The US government spent $2.7 trillion on healthcare last year, which expenditure includes the annual $500 billion health care receives in federal tax preference, leaving other sectors on a low budget. Economists on tax foundation believes that such loophole should be closed to reduce more borrowing by the government to fund a single sector massively, leaving other sectors with smaller budgets. From the chart below you'd notice how healthcare consumes more federal spending than all other sectors combined. Why is it so?

Well we can agree that when it comes down to the real importance of life your health comes paramount. You could have lots of problems like finances, relationship, transport or what ever when you just get one serious health problems that becomes your most important problem every other thing takes a sit. Although I am not supporting the fact that other sectors are suffering but a government should find a balance but still not compromising on any efforts made towards the healthcare sector.

Isn't this how it should be? I'm no expert, but I think health care should be one of the least taxed sectors of any country, and it should be heavily subsidized too. Heavy taxes on the health care sector will lead to more expensive products and services because the people running the business will need to make profit to continue operating. The health care sector in the US is relatively high enough.
When you consider that about 58% of hospitals in the US are non-profit, the numbers will begin to make sense, especially since only about 24% are for-profit and the federal, state and local government community hospitals also don't pay taxes. If the government wants to cut costs, I don't think the health care sector is what they should be looking at.

Healthcare in America is broken and dysfunctional because politicians are complicit in allowing the public to be ripped off decade after decade. The affordable healthcare act tried to make small steps towards fixing that by replicating successful healthcare systems that operate in other parts of the world without this "insurance" bullshit that is incredibly manipulative. Improving the healthcare outcomes for all should be a key target of the government and those who are rich would still be able to pay extra for better options if they choose. So many American's have been conditioned into this believing this sick and oppressive system is the only way, even going so far as pushing back on political parties that try to make laws to fix it. Lobbying is one of the major problems in the USA, because the most abusive companies generating massive piles of cash plow it back into politicians purely to buy themselves even more advantages while the average person suffers. Getting medical treatment should not be a luxury, it should be a basic human right without ridiculous fees that actually compound the problem.

The U.S government takes lesser tax on healthcare sector since the ww2 era which was as a result to solving a temporary economic problem for employers but since then till now, it stuck and since nothing has been done about it, it continues to affect the budget of the country from my understanding with the healthcare insurance policy that seems to favor only the working class and mostly the leaders who have a huge stake in many of the businesses running in the country.

Knowing in comparison how low the agric sector is on a budget shows an unexpected gap, it'll be rarely sustainable to have the agricultural sector on a low budget compared to the health sectors when it's of big contribution to people's health. If a food and drug producing source is not spent so much on, it's not clearly understandable why the high gap in expenses on health sectors against other sectors, despite a heavy reliance on debt.

It differs per country and this is with US, they have massive population and I think that the pandemic outbreak have made this decision to cover more with the health sector for its expenditures. A huge chunk of the budget probably goes to the insurances as well that's being taken care of. That's why in hospitals, they won't just admit people without asking if they are covered by an insurance or not. While I agree that the agriculture sector must be given attention for the food security but I think, with vast lands of the USA, they are already self sustaining and doesn't need to put that much in it compared to our country where we are an agricultural country and yet we still import food.

Get your health sector taxed too high and have accessibility to health care very expensive. The choice is yours as a government!
It's a common sense not to raise the tax there for a well meaning government because it would encourage innovation and access for lower earners. In many third world countries the reason many people can't access good health care isn't due to problem of fewer health facilities only but because the health care is expensive and the average salary earner can't really afford it. Every reasonable society wouldn't see the healthcare sector as an area to financially stress for revenue creation.

The pie chart is confusing me, why the box for health is bigger, with higher percentage of 43% and you call that smaller tax, from the chart you could tell that transportation sector has the least percentage of 0.2% of taxation, why is that, or am I reading it wrongly?
If that's the case, health sector is wealth, when health is shattered, then the free access to get treated and taken care of at first sight is guaranteed, as that's the step n the united states of America.

