On the 26th of September 2026, severe flooding that rendered so many people homeless, destroyed lives and properties happened in Rivers State especially Port Harcourt, i was also affected. A Nigerian adage says when two elephant fights the grass suffers, the political fight in Rivers State has rendered the sitting government incapacitated, they are not taking care of the state. A whole capital of Rivers State experienced flooding because the roads that were constructed do not have good drainage system. Aside that there is no sanitation, even the market women pour their waste and garbages into the drainage system that are available therefore clogging the surviving drainage system. The canals and waterways have not been dredged and clear since this political toggle started. Areas like Eneka, Rukpokwu, Rumuokoro, Oyibo just to mention a few is still flood till today as i am making this post because of the ring road that was poorly constructed, lives have been lost, properties damaged, thousand of houses in flood and thousands of people homeless. Yet, the sitting administration is quiet about all this.

You are right. Only Deputy Governor Prof Ngozi Odu came to visit Emeka and Rukpokwu on 30th September and they started giving 200k to victims, but what can 200k do for a man whose house is destroyed whose properties worth millions lost? My environment was affected too, this is not politics, this is suffering of common man. We pay tax, we vote, but when we need government, government is fighting itself. Our Rivers State Government, Ministry of Works and Education should wake up. Desilt all drainage, dredge all canals, stop building on waterways and sanction those dumping refuse inside drainage. And please they should complete the Ring Road with proper environmental impact assessment. Because if this rain continues like Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) predicted that Rivers is on highest risk alert, next flooding Will be worse than this. Rivers people are suffering. We need help not political fight.

Who told you those properties are destroyed? What the owners of those affected properties need to do is to hire water pumping machines, channel the hose to a drainage and pump out the waters into the drainage. The process might take more than six hours but the water will surely dry up. I believe the 200k which the deputy governor gave out to victims who were affected by the flood wasn't a compensation from the government but rather it was from her personal purse. We have agencies that are assigned to handle flood matters such as NEMA (National Emergency Management Agency), SEMA( State Emergency Management Agencies and LEMC Local Emergency Management committee. So even as the deputy governor was there to compensate victims from her personal purse, these agencies would also be contacted by the state government for emergency intervention.

The way you guys are saying the deputy Governor gave money, did you confirm it? Or it was just a political propaganda. I was affected by the flood and we didn't receive a dime from any deputy Governor.

That’s exactly why people need to verify information before spreading it. If the deputy Governor truly provided financial assistance to flood victims, there should be credible evidence and clear records of who benefited. Your experience raises a valid question, especially if you were directly affected and received nothing. We shouldn’t accept every political claim as fact without proper confirmation. Who actually received the money, and where is the evidence?

You can see vividly the harm of having godfather in politics, it has landed the state and the sitting governor incapacitated because he is carrying out the instructions of his boss and he is not allowed to govern by himself. I think the people has contributed to the cause of the flood in the state because they have built houses on water ways and blocked all the canals by dumping waste into it and the water couldn't find his way and offcourse it will always find it's way that's why we are experiencing flood, businesses were shut down and children couldn't go to school, you could just see how severe it was.from the pictures. I heard on the news that the Rivers State Government went to visit those affected and gave them some money so they could use and sort out themselves, it's a commendable one but they should look for solutions on how to construct canals and clean up the once that has been blocked so there won't be a repetition of it in the near future.

Some persons on this post are claiming that those affected by the flood were compensated, which is a big lie because i and my family and all the people in my estates and surrounding my estates more that 100 houses was affected which connotes that more that 1000 persons were affected and yet i and my neighbours living at Eneka did not receive any compensation. Personally and those of us that are permanent resident around the flooded areas don't even want monetary compensation but a permanent solution to this pandemic.

Flood is a natural disasters but i believe the recent one in the treasure base of the nation is actually caused by human being, ph is not been taken care aa before most of the drainage in the town has been block by waste bin, some other channels where water use to go through has been built houses all over while some pit also where water use to enter haa been cover with sand and build houses on it. I believe it's better when looking for a house to rent in ph to be done during rainy season to know the bad and the right place to stay.

But why are we so much interested in the compensation when what we should be talking about is how we can get a lasting solution to this problem at hand. That is our problem as Nigerians, always running after rat when our houses are on fire. If these people in power were doing what they are there for all this wouldn't have been happening at the first place. Personally and those of us that are permanent resident around the flooded areas don't even want monetary compensation but a permanent solution to this pandemic.
That is just what I was expecting to hear and not the other way round. Moreover, how much are they even giving out that can be equivalent to what people are going through in this period. Because the government that I know too well wouldn't do anything that will be of interest to the masses, but only for theirselves alone. However, if there's anything thing that should be done to help the situation, then let it be something that can fix it once and for all.

The societies today is built with politics which I will not dispute that, but not all that is been course by godfather, personal search in my domain where I formally reside it's some citizens not taking action against illegal act by fellow citizens to call the attention of government, some of our water ways or water channels are been blocked by humans refuge and some been reclaim and built with houses without proper water channels to drained this water when capillary action take place, today individual develop eve some reserve land by government without seeking the approval of government agency for urban development and approval on how such area could be , that is problem on it own because even the government find it difficult to pulled down existing structure to create water ways and pay damages, many things is the reason why some people faces this challenge of flood without government intervention, imagine where people build on top drainage some sand fill canals, and rivers State is. Made of many Creek and most citizens have sand filled those creek without construction of canals to drain the water government and citizens have their portion of blame though godfather ism is a dangerous thing in a developing nations or society because it's a setback to nation that practice it.

Unfortunately, the Rivers state west management agency have never lived up to their task when it comes to ensuring that rivers state is at least clean to a reasonable degree. as a matter of fact, even during the period of Wike, rivers state remains one of the dirtiest state in the federation because both the citizens of the state and the body that is in charge of west management are not doing the right thing. Is it the governor that pours his west on the water channels? has RIWAMA ever complained of non payment of salary? if they are adequately paid, why are they not doing enough? The people have always contributed greatly to some of the problems in the society but somehow, they have always found a way of shifting the claim to the government since the government on their own part have been long associated with failure.

I agree with you that the recent flood is caused by humans as most of them have made the drainage to be there dumping ground, they throw all sorts of things inside the drainage thereby blocking it and I also think the government contributed to it with the recent construction of the ring road without any proper drainage has also made water not to have any where to flow to and you just said something very important, the best time to look for house is during rainy season because I saw some houses flooded and people's properties was inside, most person's couldn't even enter their street because of how flooded their street was. I still don't even know how they will tell mostly the market women to stop throwing plastic, their market refuse and shop owners to stop dumping refuse inside the drainage because they too are the problem, we blame the government for their own but human being will never learn to keep the drainage free.

The River State government shared palliative to the neighborhood affected by the flood. I received mine because my area was affected by the flood. The River State government is doing a lot to curb the situation. Not every problem has to be blamed on the government. The flood is caused by geographical reasons, followed by a poor drainage system.
