Talking about mining: Has the "mining death spiral" already an entry?
It does now. I'd missed it, and it's a better entry than most because it came with a mechanism instead of just a mood: price falls, miners quit, blocks slow, panic, price falls further. So it can be checked against the time it was actually tested, which wasn't the 2018 bear market. It was summer 2021, when the China ban took roughly half the hash rate off the network in a few weeks. Blocks slowed, difficulty dropped by the largest amount in its history, and that was the end of it. Your framing works and I'll use it. Thanks for digging out the Spiegel column too. Even if it isn't the one you remembered, Hashgraph in the headline next to Bitcoin in 2017 does the job.

By the way, I'm a bit surprised the late Charlie Munger doesn't have an entry here. The man could easily spew a continuous stream of vitriol against Bitcoin in one sitting.
He should have had one from the start, since the rat poison line was his before it was Buffett's. Munger gets his own run of dated quotes next to Buffett's, and the two you gave with the CNBC and meeting links are the core of it. One note on how he'll be filed: "disgusting" and "contrary to the interests of civilization" are opinions, so the chapter reports them without scoring them. "Very likely to go to zero" is a prediction and gets treated as one. No rush on Medalla, and thanks for looking.

Government didn't change change their mind because of Bitcoin alone, instead there were pressure from different angles that they just couldn't resist all of them. Bitcoin only pave way for the protest when there was no way, when government restricted normal financial system.
That's an important correction and I'll write it that way. The claim the chapter can support is the narrow one: when the bank accounts were frozen, the donations kept moving. It won't say bitcoin won the protest or reversed the ban.

Bitcoin is still banned in my country and is considered a source of payment for illegal transactions.
This needs to be in there too, and thank you for saying it. A list like this can make it sound as if every ban ended the way Nigeria's did. Some haven't ended. The chapter will say plainly that "governments will ban it" was wrong about bitcoin stopping and right about plenty of people still not being allowed to use it.

It should be classified more under partly right than entirely wrong.

If you find a primary source from the 2010-2013 time frame that makes the same point. It might be well suited to the partly right box.
Agreed on both counts, it's partly right, and there's a source older than 2010. The very first reply Satoshi got when he posted the whitepaper to the cryptography list in November 2008 was James A. Donald saying that it didn't seem to scale to the required size. So the scaling objection is as old as Bitcoin, and the base layer still doesn't handle everyday payments on its own. That goes in the partly right section with Lightning as what happened next.

How about "anarchic new toy" OP, from reuters
I don't know that one. Do you have the link or the year? If it's Reuters and it's early I'd like it.

Quote from: Miles2006 link=topic=5595455.msg67196315#msg67196315
so far I observed people in my locality do think bitcoin price is influenced by some government or political bodies
"It's manipulated" will be its own label. The dated version is Roubini in December 2020, saying the price was totally manipulated by a bunch of whales.

Great stuff, please keep it coming!

He made fun of Bitcoin in May of 2018 on CNBC's Squawk Box calling it "pure 'greater fool theory' type of investment." He even added that he'd short it if there was an easy way to.

That's the dated source the greater fool entry was missing. Somebody on the Reddit thread raised the label yesterday but with no name attached. Gates, CNBC, 7 May 2018, two days after Buffett's rat poison line at the same Berkshire weekend. If you can find the Medalla interview I'll add him too, a central bank governor saying it is worth more than another investor saying it.

I'll try to find that Medalla interview. I actually did but to no avail so far. I'll try harder and get back to this thread as soon as I find it. I remember it was just an ambush interview and the quick question about Bitcoin was made in passing.
Excuse me, is it the interview with Felipe Medalla in June 2022 where he described Bitcoin as the  “greater fool theory.” if that is what you looking for then you can check this article link if it helps: https://bworldonline.com/top-stories/2022/06/20/455998/incoming-bsp-governor-not-keen-on-cryptocurrency/

By the way, I'm a bit surprised the late Charlie Munger doesn't have an entry here. The man could easily spew a continuous stream of vitriol against Bitcoin in one sitting.
Charlie Munger until his death never had any soft-spoken spot for Bitcoin, his criticism were some of the harshest I ever heard of about Bitcoin. Rat poison was his word for Bitcoin in 2013

In 2018 Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting he described bitcoin trading as dementia and worthless.
Quote

In one of his last interview about Bitcoin before his death he called it a stink ball.

I was particularly looking for that video in which he reiterated his unfavorable opinion on Bitcoin. He was already the central bank governor at that time. Unfortunately, I'm not even sure if it was uploaded by the news channel which got it. But, yeah, he's got the same view when he was still a member of the country's monetary board.

The one you're referring to was the roundtable discussion with the BusinessWorld editors. He was already designated as the central bank governor by this time, but hasn't assumed office yet. There was no video clip available of this interview. All we have is the script. But, again, Medalla was basically saying the same thing, that Bitcoin is based on "the greater fool theory".

Never used for a coffee? I thought someone used 1500 Bitcoin or similar to buy coffee in the past and they came back to told the world about it on twitter, Bitcoin have been proven to be useful for Coffee payment and now that we have LN? Easy.

I remember people calling Bitcoin dead so many times, I also remember that scam part too, I guess it's never going to end because when we have a bull market is when people will speak good about Bitcoin and when bear comes they will call it scam.

That's because some people still unfortunately buy the high prices and are forced to sell the lows because they don't really get how the market works.

It's live, and this thread is all over it: Rat Poison, Tulips and a Pet Rock: Everything Bitcoin's Been Called (so far)

What this thread put in it:
  • aoluain's three threads: Buffett and Munger have an arc from "rat poison" in 2013 to "$25 for all of it" in 2022, Dimon's 2015 and 2016 "governments would stop it" lines are in, and Roubini's 2018 Senate testimony and "zero" tweet are in the bubbles section.
  • Davidvictorson and Cookdata: the Nigeria ban, February 2021 to December 2023, with #EndSARS as the lead-in and what came after the lift. Nheer's caution is in too: bitcoin kept money moving, it did not win the protest.
  • boyptc: "fad." Shiller's word was "faddish," in April 2018 (at Davos that January he said "not a permanent feature of our lives"), and Howard Marks wrote "unfounded fad" in 2017, then took it back in 2021.
  • Cryptomultiplier: Krugman's "Golden Cyberfetters," September 2011, the deflation argument, filed under partly right because the hoarding happened.
  • d5000: obsolete and flippened, the Spiegel column, the mining death spiral (tested by China's 2021 ban), and the energy concession. Darker45: Gates and Medalla on the greater fool, and Munger. pooya87: Hearn's own entry. matrixx: GHash.io. Haunebu: Jack Ma. Catenaccio: Trump, from "seems like a scam" to the reserve.
The r/Bitcoin twin thread shaped the structure: the "can't recover from this" section, sorting every label by what would prove it wrong, and the closing section on what our own side got wrong.

Everyone above is credited by handle at the bottom of the chapter. If any of the dates or quotes are off, say so and it gets fixed and credited. Thanks, all of you.
