Hey all. I've been using a few instant swap services over the past year and keep reading nightmare stories about funds getting frozen for months. I'm trying to understand the mechanics before I put anything bigger through one: what actually happens to your deposit on the exchange side, and why do some swaps stall in "review" for weeks while others clear in minutes? If anyone has pointers to good explanations or their own lessons learned, I'd really appreciate it. I mostly swap BTC into ETH and XMR, small amounts so far.

AntiSwap.io - NO AML/KYC EXCHANGER MONITORING

Instant exchanges typically advertise themselves as if they are privacy friendly by saying they don’t require KYC and no account is required. Not asking for KYC upfront doesn’t always mean they won’t later ask for identity verification and source of funds if their AML monitoring service, or that of their liquidity provider, flags your deposit.

To make sure the service you are using to make swaps won’t freeze your funds you have to see if they are listed on directory websites and read their reviews and ratings. Sometimes if you swap through the referral link of the directory, they might guarantee that your funds won’t be frozen or they will at least refund you if they have funds in escrow.

Instant exchanges and no-KYC swap exchanges are kind of same but not entirely, we have no KYC/AML swap exchanges too like B1exch. The website says users can swap up to 10m with no further steps and they also claim no logs.

Op can navigate : https://bitmixlist.org/index.html to find the list of no KYC exchanges and trusted by bitcoincommunity.

what actually happens to your deposit on the exchange side, and why do some swaps stall in "review" for weeks while others clear in minutes?
Regarding the reasons for the prolonged delay in settlement, here are some of the possible causes:
  • they are engaging in selective scamming;
  • your funds triggered their AML screening;
  • the funds are being held by a third party (liquidity provider);
  • they have their own liquidity, but it is insufficient.

My advice: do not exchange a large amount all at once; instead, split it up for example, into 20% increments or less.

Instant swap platforms are fully custodial during processing. Once your deposit confirms, their custodian holds your coins and runs automated chain surveillance scoring. If your inputs share proximity to flagged clusters, their engine halts the swap and freezes funds under KYC demands. To break transaction linkability without counterparty freeze risk, use non-custodial collaborative CoinJoin instead. With WabiSabi protocols like Ginger Wallet, keys never leave your machine, so funds cannot be seized. Ginger’s coordinator filters illicit inputs during registration to maintain clean pool liquidity while charging 0% coordinator fees on amounts under 0.03 BTC with free remixes.

In addition, it's worth mentioning that some of these so-called instant swap services have started to monitor the behavior of users in the past year or two, so if you try to split it up into smaller pieces without breaking the links between the same involved addresses, there's a high chance of getting flagged in your subsequent swaps [apparently, it could count as suspicious behaviour to some of them].

Firstly, I never encountered such an issue before, though I used to use instant swap sometimes, but I prefer trading the coin because I discovered that the fees of swapping a particular coin are higher than when you trade them.

Secondly, it depends on the exchange. Some exchanges lack liquidity, and that could also cause some delays when the amount of funds moving out is higher than the amount of funds coming in. Lastly, it can be a technical issue on the side of the exchange. But the best way to go about it is to use reputable exchanges or write the customer service explaining your problem to them.

Instant exchanges typically advertise themselves as if they are privacy friendly by saying they don’t require KYC and no account is required.
And some of them advertise themselves as non-custodial exchanges too, even though they have full control over the deposit address and the wallet they process payments from.

Instant exchange do not monthly require for kyc the way centralized platforms or exchange through require, that is why we often refer to them as instant exchange or instant swap,
Monthly require for KYC?
Are you saying some exchanges require users to verify their identity every month? Can you please name one?

Also, such exchanges aren't called instant exchanges, because they don't ask their users for KYC. An exchange can ask users for KYC and still be an instant exchange.
The main difference between regular exchanges and instant exchanges is that on regular exchanges, you trade with other users through an order book, while on instant exchanges, you create an swap order and trade directly with the exchange itself.

You’re welcome to the forum and hope you find it necessary to read pinned posts on any board you wish to participate in and be well acquainted with the rules too.

