From Airdrops to Bitcoin, Where Did Nigeria’s New Crypto Users Go?

Many of us here are already aware that 2026 wasn’t really the year for airdrops . The last real year of airdrops we had was the year 2024-2025 especially 2024 the introduction of telegram mini apps . Then airdrop was booming , I also made good amount from it too . I Doubted it at first until notcoin removed that doubt by actually paying their community (fortunately I was among those that benefited from it).

That year wasn’t just a year of airdrop. That same was a year of green also , which actually inspired most Dev to launched that year . A lot of folks got onboarded into the crypto space through the idea of making money from Telegram mini-app airdrops. So I’m curious, how many of those people eventually moved into Bitcoin and actually learned about it beyond the price?

So far, one thing I’ve learned in this space is that the more you learn and expose yourself to new ideas, the more beneficial it will be for you. Because there are countless opportunities in the crypto space , so you have to be prepared In order to grab them.

Those shitty airdrops only show up during halving because of how market tend to move in the upward direction and they benefit from that.

They don’t when the market is bearish, so expect more by 2027/2028… I’m not sure the ones you’re referring to that made you profits but I’m sure that 90% were dust /eventually became dust and dumped.

Almost 80% to 90% of all those telegram airdrop projects are all dead. Some of the projects were even delisted in must exchanges they were listed then because most of them don’t have any value, they all survived because of the hype and when the hype is no more, they were no where to be found.

Most of the airdrop miners after all these coins gets down, their dream to make money through crypto airdrops died, so they mostly don’t do crypto anymore, they will be there waiting for more opportunities to come with airdrops so that they can come in and make some money; they don’t know the importance of Bitcoin and they can’t afford to learn because they were here die quick money and that’s all, meanwhile Bitcoin investment requires patience.

After a first memecoin launch and then pumps, every other new launch will likely pay dust, one successful memecoin launch follows a long list of altcoins with promising rewards for users who claim, to an extent, they started demanding gas fees before claiming the airdrop.

There were few airdrop that were profitable but it wad just few people that participated on it because these airdrop were among the first airdrop for people to participate in that year but as more airdrop were coming more people were interested to participate but unfortunately it wasn't as profitable as the first set of airdrop and some of these ones were scam airdrop that many regretted for not mining the first set of airdrop and regretted for participating in the late airdrop.

Airdrop are very good because people earn from it and some people sees it as an opportunity to convert it to bitcoin at the end but their are many scam Airdrop especially on telegram and if one is not careful can end up becoming a victims.

Well back then folks were just looking for quick money. I guess not everyone really gets the point of making money through airdrops, just a little do. Like I said if the money you make can't make more money for you then it's probably a liability in most cases because you'll end up spending with no returns. What I mean is that they went in for the easy cash from Telegram mini app airdrops, and once it stopped in 2026, a lot of folks just stopped because they never really built anything from it.That said curiosity often leads to more questions and lots of answers that eventually give you understanding. Best to say folks who took their time to understand Bitcoin's unique nature back then why it's trustworthy how its value came to be, and how decentralization works, e.g. the history of Bitcoin, I believe it must have given them a shift in their point of view by now. During the bulls devs have the upper hands for scams or coins woth no future.

The hype is there, market is booming and with a bit of good marketing the audience are being able to be reached for them to take profits.

During bear these are rarely possible and one noticeable thing is that it is around this period many come into the crypto space thinking of making money quick and oftentimes sticking with crypto trading.
This is the common approach with Nigerians and if things doesn't work they opt for other means like tech, real estate or others.

There are many  people that get to learn about the crypto space through this airdrop. Some of them through the medium were also able  to learn about bitcoin, but  may not actually understand how bitcoin works.
I think the usefulness of this airdrop was that it created an awareness about cryptocurrency . There are people that would have still not know about the crypto industry without this. So, introducing people to the industry is one thing, but it is entirely left for them whether they choose to stay and learn more.

You can actually start investing in bitcoin when you know the basic things and making sure that you have discretionary funds to invest, I know many are still partaking in airdrop project due to the fact that they don't have discretionary funds to start the main investment. But that's not a good reason because if truly they are interested to go into main Investment definitely they will look for a way to create discretionary funds and start investing in bitcoin.

Most of those coins airdropped were all shitty and amounted to nothing and I still have CAT  in my wallet but it's dust as totally as it has always been since its distribution.
It is true that the level of awareness now in the industry much as compared to back then and I believe the airdrop era of 2024 gave crypto the awareness it needed in the country which is a good one and even if airdropped failed it left a good record for bitcoin adoption in the country.

There were airdrops back then that were worth our time but not any more and it's even been very long since I had  of airdrops which is simply a sign that, airdrops are no longer invoke  but I have heard of some casino and gambling sites who still run airdrops in recent times even though I haven't tried it or had the time to try it, I just believe the airdrops of these casinos might just be worth it for those who love to explore airdrops.

Notcoin actually paid their participants including dogcoin airdropped some valuable amounts into their participants wallets and it really made a new wave of overcrowded participants into the space with the new coins that promised airdrops, but unfortunately, after those previous juicy rewards the rest after them were just scam projects and it really had a lot of newbie participants into cryptocurrency space disappointed that many of them lost interest to even think of going deeper into other cryptocurrencies and know more about it.  One thing I understand about this space is that when something that was like an opportunity fails to deliver on it promise, it really gets a lot of newbies a bad picture about crypto being a scam and all of that.

At the initial time when telegram airdrops started,it was all going well as newbie and many experience crypto enthusiasts were interested to see the end result of it. Many were paid by notcoin, dogcoin, holdcoin and a few others which I knew were genuine. After then, the new ones that were launched couldn't pay people exactly the way notcoin, dogcoin and holdcoin did, so alot of people started withdrawing back from them. I myself was even scam by moneydogs as i sent them lots of money in Tons expecting that their coin when launch in exchanges would be worth something valuable. The price was so disappointing and also they locked most of the airdrops so that i won't be able to withdraw them all at once. Since then,i distance myself from anything telegram airdrops because they later turned out to be scams.

Since there are no data that captured how many people that moved into crypto in that period, you can’t actually get the exact number of people that moved into bitcoin. But we can say a handful of them might have moved into bitcoin and remain till this day. Majority of those people came because the airdrops promised free money, even though they were doing tasks to qualify for the rewards. Since most of the airdrops disappointed and disappeared, the newbies got disappointed and left without bothering to learn about bitcoin. Apart from those that benefited from the early airdrops that paid, I don’t think others would have got the zeal to learn about or move to bitcoin especially after their experience with those airdrops that didn’t pay them.

Airdrops isn’t fully gone because I do use to come across many of new airdrops adverts and links on my telegram channels. The popularity of airdrops is fading gradually and over time now it will fade completely but it hasn’t faded yet, and don’t be surprised their are people chasing after this airdrops and keeping track of new airdrops and still participating in them.
I could remember those years where airdrops served as the core of cryptocurrency industry, a lot of new projects were lunched through airdrops and they were making waves and progress because so much attentions and involvement were made on airdrops those years but now it just a history.
