An Indiana woman is facing felony charges for allegedly trying to cheat casino staff by cashing in a winning sports betting ticket despite knowing the winnings were already taken. Luckily, surveillance footage was enough to detect the attempt and prevent the alleged theft.

According to staff, the suspect claimed her earlier companion had given her the ticket to cash, which the winner denied.

In some cases it is possible to know who owns a ticket especially when the won amount is significant but if the land-based casino is big,  it may not be easy to know who owns a ticket. This does not mean that it will be easy to claim another person's ticket, it is even risky to attempt beause one may not know if the ticket have been claimed just like in this case. If another person went their to claim the bet that has already been settled, definitely the betting shop will know about that.

If the ticket was not yet claimed and the amount did not amount to millions, which would attract big attention, she could have succeeded and walked away free. The way agent shops operate in my country, anyone who holds the ticket can easily go claim the winning because the ticket is what proves ownership, and I don’t think those shops' cameras record every player's face enough to know which one played which bet, especially when payments are being made with cash.

It's just a bad day for the woman in question being hit with a big charge that may earn her some few months behind bars, but I think this kind of scenario is mostly associated with land based casino center rather than an online platform and I have heard of a few of such cases within my region where friends steal their friends tickets and go cash out the winning or even the casino or gambling or get shop owner cashes out the win themselves and lie to the real winner that the ticket has expired.

It's just the way the world is today. People trying to take advantage of others mostly those close to them just to get ahead with some amount of money that may not even be well spent.

It's good that the fraudster was apprehended, and I praise the vigilance and the security system of Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City. Nevertheless, it was not only surveillance cameras and human vigilance that should be used to detect criminal activities. Another reason they were able to prevent this crime is that they have a good system for verifying tickets through physical inspection. Blue Chip Casino was able to confirm his identity through its lost ticket process. What I mean is that there should be another means of verifying gamblers' identities without ticket presentation.

If she is found guilty of a Level 6 felony, she would spend up to two and a half years in prison. I think drugs might have led to this criminal behaviour since they found instruments that are usually used to smoke methamphetamine. This is a strange story I most confess, because trying to steal a gambling ticket which has been won is something unusual. Because wining in gambling is something that doesn't come easily and for someone who did not take the risks and burden involved in staking their hard earned money to just steal the wining tickets should be treated with all levels of seriously. The law should take it effects and the appropriate penalities for such acts should be applied, this is theft as she was trying to claim something in false pretense which is against the law.

As Orpichukwu said,  CCTV was not the reason why she got caught, even without the CCTV, there's to way the woman would have received any money from the casino attendant because the system will detect that the ticket has previously been cashed out by another person. The shocker for me in this story is that the woman already knows that the ticket has been cashed already, that's what is written in the OP, and it left me asking, could this woman be an illiterate? I am wondering who won't be able to know that one winning ticket can not be settled twice, except it's a system error which is rare.

There was kind of a similar story before, not in my country though but I found it online, the person was also arrested because they know that he was not the owner of the ticket.

I have never seen how possible this could be, perhaps there is essentiallity for a gambling site to have CCTV cameras.
I mean, physical gambling site should install it on their environment to watch and monitor their activities couples with people who came to place bet on their shops. I think the woman in question doesn’t know how this gambling thing works, if she had known I don’t think she would take a ticket that was already cashed out from the casino,  in an attempt of cashing it out the second time. It’s either she’s not aware that the original owner has cashed it out, or she’s totally a newbie when it comes to gambling.

The fact that she made an attempt to go cash out the money without the permission of the person that own the ticket is enough to treat her like a criminal. This is also the same thing in my country. The person with the original copy of the winning slip owns the bet and he's 100% free to withdraw the money and there will be no case to answer. Perhaps, such reason is why the player in question needs to pay more attention to his slip. Because nobody will be held accountable for his own careless and that's how it is.

Moreover,  most of the centres in my area has no functionable cameras that can aid or support an effective investigation if the need for that occur. Therefore, this why till tomorrow if you can't secure your winnings slips after several toying around with your hard earned money then you're just on your own because even if you fight till next year, your money is gone for good.

Someone can actually claim your winning even till date. For example, in my country an individual can register an agent account in any casino or gambling company (The ones that operate in physical shops and offices not only online).

This means you can set up a space in the name of the host casino as an agent; bettors normally pay into the agent's account in order to place a bet and a ticket will be printed and given to you in return. If you eventually misplace this ticket and someone else has access to this ticket, he can cash out your winning without any body noticing it. I guess this will be only difficult if it is an online casino but if it is not an online casino it is still possible to claim another individual's winning.

In my country, lottery tickets are tied to your phone number, so if you win a prize, you at least get a text message. And when you want to claim a prize (I mean small prizes - I don't know anyone who's hit the jackpot), you get an SMS with a code that proves it's yours.

How did you know that the woman knew that the money won has already be claimed? She may know or she may not know. But one thing that is certain is that the betting slip is not belonging to her. So what she was doing by trying to claim what does not belong to her is thievery.

I haven't experience that before but I have heard similar story like this, but the one I heard is quite different from this one. Because the person doesn't have prove I mean he did not present any ticket as prove, and the reason why he did that is because he was there when the staff was talking about unpaid wining and the wining has been there for 3 weeks and some days so the guy decided to claim the wining, he Said he misplaced the ticket and couldn't find it. In a nutshell he did not claim the wining, why would a lady think of to do such a thing knowing fully well that the wining does not belongs to her, If I were the staff I would get her arrested.
