Consumers may prefer secondhand items for many reasons, but the main reason among them is saving money (a lack of money to buy new ones). I think this is so obvious that there’s no need to even think about it.

No matter how some people may try to sugarcoat it the actual reason why a lot of people decide to go for things that are less in price is because that's what they can afford. Everyone knows the value of getting something and it's definitely worth having. Most secondhand products don't last that long because they have already been used and completely worn out. If everyone was financially capable no one would go for that.

Money always has a way it brings true color of people, I mean its unusual an average person with money will want to go down with a product that has been used before, it's gong to be an insult to your it personality to want to use a second hand item. If there is money, they will buy a product that has never experienced any used before. However, I just think people will justify their reasons to cover up and gives excuses as to why they like a used product.

If not for a bad economy, who would preferred a used clothes, an accidental car that is not fit to be on the road. Some second hand products are even harmful for use than not using them, but most countries don't care about the integrity of what's imported to their countries. As long as they are getting paid through customs and taxes are generated, they are good to go.

Although to me secondhand property is not a bad thing if someone decide to chose it over buying a new one. .but where I think it will be a problem is when you can't stop it again. Like I have said on different places on this forum that life is very addictive so we have to be careful with our decision otherwise it will become part of us that we can't control. This habit has made many people chose secondhand property even when the are rich or have the available money to afford the new one.

This is the kind of question that will have many answers, but also many of those answers will be incorrect because people like to use subjective opinions or try to validate their false decisions. There are many reasons why people engage in secondhand products, but the primary reason is probably going to be the economics. If everyone was rich like Elon Musk, then only very limited number of ideologically prone people would buy such products. Not that this kind of scenario is economically possible, but I am trying to show a point here. There are probably some surveys about that, but that would be my primary guess and then other reasons could be related to ideological views.

Now we also should make a difference between where does buying secondhand products make objective sense and where is it a mistake. Let's consider 2 clear examples that are different from each other. For cars it is always clear, buying a secondhand car is almost always better. To buy a fully new car you pay a huge premium for nothing at all, for a bad attempt at filling a sad hole in your heart with a machine where you can buy the same machine 6, 12 months or a bit older at a big discount from the new one. These kinds of moves do not work, but buying a secondhand car is a bit more difficult but rewarding. The other thing would be a phone. It depends a lot, but if you are a cryptocurrency user and will install some wallets on such a phone I would never recommend that. It is better to go with a cheaper phone or to save money longer but to avoid a secondhand product in this case. A good phone, when used correctly can last more than 5 years. It is a good investment. The savings on a secondhand phone do not outweigh the risks that it brings for such a user. Always try to be objective where it makes sense to go secondhand.

I grew up around someone who always preferred second hand tools and machines even down to shoes and the reason was because to him, for someone to use a product and it lasts long and then he wants to sell it, it shows how durable and good the product is. I mean that's the narrative and also we never threw anything away, there was always a use for something.
As I grew older, I could understand that asides the *durability test*, cost of things also went into that decision making and I can't really blame anyone, I mean the way the economy is, if someone decides to buy secondhand and clames he likes, who are we to judge..
By all means I'm 100% certain than brand new is better and will always outlast second hand (I'm not referring to brand new fake products), like the original product (brand new) is better than same product (second hand).

You are right because judging from my experience I think second hand vehicles are the ones higher number of persons purchases more than new ones but however the reason why they always go for the second hand use is not actually because they don't see value on the knew ones but due to the amount it will cost them and what they could only afford because since second hand car is something that has been use for years by the owner it will no longer be sold on a higher prices because the market value has dropped but when it comes to new vehicle that has not been use the price could sometimes double the second hand cars six times more.

Purchasing of second handed products speak loud of a system that is bereaved of manufacturing facilities, which means they are a more of a consumption society than a production one.

Ordinarily we can talk about how cost saving second handed products could be specially when they can serve same purpose as brand new one. But in societies where much of the things they utilises are majorly produced and manufactured in their country not only will people not have less interest in purchasing second handed things but the brand new would be relatively affordable with how they are in mass production.

There're alots of reasons why people choose to buy secondhand items, some purchase secondhand items because they can't afford thec new products unlike vehicles. Most people purchase used car to save money, avoid some standard lose and also a better feature and reduce the allocation. Buying second hand items are not advisable because we don't know how the previous owner used these items before deciding to sell them. The most common reason why people sell second hand items is if the thing develops faults on a regular basis and if the persons are in urgent need of money. In machines, buying second hand machines are bad. Most people don't do maintenance on their machines. Buying those machines will make us spend more when they start developing issues.

