is there any thought keeping some funds 10% in cash.
The problem is that almost 100% of any proceeds from selling forum BTC is capital gains. So selling some just to keep it in cash is extremely tax-inefficient, especially if a lot of forum BTC is destined to eventually be donated to charities (which is not subject to capital gains tax). I think buying a lot of USD would only be a good idea if non-discretionary spending was a lot higher, such that falling BTC prices would be more catastrophic; or maybe if the expected future return from non-BTC assets just became
unbelievably attractive.
Moving the asset holding to regions of zero capital gain jurisdiction
That's not legally possible, at least not in a way that'd make financial sense.
Yes. I haven't looked into the matter closely enough, so I don't have a strong opinion on which would be best. But a 501(c)(3) focused on Bitcoin development like that or Brink would be very good candidates. I'd also love to donate to a 501(c)(3) focused on creating a decentralized, anonymous, censorship-resistant forum, but I'm not aware of a good one working on that.
Tor is too far from the forum's mission, I think, as would be political organizations like the EFF or Coin Center.
Dude you are rich and you are brilliant with diamond hands for the forum.
wish I was 1/50 as good as you are.
I only know what I see. I see about 1100 btc in 2 wallets which you maintained and
legally most likely (95% or higher) you own it.
My suggestion would cost 10% of the coins and insure more than 10 years of expenses to run the forum even if btc dropped to 10k a coin but 8.3 mill would be about 5 mill after tax.
And who wants to give 3.3 mill to the usa government.
It was a suggestion I know usa tax law pretty well and other than giving it away the forum will owe tax bigly one day.
We are now watching crazy ideas of taxing unspent capital gains being tossed around in Europe. It could happen here.
you will likely need to pay 28% fed tax on sale of btc and it is basically full tax.
and the state you are based in could want as much as 13.3% that would be about
.413x8300000=3,427,900 tax or as I wrote 100 btc drops to about 5 million from 8.3
million
it is why I said only do 10 percent of the coins as it would certainly mean you could run the forum easy peasy over the next 10 years for no fear of having to cash out btc in case of a crash.
Many years ago I realized you knew btc value would become really big.
Wish I was that good at it.
One thing I do know is how to play things safe. cashing in 10 or 5 percent for a cash reserve for the forum is playing things safe.
Also it is not complex or hard. and still keeps 90 to 95 percent of the coins intact.
What ever you do is cool by me as you have done well by us.
