High taxes don't make a country better or stop them from borrowing, but a country that is disciplined in the aspect of having politicians and leaders that are accountable and only spend what they earn, a country that encourage businesses within it to grow will keep taxes low and a country that knows how to hold every citizen accountable to paying their taxes will definitely experience more economic growth and development than the one that raises tax often thinking it is the solution to the economic woes they face.

Instead of taking the "high tax" approach, why can't just governments control their spending?
It's not as easy as an individual cutting down on their spening. If we're talking about governments that aren't corrupt and doesn't siphon public funds for personal use, then they do fund essential services and projects, and they cannot simply cut down on their spending. Taxation is a necessary evil and love or hate it, it's a major source of revenue for the state. And if you look at states with high taxes that's put to good use, they usually have a higher standard of living. Another way the government can raise funds without increasing taxes is through debt, by issuing bonds/bills.

Why would they do something like that? If people don't react to high taxes and don't change their vote at the ballot box, why would the government be afraid of the people? They would bring more taxes and spend more public money. While they were filling their own pockets with millions, they would put pennies into the pockets of the people. Certainly this doesn't apply to developed countries that are genuinely governed democratically. If there is no accountability in a country, the government can act however they want.

Many governments increase taxes with the hopes of correcting their mistakes. By "mistakes", I mean reckless spending, printing money excessively, etc. In some countries, taxes are high, while wages are utterly low. The end result? People get poorer, while the government continues to grow its coffers unfairly.
Instead of taking the "high tax" approach, why can't just governments control their spending? Like in the US, avoiding adding more burden to the national debt instead of increasing taxes or adding unnecessary tariffs. Or they can just tax the rich, while giving a "free pass" to the poor (or even reduce the taxes). Although, this is very unlike to happen.
What do you think? Your input will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
In my country whenever the government wants to correct its mistakes or raise money for election they increase taxes. As of last year, the government wanted to start taxing cryptocurrencies holders in my country which was supposed to begin this year, but I don't know what happened that made them change their mind. IMO, Instead of consistently taxing the poor and those who can barely afford to survive. The government should focus more on ensuring that wealthy individuals and large corporations pay their fair share of taxes, reduce unnecessary spending also improve accountability in the management of public funds.

Perhaps you are thinking from a logical perspective on debt and taxing but this individual’s who represent us in the daily governance of the nations don’t have logical reasoning like we do what they see is power and control and how to achieve extreme control, in new terms “Slavery” in modern societies; by taxing you more it makes the average man poorer and thus depending on the government more and such dependency leads to total control of the society, having put them in situations of looking for survival, hence rationality becomes things of the rich and the rich are their partners so they don’t tax them for sponsorships during campaigns and elections.

This is one of the scenarios where people become dissatisfied with the government. Taxes are necessary to help the government create infrastructure projects and sustain its services, but if they see unnecessary spending and corruption, people will start to complain, and they may even change the administration. We have seen how people revolt because of too many and higher taxes. Taxes should be reasonable and not seen as a burden, and people should know where their taxes are going; this is hard-earned money deducted from them.

This is what the people of our country feel, wages do not increase while taxes are always high, and that makes it surprising that 80% of state revenue is from taxes, while the opinion of Natural Resources is the rest... we have abundant resources, but taxes are what the government relies on. Instead of taking the "high tax" approach, why can't just governments control their spending? I don't know if we are surprised by such officials... we will not talk about the US, but rather the country itself where the budget is spent on a program that is not clear, which means that there is no benefit so great but the budget is large enough, whether this is due to political campaign promises or there is a gap can be corrupt.?

I know it is difficult to get used to the fact that selfishness has gained dominance in humans. Yes it is okay to put yourself first but is has gotten to the point where we want personal satisfaction at the expense of others.
It is sad to announce to you that every strategy that has been taken to fix the country but failed, brought returns to certain pockets. While it was a failure to the public, it could be a successful transaction to the master planners.
The issue of tax was one of the most talked about earlier this year, panic rose among the public. But the voice of but the government went deaf because they cannot risk accepting our quest because it will result in a drastic loss for them.
The country can be fixed if only they really want to and till then, everyone should continue their hustle to survive the economy. Lots has been going on, while we’re suffering we are still trying to survive but the idea or reaping from the masses again is unsettling. The government can change things, they just can’t risk it.

It reminds me of the situation in my own country. I know this is a divisive issue. Every country has its own set of problems.
Honestly, paying taxes isn't the issue. It’s the hassle of filing the returns that’s a nuisance. What really infuriates me, though, is the prevalence of corruption. A problem that just keeps getting worse here. So much tax revenue gets embezzled. Unfortunately, the penalties are far from strict. Corrupt convicts are practically coddled. I am truly sick of it.
Taxes place an increasing burden on everyone, the poor, the middle class, and the wealthy alike. Yet, the funds aren't utilized effectively. Instead, the money often goes toward programs I consider wasteful or worse, it becomes a breeding ground for corruption.

Manipulation of fiscal policies was usually applied as a subtle way of maintaining control by the ruling elite. The stranglehold of the tribute system made it difficult for the common man to be economically independent, hence poor. The dependence on food made it possible for the bureaucrats to have total control over the common people. Working with political financiers led to the exclusion of the obligation of tributes by the rich.

Pandemics and recessions are things that are beyond control, so even if the government control their spending, still they need more massive funds to cater to these emergencies, thus taking this "high tax" approach for rich and able to pay, and for those luxury items will definitely help and prepare the country for any emergencies happening in the future. There is no wrong with high tax as long as the funds are spend accordingly to its purpose, and not being corrupted by big whales in the government.