Years ago, I didn't have enough money to buy a new car, so I ended up purchasing a used one. That was, of course, a huge mistake. I had to sink a significant amount of money into it just to get it running properly and fix major defects and breakdowns. All of this had a direct impact on safety—something I wasn't really thinking about at the time, as I just wanted a car so badly. Later, I realized I shouldn't do that again, because I was putting not only myself but also my family and others at risk. Apart from the money issue, some people buy secondhand items because they're into antiques or collecting, like the member above mentioned Tbh, aside from those two reasons, I can't  think of many other convincing reasons to buy used rather than new.

I  did some digging and found that some people also choose secondhand item for environmental reason . Since it helps reduce waste and saves the resources to make new products. Sounds reasonable, but I am not sure if it is really a major motivation for them . What do you think?

Antiques are something a bit different. Because antiques can’t be new. Although nowadays you often come across so‑called "Chinese antiques" - they’re all new , because they’re fakes (for example, coins, and other things). Where fakes are less common is in secondhand books. And it’s not customary to classify collectible and antique items as secondhand.

PS I’ve never met anyone who buys secondhand items for environmental reasons. Maybe Greta Thunberg does that?

I think the stigma on refurbished products needs to stop. Not only does it save a lot of money, it is really good for the environment since every time a new product is made it produces so much trash and other waste products, which we then breathe in our air and drink in our water.

The example you gave- vehicles is a good one. Why would I buy a new car if I can buy a used one with low mileage? Or even medium mileage for half price?

There is multiple reasons, this happened to be global issue, it is as result of many nations economy, resources and individual choice, no personality that is able to afford brandnew items will make a choice of second hand except the person are having some difficiency or lack the knowledge of how the brand works and it's advantage as well the disadvantage of second hand items. Human is full of needs and wants, many need will require argent attention where the need can't be meet alternative to the need become the choice provided the purpose is achieve at the moment where it's needed. Reason also include fake products adulterated fake products where many who falls victim of not getting original of what they need resulted to going for second hand products that is original as it last longer than the new product which is fake, an so many reasons.

Yes, many people always have this mindset, and I think it's the poor people who are more interested in these second-hand things. Although I think it's just a matter of decision, because there are people who are not even wealthy enough, yet they still don't want anything second-hand at all, because they know that in less than no time it will start giving them issues. Honestly, there is nothing better than buying new stuff for yourself, no matter what account you buy it for, because you will definitely have peace of mind for a very long time without any problems. Even though there is a lot of imitations in the market right now, we can never compare second-hand and brand new stuff.

I don't think it's only the poor people who are more interested in second hand products because even rich people prioritize second hand car spare parts when they are fixing their car, and the funny thing about second hand products is that they are more costly than brand new products that have not be used by anyone. Buying brand a new product is the best since it can stay for years before it will start developing fault you can easily detect what the problem is.

If you check very well, you would understand that I mentioned "decision". Which means that rich people can also go for second-hand products, so it is not only for the poor people along, because human beings are not always the same.

Just like they normally say, "one man's food is another man's poison" that is the simple truth about it, because it all comes down to a decision which one else can easily make for another person. But the truth still remains that a brand-new product is more reliable, nothing more than that at all.

Some used products are of high quality there is no doubt about that, but this doesn't really apply to every product, when dealing with things like gadgets I would not recommend that you make use of such because they can be very faulty. I remember a friend of mine buying a fairly used laptop from China only for it to end up crashing within a few months of using it, even in China no every used products are good. Your reasons for preferring used items is quite understandable but some products aren't really good for such.

I won't disagree with all point made it's the primary purpose of many going for second hand mostly cars which value can still serve the same purpose of conveyance, they see second hand products as close substitute to their needs which their money can afford at that particular time . Second hand products is not band for instance some properties like building could be seen as second hand some occupant sell their houses after residing for some time but can't afford to stay due to one or two challenges buying such property is still second hand products but satisfied the value and the need of the person in need some time it could be cheaper as the person is seriously in need and may need argent buyer who may not pay according to what the property is valued at that particular period of time, in my opinion some go for it because it's cheaper mostly the product they are selling option price or emergency which Price drop as resulted to it's need by the seller.

There are situations where a used product is a better deal than a new one. For example if the value added tax is high ("only" 22% in Italy), buying a nearly new product lets you save that 22% plus a small discount which is not bad, because instantly you save between 25% and 30% of the total new price. Then you have to assess who used the product and whether they took good care of it but you can see that when you are considering a purchase: look at their living situation and how they maintain the things around them.
You rightly take the example of a car there are people who sell cars with 30k/50k kilometers on them that are practically new, those are real bargains.

This is the first time I hear that used stuff is more durable and lasts longer than new. Lol.

You gotta understand that every product has lifespan and wears down over time. Electronics especially. Their components degrade, and risk of something breaking goes up after years of use.
Just because a used item still works fine does not mean it's more durable than a new one. It just has not broken down yet.
