Been thinking about the "who sends first" problem when you trade USDT with someone you don't know. The cleanest fix I've seen: a smart contract that locks the buyer's USDT on-chain until both sides confirm everything went fine. If there's a dispute, an arbiter can only split funds between buyer and seller — no way to run off with it. Everything auditable on the explorer.

We're building something along these lines, not live yet. Has anyone here used on-chain escrow when trading crypto with strangers? What worries you most about trusting a smart contract with your funds?

I don't know if Binance has a feature like what you're describing, but they do have an escrow feature on their P2P platform.  In a trade between cryptocurrency and fiat currency, the person with fiat currency is the one to send the money, then tagged that the transaction is paid, and  the seller confirmed that the payment is done by releasing the cryptocurrency.  There is also an option to appeal if the buyer maliciously tagged that the payment was sent even though they didn't.  I believe both parties have the option to appeal and the platform mediate if there is dispute between the parties.

If you must do this make sure it's true peer to peer platform, I am already tired of centralised exchanges pretending to be P2P platforms when they are simply centralised exchanges offering P2P idea.

Go the Hodlhodl route, we have too limited of the likes in crypto space.
Every working P2P right now are mostly centralised exchanges like Bybit, Binance, Mexc, they aren't real P2P..

Their escrow method works wonderfully well, but on these platforms every single users need to pass KYC on before they can use P2P service so how is this even P2P.

Well, for the forums, I don't think you would find much interest. I would say that most people here would rather use an escrow from the forums, rather than an online platform*.

But that aside, what's the plan exactly? what is you're planning to support? every kind of transaction? or you're planning to limit this to SPECIFIC payment methods, or specific things (for example, only currency exchanges, as opposed to also supporting physical goods, digital goods, etc.)

Fair point, Binance P2P escrow works well for what it is. The difference I'm thinking about is custody and KYC — with Binance the funds sit with Binance and you need a verified account. An on-chain contract wouldn't need either: the USDT stays locked in code nobody controls until both sides confirm. Probably overkill for small trades, but for larger amounts with strangers it feels safer than trusting any single party. Do you think most traders would care about the non-custodial part, or is convenience king?

Couldn't agree more on the fake-P2P point. KYC'd 'P2P' on a CEX is just an exchange with extra steps. Hodlhodl's multisig approach is the right spirit — I'm curious how you see smart contract escrow vs multisig? Multisig needs both parties online and cooperative to release, while a contract could auto-release after a timelock if nobody disputes. Different tradeoffs but same goal: no custodian.

Good questions. Starting narrow: currency exchange (USDT/fiat) first, since that's where the 'who sends first' standoff is most painful and the settlement is simple — either the fiat arrived or it didn't. Physical goods get messy fast (shipping disputes, condition claims), and digital goods have their own verification problems, so those would come later if at all. Payment methods: whatever the two parties agree on, the contract only touches the crypto side. Still early though, mostly thinking out loud at this stage.

OP, don't reply to posts one by one, just quote any post you want to reply to in one post.

This violates forum Rule #32.

[TUTORIAL] How To Use Zenland Escrow Service (Web3)
Have you ever heard of Zenland escrow service? This Platform offers escrow with a smart contract feature to release funds after both transactions are approved, I do not know how much interest this platform has, but you need to build a unique idea or at least build a reputation first in the forum to get attention.