The government's main responsibility is to protect its citizens. This includes healthcare as well as security. A lot of money is spent every year on public health. I think one of the biggest differences between the US and developed European countries is how much they allocate to healthcare. It's good to see the US making progress in this area. They've started looking at the right countries as examples. They'll reach the next level when they can make healthcare completely free. Compared to defense spending, healthcare spending is a very small amount.

I believe this comes in the context of when people say health is wealth to judge the situation. I think the main reasons why healthcare gets such tax preferences and federal spending in the US are because health is wealth. Aside from that, we have some people who on medication but barely have the needed funds to settle their health condition. So, the use of the combination of historical policy choices, demographic pressure, and political difficulty is used to reforming the healthcare system expenditure every year.

No, healthcare beats military spending by a lot, last year defense spending was at about 13% of the entire federal budget, while health care surged to 31.2% of the whole federal budget. Federal expenditure allocated to Medicare and Medicaid in 2025 was twice the size of the defense budget.

This is a wrong interpretation. I think there's one more distinction that you're overlooking here, because the $2.7 trillion you said the government spent was not actually all direct spending, as that figure already includes more than $500 billion in federal healthcare tax preferences. That $500 billion is not money collected by the government, so it cannot be counted as direct government spending. It represents tax revenue the government chose not to collect, largely due to tax preferences for employer-sponsored health insurance. So it's misleading to say that the government actually spent the entire $2.7 trillion on healthcare.
So, it's clear that to balance things out, the government will have to raise healthcare taxes to keep things running smoothly.
This is misleading. Taxes even gets lowered. That picture says favorable.. how can being favored resulted to making them pay high taxes?

From the chart below you'd notice how healthcare consumes more federal spending than all other sectors combined. Why is it so? That's because healthcare costs in America are incredibly expensive. As I know, medicines are twice as expensive there as in other developed countries. So, it's clear that to balance things out, the government will have to raise healthcare taxes to keep things running smoothly. There are other factors that influence this as well. But I'm not too surprised by this. If I'm not mistaken, I've also seen a video showing a man robbing a bank to go to prison and get access to free medical care. That explains how expensive it is to be without insurance in America. So, yes, even though America is a developed country, it still has its pros and cons. Of course, not everything is free, even though America is a super-developed country. So, we should be grateful to be in a country that can guarantee our health.

I read somewhere that this idea of $500 billion tax expenditure started with second world war. During that time wages were restricted so employees started to pay health insurance as a part of wages, untaxed but then it was legalized in 1954 by US and now removing it will affect employees, hospitals and unions that benefits from the current system so its a kind of historical decision rather than a planned policy to support healthcare system.

So it's misleading to say that the government actually spent the entire $2.7 trillion on healthcare.
The exclusion of taxes on employer sponsored health insurance, reduced federal income tax revenue by $279 billion, and payroll tax income revenue by $171 billion, just last year. When the government doesn't tax the industry it heavily spends so much on, the money left behind for the sector in taxes is calculated to get the the total federal expenditure for the year.

That's what I'm saying, so we should not assume that the government is spending that huge amount of money directly on healthcare because it isn't. A large portion of that figure represents tax benefits related to employer-sponsored health insurance, which result in lower tax collections for the government.

The health care solves a major problem that pertains to life and death so should receive the most preferential treatment. It could be that there are other reasons too considering how expensive the health care cost is, and the purpose it serves.
Also, some health are facilities are government funded and less tax payments allocated to the health care does not mean "no payment" because there are still private payments aside the government funded payments.

I am no expert when it comes to the US federal budget spending and the US healthcare system. My humble opinion is that the US healthcare system is absurd. Healthcare in the US is crazy expensive for the people, but the US government keeps spending insane amounts of money in order to fund a profit-driven system. The obvious answer to this is lobbyism. The "healthcare mafia" or "Big Pharma" has lots of political influence in the US, so they can get away with anything.

Donald Trump promised during to campaign to solve all these but he didn't as usual from every other typical political class who projects into office and power. The spending on medicare can not be compared to what to spend on defense budget brother. Look at the ammunitions and weaponry exported to the middle east prior to the unnecessary war with iran, that should be the clue you follow.
