Tinubu's foot soldiers say the 30-day petrol discount is “not a subsidy”, because @taiwoyedele says it.
Funny enough, no where is energy economics determined by nomenclature. An Arab expression days, "𝘼𝙡-ʿ𝙞𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙪 𝙗𝙞𝙡-𝙢𝙖ʿ𝙖̄𝙣𝙞̄ 𝙡𝙖̄ 𝙗𝙞𝙡-𝙖𝙨𝙢𝙖̄ʾ."

“What matters are the meanings/reality, not the names.”

In a layman's language:

Nigeria today does not have a functioning govt-owned refinery supplying NNPCL’s petrol stations. The first question you'd ask the foot soldiers is; what does NNPCL pay for the product, what does it sell it for, and who absorbs the difference?

Internationally, the @IMFNews and IEA examine energy subsidies through the economics of the price gap, not simply whether a govt has a budget line called “subsidy.”

If the Govt/NNPCL acquires petrol at ₦X and sells it to consumers at ₦Y, where Y is below the relevant economic cost, the difference does not disappear because we call it a “discount.” Someone ultimately absorbs that difference. What we should pay attention to is this:

It may not be a conventional budgetary subsidy, but economically it can still amount to a 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝘀𝗶𝗱𝘆, 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝘀𝗶𝗱𝘆, 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿-𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆, or 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝘁-𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲 smoothing, depending on who ultimately absorbs the loss. That is why the govt should be able to tell us four things:

Govt/NNPCL’s actual acquisition cost per litre?
The applicable international/reference price? The actual price paid by beneficiaries?.
Who ultimately bears the difference?

If the numbers show that there is no govt compensation, no NNPCL under-recovery, no foregone revenue and no other entity absorbing the shortfall, then strong'y, Taiwo can call it simply a commercial discount. But if somebody is absorbing the difference, changing the name does not change the economics.

So the question is not simply:

“Is this a subsidy?” I think what we should ask is:  “Who is paying for the discount?”.

Why didn't the govt see the need for this "discount" from May 2023 to date? Why now that the opposition has exposed the govt that we can actually re-introduce a kind of subsidy? And after the 30 days, what next?

Shame suppose catch you small, though we know you're shameless.

Nobody is paying for the discount and that's why they aren't calling it a subsidy, I don't like it, you don't like it, that much we can agree on but sometimes we really need to stop pushing our own narrative in order to make something suddenly seem like what it's not, at the moment we don't know how much of a discount they are going to give but the fact that it will only happen at NNPC pump stations already creates a problem, what about the private stations? If you want to complain then that's what you complain about.
Then there is the talk about buying fuel for 1400 today and tomorrow is better then buying for 1500 today and 1300 tomorrow, there is a logic behind it if you really look at it but then we need to understand that Nigerians don't see things that way and the government just ignored that part, if fuel sellers like Dangote sell at a loss now that the price of fuel is high it will seem like they are doing the people a favour but that loss doesn't just go away because when the price of fuel comes down Dangote will keep selling at the same price to recover his losses, when that time comes every Nigerian will expect fuel to sell for let's say 1000 but fuel will still be sold for 1350, the idea might look good to the government now in their attempt to make life easier but once the price of fuel actually goes down but it doesn't reflect in the market then they will understand ehat they've done to themselves and to Nigerians.

Yesterday is history, Tomorrow is a mystery, but Today is a gift, That is why it is called PRESENT!!!

This is a clueless government they don’t know what they are doing, they are confused, running from pillar to posts without direction. I was surprised when I saw the news that subsidy is back for 30 days. Is that not a mockery to his government that announced that the subsidy era was gone. Why now, what suddenly changed that the 30 day subsidy became necessary. Nigerians should wake up this is the right time to change this government.

If we can survive the hard time of fuel subsidy, we do not need their fuel. Because of them I will be looking for NNPC fuel station to buy cheap fuel? I am not going to do that if I am in Nigeria. No need for the government to give us any discount that some people will only use to get money into their bucket. Who know if this is 2027 election move.

