Most of the individuals want to start their own business but they are afraid of one thing " WHAT WILL PEOPLE SAY". They aren't scared of losing or winning but the above statement kills their ambitions and they usually prefer traditional jobs from 9-5 which brings them hand to mouth but they are still ok with that. A person selling street food earn more than a PHD scholar who gets a toffee in the shape of salary which doesn't reach even to mid of the month. Why are we ashamed of starting our own business?

Of course, billions of people have set up their own businesses and are running them, but I’m one of those people who are terrified at the very thought of working for myself. I think it’s a situation that involves incredible risks. If someone plays it very safe beforehand and sets up the business with money they can afford to lose, that’s fine, but I simply cannot understand those who set up their own business with their last penny – or even without any capital at all – and plan to live off the income from it. There’s so much risk involved. Besides, the business might simply not take off, or you might not earn enough. I think this is an incredibly risky situation. Managing your life around it is, in my view, very difficult. But of course, high risk can also mean high reward. There are certainly plenty of people who’ve become wealthy this way. In fact, it’s almost the only way to become wealthy without being born into wealth. But I’m not the sort of person who could live with that level of risk. As the OP said, ‘what will people say’ and the risk of problems arising prevent me from doing something like this. I respect people who can do that, but I am not one of them.

Being ashamed or thinking of what people will say and using that as an excuse not to start a business is completely new to me, all my life, those I've meet who refused to start their own business all gave the same excuse, and the excuse is that they are afraid of failing. So for this reason, they preferred to remain with the job that pays them monthly salary.

The last company I worked with before resigning to start my own business, I still have a very good friend of mine working there and it's been over 10 years now since I left and he is still there, he's reason for not taking the same step I took is that he is afraid of failing in the business..
I've never meet anybody who told me the reason he or she can't start a business is due to shame of what people will say, this will be such person being stupid actually.

I disagree - I would have thought most entrepreneurs are less concerned about what people think
and more concerned with points like, will the business be profitable, will I be able to secure funding,
do I have the necessary skills to carry it through to viability.

Most people dont care what others think of them, and this is more the point for people who are business
orientated. If most people were affected by what others think - then nothing would get done.

If anyone truly believes they have a viable business opportunity they will and should see it through as
far as they can go with it.

When an employee is going to establish a business, I do not think people frown about it, and at the same time, the person who will establish the business feels embarrassed.  According to any person I talked to about them establishing a business, they feel proud about it.  And most of the people who learned that the people they know is about to establish a business feels envious.  So I think it is not "What the people say" is the problem, but rather the fear of "whether they can do it or not"  And what you stated in italized  on the quoted message below fully supports what I am saying.

I do not know what to be ashamed of when establishing a business.  Unless the business is illegal and/or immoral, I believe there is nothing to be ashamed of.

I think it is definitely right to follow what you believe is right for you, do what you can, and stay consistent.

Maybe if you focus on overcoming these fears about starting a business, it could become successful.

We should remember that everyone has their own ways of doing things, so they might care about what other people think or not; the business should reflect what is best for that specific person. It is not always an apple-to-apple comparison.

Yes, this is the main problem, people are afraid to start a business. They think that it will not be possible for them to do business or they do not start a business because of the loss. But the real smart ones who have the ability to do business prefer to start a business as soon as possible without wasting time.

I don't think this kind of examples are true. Maybe in some developing countries and with very specific examples you could find some cases where this is true, but in the majority of cases this is not going to be true. This is even more so in the developed world. So be careful how you present examples in any topic, because you are showing a reality that does not exist. Very few PHD scholars in the world earn less than a street food seller.

It should be made clear here that starting your own business is very risky and that most businesses that are started fail. Sometimes it leads to a complete bankruptcy of the individual. We must be careful to give accurate advice and not make things sound much better than they really are. Starting your own business is not an answer for everything and it often does not work out. If it worked out each time, then everyone would be running their own business and would never have a normal job and a salary. But if you look at the data, the opposite of that is true. Most people are working jobs with salaries and very few are running their own business. This gives an indication that that is the better choice in many cases.

We should not underestimate the label at which our minds can conceive ideas. Any potential or abilities you have start with our mindset and how we think. This is what is really affecting so many people today: they can't achieve what they are expected to because they don't have a positive mindset about it.

We cannot afford to be a failure when we even get to start doing something. Every step you see people take today is a result of what they have already conceived in their minds before they unleashed it as action. Anything is possible for us to achieve in life as long as we are determined to go for it, regardless of the cost.

OP, I don't know for the general public but I don't think "What will people say" is the biggest reason people don't gather the courage to start a business, I think the more common fear is "what if I don't succeed" or "what if I people don't patronize my business" while alot of people seek validation from social media to encourage  them to remain idol. That's the biggest reason for me

Before I answer this question, I want to ask another. If everyone becomes entrepreneur, who will the entrepreneur employ for his business to grow? You can see how we somehow talk down on something that might later come and harm us. Each section, whether big, little or very little is important. I just want to point this out first.

There are factors that allow people not start their one business, some could be time, capital, fear of loss and so on. Whatever reason they have, once they overcome it, the sky will just be their starting point. But still if you work 9-5, it's not a bad thing. Not everyone is cut out to be a business owner. All fingers are not equal.

People will always have something to say and not living your life or doing things you wish to do is the dumbest thing because, people will never get tired of talking.

That's the first thought they have when they haven't experience life's lessons. But when they grow older and become more mature, they would care no more to the opinions of people.

They don't care what will be said to them when they're only trying to make ends meet. What is important that you're living and working for the money and food honestly.

Maybe its not actually that they are ashamed of what business they will replace with their stable 9-5 job but they are afraid to fail and that failure may be witness by other people and afraid of their criticism after. And they will hear people saying that leaving that kind of job and entering a business with no guarantees is the worst decision ever.

This is the reason why one should not leave his job when venturing into his own business. Let that business be established and succeed first before finally letting go of the job and focus on the business to maximize the income.

I understand your point. There is no big or small business when started from scratch. But people usually fear and get ashamed when the business ends up in failure, especially if that kind of business requires a huge amount of initial capital. But what do you expect, people will always have something to say when there is negative result, but when your business succeed, all you will hear are praises and that going into business is never a mistake.

In the end, your choices and decision making reflect the outcome of your business. Just think of it that you are not doing it for other people but only for yourself and for the bright future ahead when your business finally hits success.

People should learn how to make their own decisions and forget about what people will say, because the simple truth remains that whether you are doing well or not, they will still talk about you. So why are we holding ourselves back why we already know that human beings are not always trustworthy?

We don't have to start with a negative thought in whatever we are doing because we are doing it for our own benefit and not for anyone else at all, because there is a higher chance for you to get what you want when you start with a positive mindset and put your whole effort into the business.

The truth is that some of these people don't even care as much as you think; it is all in your head.

Even if it is just a street food outlet that you have by the side and it is earning you consistent profit, I think you're better than an individual who is working 9 to 5 for someone else because you are your own boss and you pay yourself, unlike that person who's working for someone that can take the job at any time, especially if it's a private sector.
