.

Listen carefully, when it comes to china and Bitcoin they will always behave in this manner, it has always been how they do things, one year they ban Bitcoin, a year or two later they uplift the ban.

You can still find such old news online using AI search or something, china has banned Bitcoin too many times than every other countries in the world.

You want my advice? Stop taking China too seriously when it comes to Bitcoin, it's like they are waiting for somekind of Bubble to take place in the future or something, they support today and later they detached from it.

It would have been appropriate if you referenced a document or publication where China repealed its cryptocurrency laws. Discussions would have been less complex with a source document.

The digital yuan is fiat that uses blockchain. Therefore, I don't see any impact its use in China would have on the crypto market. I think there would be an impact if China ended its prohibition and expanded its crackdown on real cryptos like Bitcoin.