Does it means the federal government don't know what to do and because they know elections is by the corners they are now re-introducing fuel subsidy for a period of 30days, how will this discount help Nigerians and why was it not introduced earlier before now?, it's very shameful that Tinubu's government has lost direction and they are now running from pillar to post trying to make Nigerians see reasons to vote them in for a second tenure because that's what the fuel discount is aimed at and Nigerians are more wiser now except few who still wants to be slaves.

So after this proposed 30 days of discount we will still go back to buying fuel at a higher price?, is that not stupidity and lack of leadership vision to the people, it's very obvious that this government is incompetent and not worthy of leading. Instead of giving discount for 30 days it's better we remain the way we were than few days of fuel subsidy.

One month discount is funny to me and look at the time that the government is giving the discount. Something that the government will take back during the festival period because it's a norm that the government extorts us with hike in fuel price during Christmas celebration. What about the people living in the places that doesn't have NNPC filling station, are they part of this discount. This is a shameful move LOL.

I think this present government lead by Ahmed Tinubu think they can play on the intelligence of Nigerians. Immidiately he assumed the presidential seat, the first thing he did was to remove fuel subsidy, and that marked the beginning of Nigeria economic instability, and several moves, and protest have taking place, and he refused to give attention to the needs of the masses. Today, he has seen the need to remove price from petrol for one month as if that is going to solve the problem of Nigeria. He is doing it because the 2027 election is fastly approaching. Honestly, am highly disappointed in this present government lead by Ahmed Tinubu, and they have no plan for the growth of this country, and sas well as the citizens all they want is to satisfy themselves, and not Nigerians.

They're really funny,  what's discount here, Mr president met fuel at the rate of 400 naira and removed fuel subsidy now fuel is 1600 per litter,  now the president because of pressure and campaign has given discount of 1300 for one month,  that's a joke, this government can actually make life easy for us, but they are playing with our future,  that's how wicked they are, they know what to do but won't do it, because they like to see us suffer.

The only thing that will make the difference is if he make fuel go back to 400 as he met it, Tinubu and his Governors has nothing to offer for us, we should try to vote him out come 2027, he's old and lack ideas to give Nigerians the desire Change. We need fresh air and brain.

What will be the price of fuel since the subsidy has been added? The cost of fuel differs according to state and environment you are in, as of last, when i bought fuel, it was around N1400 per litre, with the subsidy, will the price go down to N1100 per litre?

What discount do you mean? Everything done turn scatter scatter, nothing they work, election madness.

Everything this government does is strategic, the Tinubu 30 days fuel discount is because elections are fast approaching and they’re now running out of ideas to manipulate the people after they failed with their previous campaign promises of reducing fuel price to the barest Minimum. It was this same fuel price that this very APC government uses to campaign against Goodluck Jonathan, and they successfully drove him out of office promising us that they will reduce fuel price to 200Naira but what are we seeing today in their government, fuel price is 5 times higher than what they met it.

They can call it whatever they want, it's all to them.

We are Nigerians, and we know our plight, and that's the government, the APC government to be precise.

If they like, let them take the fuel price back to #200 tomorrow, or better still give everyone free fuel for the proposed useless 30 days, or even till the end of the year, it makes no difference anymore to anyone, except for his faithfuls and beneficiaries.

You can't starve a child for one week and give him a full chicken the next Monday and expect him to trust you or praise you. No way.
They have over stayed there welcome at Aso Rock, and it's time they leave already. I just hope the Ballot speaks rightly this time.

This is the problem with this set of leaders, the Tinubu led government. They don't think, they don't calculate at all.

How can you take away something so special to a Nation since you entered office. You watched them suffer all these 3-4 years, and it wasn't your problem. You increased there hardship, hunger, death and everything bad. And now, it's few months to general elections, and all you can come up with as a good strategy is to reduce fuel price for a month? This is very laughable.

It's very clear, they have lost control, even Nigeria they have also lost. Because the masses already know it's just a political deduction. Does it even make any change?  Oh! If only votes were counted, and elections free and fair.. if only..
