Funny enough, you cannot be too careful when downloading an application, if there is something specific you want the application to do for you, there is absolutely nothing you can do about it, except to download the app, this when you don't know if there are other hidden agenda the app might have. however I understand that in most of the app stores, there's always a space where you can see app review before you can download, in that review you will see a lot of persons that have had different views on the app, both negative and positive views, I believe that if the application is that dangerous, most app stores would not allow it in their space, because they've done some of their reviews  and due diligence before allowing it into the market, because if anything goes wrong, they might be capable too, so they too are careful.

Even with google play store and apple app store, there have been fake and scam apps being uploaded there.

Are you saying you miss those days? I thought that's a bad trend tbh. Not to mention people who are enthusiastic about modding will always finds community to share their finding. Trust Wallet is an example of such an app. There are so many things going on in the app. Recently, they even added a prediction market to it. It's just filled with so many services, and that makes it unsable for it. Even though it was an open-source wallet that I could use, the number of various services and ads on the app won't let me use it.