I think that a big question to answer is why should a government increase tax? If what the increased tax is used for is to the benefits of the ordinary citizens even if they complain they will atleast see what their taxes are being used for, although it is not good to overtax the citizens because of development.
When the government imposes high task on their citizens, and they are properly making use of the money for the rich thing, at least there is development in the country, most people paying the tax are just going to complain for a very short period of time, and they going to adapt since they know the money is coming back to the society. The most annoying part is that in some parts of the world, the government is imposing high taxes on the citizens, and the citizens don’t even know what the government is doing with the money, the money is being embezzled by the government, just that the government is taking from the poor, and they are enriching themselves which they are making the poor more poorer, and the rich are enriching themselves. You are going to find it difficult for citizens of countries like this to abide by the rules, because they know that they are cheated.

A large part of the government's income comes from taxes. When the government's expenditure increases, they print money or increase taxes. The government should increase taxes on luxurious items instead of increasing taxes on essential goods. This will automatically impose taxes on the rich, but it will not have much impact on the common people . Along with this, the government should also control unnecessary expenses. If the government cannot reduce expenses and keeps increasing taxes from the people to make up for the deficit, then the problem will not be solved. As a result, the prices of goods will increase and the government will lose trust in the people.
This is true and what many countries are experiencing today when a leader with uncontrollably feelings towards spending and comes into power, all they do is to increase taxes on the general public, which becomes a burden for the people leading to unbalanced costof living among citizens while government officials in power spends expensively without minding that this taxes are taking from the people for the purpose of improving the economy and building a reliable economy within a space of time. Some of this funds are spent on luxurious lifestyle instead of using it for things that helps build the economy to be what it should be.

Perhaps paraphrasing is what I see here because there is no much difference from what I said to this, however in the common man world the government is or are supposed to; but in reality they intent to! That’s the difference, they may say they are trying to raise more funds for the projects that will benefit the masses, yet the intentions are always far from the truth, they then end up spending them on activities that will lead to a hear tensed situation and that would affect the economy indirectly hence indirectly affecting the masses. According to a smart friend he said, the general public pay for the mistakes of few individuals who are for themselves only.

Having higher taxes can be a lot helpful if the government learn to reinvest the revenue well, people will also benefit in return. Rather than borrowing money and increasing the national debt, its a wiser decision to just increase the tax for those who belong in the upper class, while control and adjust the tax for those who are working with low income.
However, higher taxes alone without the cooperation of the government itself will only be a wasted effort. The government should be more disciplined to spend the taxes efficiently and avoid unnecessary spending.

Higher taxes would be a perfect solution if the money was used incredibly well but its the opposite. The money in the hands of the population is ironically more productive and better for the economy and society as a whole. People outrank the government in terms of wealth creation even when we include all the people just wasting money on junk food, somehow people are far better.
If we accept that point is true, its the job of people to ensure government doesn't overspend and doesn't overtax. If they are uncontrolled in their actions then society is drawn into a downward spiral. Some government is ok, some spending is vital and is productive but more is less unfortunately.

I agree. Our government always looks for ways to impose additional taxes to make up for budget shortfalls in different sectors. But that is just their excuse to have a bigger budget for corruption. A large portion of project funds ends up in the pockets of corrupt government officials. They are always overspending on almost everything. Our taxes are even higher than Singapore's, yet they always claim that they are short of budget. That's why different government agencies keep increasing their budgets every year. But just look at SG and PH. The quality of services is worlds apart, even though we pay higher taxes. Less corruption and unnecessary spending are the keys, not imposing taxes on everything.
The CADENA Act is supposed to combat corruption in our country, but it didn't gain enough support. It's not surprising because you can count the number of politicians who aren't corrupt in our country on the fingers of one hand.

There has to be a balance. Certain taxes are needed to enable redistribution to the most disadvantaged members of society. The problem, as things stand, is that these taxes do not flow from the rich to the poor, but from the middle class to the poor. And that certain politicians have an interest in increasing the number of people living in poverty, who then survive thanks to state aid, thereby creating a captive client base of voters.

I believe the real problem is not so much the amount of tax the government takes in. Rather it is whether public expenditure results in tangible gains. But reducing spending will not necessarily bring all the answers if the country has poor revenue generation and/or a high debt burden. There are other balance points involved in these efforts. And governments need to consider them before they start looking at higher taxes as the quick easy answer. Public budgets should be open enough to be visible to citizens so they can identify. Where the money is being spent and what is being accomplished. Any reasonable tax rate can be considered unfair without accountability.

The point is, in countries where the government is dishonest and unable to manage the country, they will certainly continue to raise taxes. However, this is a bad step, because it is essentially a huge burden on the people. So it is clearly not a good solution, because raising taxes will clearly increase the price of all goods in the country, and that will create new problems. So that's why I am also often surprised by the mindset of people in government who are like that. Because currently in my country, the system is like this, where taxes are continuously suppressed, while the minimum wage for the people has not increased at all. So, in my opinion, it is clearly unfair because it is clearly unbalanced. And what annoys me even more, in the country where I live, the natural resources and also the taxes at a normal level would certainly be enough to build everything. But because of corruption, everything is destroyed and that clearly makes me very angry. But yes, what can I do, I am just an ordinary citizen and can not do anything. So, the point is, high taxes and the results are corrupted by people in government are clearly even worse.