Now let’s get to it.

why do some swaps stall in "review" for weeks while others clear in minutes? If anyone has pointers to good explanations or their own lessons learned, I'd really appreciate it. I mostly swap BTC into ETH and XMR, small amounts so far.

There are 2 different types of swap actions you might take,
Instant swap where the market gets to use current price to set the limits for which you are willing to sell and
Customized limit where you get to define the price at which, you are willing to sell.

In the first instance, you would find people actively buying at the current market price and in such cases, you get your coins swapped at an instant.
In the second scenario, you might have to wait until your price is picked. Pending where you might have defined the price, your coins might stall.

Another reason that might result in this procedure stalling is the coins in question. BTC, ETH and XMR are quite popular and doing okay so, you shouldn’t have much problems with it.

Sorry but what do you mean by saying "exchanges do not monthly require for kyc"? CEX are kyc services who ask for it only one time or when required for activity review. Nothing is in monthly or weekly basis if i am not missing something in the context you used.
Kyc exchanges can also be described as instant exchanges if they instantly proceed orders as the user is exchanging with the platform itself, while regular exchanges can take longer time because users are exchanging between each other.

Op is asking a simple question but has a complicated answer(s). There are many reasons why an exchange that is promoted itself as "Instant" to delay prcessing orders. The frequent reason is that they flag the deposit and ask for kyc verification before processing the order, if they are not scammers.

Have seen several cases of scams that filed his on the forums, after they did instant swaps in large quantities... suddenly stuck waiting for weeks and even months, I think other reasons have been mentioned by some people here.

Or what is meant by exchanges such as Binance, Kucoin, OKX as recipients of these funds must be careful, these exchanges are now strict against deposits from instant swaps.

Also, such exchanges aren't called instant exchanges, because they don't ask their users for KYC. An exchange can ask users for KYC and still be an instant exchange.
How does an instant exchange in requesting KYC to its customers? Is it done through the platform or requested by email to send it?
So far I have not been, but would like to know just the mechanism.

If you read between his replies, the "monthly" was an error. Seems he wanted to say "mostly" but keyboard probably changed it due to autocorrect. He is saying instant swap does not require kyc before you can swap, but if they find your transaction suspicious just like you also said, they may request for kyc before the funds will be unfrozen unlike centralized exchanges that asked for it before you make deposits. This is why he says it's good to read the terms and conditions of such services before you make use of anyone.

I'm not sure why anyone would use an instant swap without doing a test transaction. Ever since I came across a thread where one guy was dragging an instant swap service for his 12 ETH, my trust on those services died immediately. What was even scary about this particular one is that the exchange was a no kyc service but refused to process the output transaction because they suspect the transaction was route through Tornado cash and I'm like 'when did we get here'? Although, they later released the funds after couple of drags but not worth it.

and why do some swaps stall in "review" for weeks while others clear in minutes?
Those that are in review probably have been flagged by the exchanger that it's either dirty funds or came from somewhere that they consider as high-risk.

Otherwise, if it's not about that very reason then that's also a sign that the swap you've used is likely a scam if they're holding your exchange and funds for so long.

There's also a similar thread that's been made just this day: Swapping on smaller instant exchanges — what should I check first?

Are you the same guy but just different in usernames? both are brand new accounts.

Yep exactly, I think OP need to know that just because instant swap doesn't require KYC, doesn't mean they're as decentralized as AMM based swap that purely runs on code. Some instant swap out there are processed through their centralized service, the service itself become market maker unlike AMM pool where everybody can create one and supply liquidity.

Few example of swaps that runs on code are Uniswap, curve, and Thorchain swap. They can't freeze anything and swap happen instantly.

Each exchange can have its own design. One can ask you to create an account, one can give you a link to a third party, and one can ask you to send them your documents through email.

For instance, see this scam accusation against Changenow. They sent the user a link for KYC.

That makes sense, and it might be a good reason to find an exchange platform that explicitly states it does not conduct source-of-funds checks; they usually provide their own verifiable liquidity. However, that doesn't eliminate the hurdle of such checks for the next transactions on other platforms.
