How about the seed phrase? He did not backup the seed phrase somewhere like on paper?

One thing about phone password is that to brute force it is hard. After like 5 attempts, it may keep doubling the times needed to try another password.

He should backup the seed phrase on paper or on metal sheet like stainless steel or titanium next time.

Was the phone factory reset?
Is it damaged?
What version of Android is it running?
Older, cheaper phones didn't have data encryption, so the chances are higher.
You can try using the Android Debug Bridge: delete gesture.key or password.key via the console.
If it's an LG or Samsung phone, there are special programs for unlocking them.

Generally, if you're dealing with a large amount of Bitcoin, you might want to consider working directly on the chip, but you'll need to find specialized specialists for this.

He still have that mobile with him but he isn't able to open it.

Maybe he save the passphrase or seed phrase of his wallet used somewhere else, so maybe he should start looking at those information on usual places, program or areas which he usually hide his important details.

If he cannot remember everything and the only thing he have is the device, there's low chance that he could able to recover back his lost funds.

Good that the mobile still in his position, but if he didn't recover the email, password, seedphrase/passphrase and other else out there that can help them open up their wallet. They might get stress about that situation, maybe better to move on and just forget about the situation happened in the past.

If it is an older phone (specifically one manufactured before 2016) it is easy to unlock it without deleting the data. However, if you mean that the wallet file is encrypted with strong password, then recovering it would be difficult.
In any case, if you are not fluent in English, it is best to move it to your local board.

I am guessing he did not do the backup or he did the backup on the phone. Some people make this kind of mistakes. What if something happened to the phone.

Generally, if you're dealing with a large amount of Bitcoin, you might want to consider working directly on the chip, but you'll need to find specialized specialists for this.
Maybe this might work, but it is not that simple, but if he has the wallet file, it may be simple. The files are on either eMMC or UFS. Or maybe he stored the seed phrase somewhere on the phone. But some people just create wallet, deposit coin on the address generated without any backup. This later one may be hard or impossible to recover. He will also spend high amount of money to a the person that will recover it, provided if he see someone that will do it. It is beyond the work of a phone repairer.

Is it the story and issue for your friend?

And your friend still invest in the market, does he invest in Bitcoin?
Make sure you tell your friend to back up his Bitcoin wallet. Firstly use non custodial, open source wallet to store his bitcoin, secondly backup his wallet.

Share this one with your friend.

If the seed phrase is saved on the the note, there is a chance that if the password does not work, you can get someone that can access the phone's eMMC or UFS. The person should be able to access what are stored on the note for him.

But note that it can be expensive. So if you do not have huge amount of coins, no need of him bothering himself if the amount of the coin is not huge.

But you can make investigation about it.

Don't let hackers or scammers get rid of you and complicate the issue the more, as long as you are using a non-costal storage for your assets, it is only you that should have control over the way of making the recovery to your device and having access to your coins, had it been it is non-custodial wallet you have been using, things would have been much more better because you will only have to make use of your recovery phrase and input your wallet on another device.

Therefore, don't let anyone deceived you on the recovery process and scam you.

You need to clear the air to get direct solution instead of generic answers. If your friend used an android phone in 2016, it's possible the phone might be the same year product which used android version that is encrypted or old android phones without encryption produced before 2013 and below.

Don't tell the engineer or the phone repairs that you have Bitcoin on the wallet, they can make you give up the phone so they can retrieve it.

Since the shop keeper told your friend that something is wrong with the circuit, hopefully it has nothing to do with the motherboard replacement. You should ask him what circuit is faulty. You should also ask your friend the particular product of the phone, you never can tell if you can get the same phone as scrap from other market place. You should be able to replace the chip that is good with the main phone and maybe it will work.

Yes, it's possible. We call the process "flashing" here. The technician can work on the phone to bring it back but you'll lose everything. It's the process of restoring the phone to factory settings and the process automatically wipe everything on the phone except the pre-installed factory apps.

I think that's their problem based on Op explanation.

I don't think he has the pass phrase. I would be really surprised if he did because for someone to forget their phone password that they use frequently, it means they can forget anything. Phone password is not usually long combinations and we type them everyday, if someone can't remember them, I doubt if they can securely keep their seeds.

This is something you and your friend should do but it needs an expert to find the problem, extract the spare parts from other phone with same model, transfer and do the repair. It might cost a bit, but if your friend is sure that those coins that will be recovered is enough of a fortune, that might really need a try.

Since the phone password means everything to him more than a private key or recovery seed then, I am guessing that he refuses to copy his recovery seed out of the phone, oh man oh man, if this is the case he is going to pay dearly for it.

This is going to be a very painful lesson for him, because what he needs right now isn't the phones password but the recovery seed if the crypto wallet he had installed in that phone.

I can't remember anymore but there is a flashing software that's capable of getting data from a locked android phone and I believe it's a non-free software, also I believe there is software for unlocking phones with lost passwords too.

You just need to right person for the job, someone who you can trust in your country.

...He tried to recover it but everyone around him told him that we can recover the mobile but not the data.

This is where the confusion lies, as suggested by Hugeblack, next time you can use your local board.

I assume that what you meant by recovering the mobile not the data is; they will flash the phone and make it usable again but all the data in it will be lost.

Since you said it's a low end phone, i don't know if the technicians can make a backup of the phone before flashing it with a new software.

If anyone know anything that could help him, don't forget to share it with us.
It's possible, but you need to tell us more than what you just narrated. Which country is he? What wallet was he using? What phone did you label a "low-end device from 2016?"

It's highly possible if you are in an advanced country, but be careful of scammers, especially online, so they don't steal that funds.

If he is lucky to have used a self-custody wallet, he can extract it from another self-custody wallet. If he used a non-custodial wallet, he can reset his details. And if both fails, then only the most advanced experts can help by-pass the screen lock with software and their expertise. This will cost you a fortune, and that's why I asked about your country.

The password of the mobile device doesn't have any to do with his Bitcoin, let him use another device get then wallet he used in saving him Bitcoin on the new device get a wallet by imputing the seed phrase of his wallet in the new device.

Seed phrase being saved in the note can make the situation easier if the data can be recover, but the access to the phone storage doesn’t automatically gives access to the Bitcoin wallet. The wallet might still have his own encryption or password.

That why it very risky to store your seed phrase only Inside your device. In a situation were by the device get misplace or faulty/inaccessible you see that you loss access to both backup abd wallet at the same time. Recovery will be much more easier if seed phrase is being kept offline, im a secure place because you could just recover your wallet in another device.

I don’t think there is any seed phrase stored anywhere, I would have asked how early the bitcoiner bought those bitcoin because in the earliest days of bitcoin like before 2011 there wasn’t any thing like mnemonic phrase then just private key and also the wallet.dat file which was used to recover the wallet back then. Mobile phones though do not have that option of wallet.dat file so I wouldn’t ask of that.

The question should maybe the OP friend actually saved the private key and from the post I strongly doubt that. The recovery from a dead Phone will be seriously hard because it would be able to recover files only and mobile wallet do not have that, so I don’t think OP has any chance of getting any thing from that Kind of recovery.

He have his everything saved in that phone but the issue is that the device have some circuitry problem and the shopkeeper told him that we can't recover the phone while saving the data .
Although time has passed and he also doesn't know the password of that phone. He have saved every single detail in the notes on that phone.
Your friend needs to explain the details as best he can for example, what kind of investment app it was. I’ve encountered relatives in the past who referred to any app related to Bitcoin or investments (including login credentials), simply as "BTC data."
