It is very possible for anyone who starts gambling for fun or entertainment to become addicted with time if it turns out to become a habit. I don't think most gamblers start for entertainment. They start gambling with a goal in mind of making profit, as they were told by social influencers and friends that is how gambling works.

What usually lead to gambling addiction is because of guys who are trying to make big profit from betting.  If you treat gambling as a normal entertainment then you won't have issues when it comes to self control and limit.  But in the case of someone who wants to make big profit, they will treat gambling as their only job and all their attention will be into it. Imagine I am a jobless guy,  and I see someone or heard a news that a person won $70k from a casino game. My mind will be filled with all kinds of thought that , this should be easy and I can just put like $2k and walk out with bags full of money . But what they forget to ask is how many losses has the guy had before he luckily won such amount.  So they try betting for the first time, they lose ,try again for like 3 time's and luckily win 1. Now they are having a feeling of proudness, till they keep wining and losing until they exhaust their full money for that day. Since they are already motivated from the news about the guy who won, they will keep betting on more games none stop that they begin to chase losses and wins. So the example I gave is just how addiction begins till it completely takes over someone's mind, where your senses stops functioning properly.  Preventing addiction is far more easier than overcoming addiction.

There are many gamblers who do not become addicted even after being involved in gambling for a long time because they keep themselves involved in gambling only for entertainment and passing time. Basically, winning and losing are not an event, but addicted gamblers do not limit themselves with winning and losing, but if they have money, they will bet.
