It shows the proportion of identified Bitcoin owners associated with specific wallets, and they make up 45 percent. The majority are exchanges, ETFs, and custodians. But the owners of the other portion are unknown, they are simply unlabeled addresses.
For me, this "unidentified" nature is part of the concept of decentralization.
I understand that the largest of these wallets are monitored by alert bots, and the overall ratios will fluctuate greatly. But overall, I'm surprised that the depths of our Bitcoin ocean are still so murky.
Bro, this is not a big deal to me because the majority is still in the unlabelled category. While the labelled category, which is around 45%, looks very big, to be honest, you have added labelled and Patoshi coins to it too. In the second category, the majority are people like us. We own coins distributed all over the world.

The majority are still individuals, and these managers and custodians are not investing their own money. They are just managing your funds. So if we go deeper into this sea, we will find that in the first labelled category, many are still individuals holding coins and making their moves, but overall, in such comparisons, they are not counted as individuals. This must worry them because they are counted as companies, not as individuals.

For a start, Bitcoin is supposed to be decentralized, self sovereign and independent that the next person shouldn't tell how much or even if you own Bitcoin, but these days due to CEX and kyc requirements and other systems built to debase anonymity we can even draw up such a statistics to show ownership, which isn't the original goal if I may.

It's funny how the U.S government sits right in the stat not because they bought Bitcoin but from seized and confiscated Bitcoin that became theirs, but the stat is incomplete because other countries own Bitcoin and some even use it as a legal tender and should be on the stat too.

On a more serious note, it's not a bug in chain analysis but one of the core features of self custody that makes some unlabeled supply unknown and that's how it should be, after all, other investments like gold don't get labeled as this and am sure it's because of institutional adoption that this statistics puts a spotlight on Bitcoin ownership, else, a sound practice of self custody would reveal absolutely nothing.

That is excluding how much Bitcoin held in Know Your Customer custody can be linked to Bitcoin not directly attributed to some body on the Blockchain.  I can imagine analysis companies have an accurate answer for at least half of the 55 percent of Bitcoin not attributed.  The UTXOs that can seriously not be linked to any real identity are probably a very small minority.

That data imply that traditional finance people are going to build profiling tool because no matter where they are be it on their own company or in a decentralized blockchain, they simply have the urge to know what other people are doing and what they are doing it for!, smh.

Will only get worse in 2027 when countries will start exchanging CARF data, it's not overstatement to say 95% owner will be identified by 2027 (not counting lost coins) because big volume crypto countries are already committed for the exchange.

It's even alarming that it has reached that level since the 45%, although still a minority, includes institutions that are catching up, they are buying Bitcoin to potentially dominate the market in the future. What was once pseudonymous, I'm afraid we might not fully enjoy that privacy in the future if we are forced to use centralized systems to exchange our Bitcoin, governments are doing everything they can to make it operate more like a bank, and they are undermining the nature of decentralization with their centralized regulations.
With the rate at which institutions are investing, the number might increase in the future. Bitcoin ETF providers are engaging in aggressive advertising to gain more market share. I am sure that no matter how hard governments and other centralized institutions try, a good number of Bitcoiners will never use Bitcoin is a centralized form.

I really love how OP still shows how people think of Bitcoin, and in real life it is a good reflection. Dark ocean, really? Do you know how the world has even darker things happening with billions and trillions of dollars? Not Bitcoin, banks. I bet you it is still not known by everyone who owns an even bigger portion of world wealth.

Stop messing with BTC man, pay attention to the real dark things hidden around you.

If 55% of the holders are still undecided, many of them may have been holding Bitcoin but may have lost the security phase of the wallet because they did not understand the importance of Bitcoin. Again, there are many investors whose investments did not enter the wallet a second time after holding. So whether these investors are alive or dead is also unknown to us. We basically do not know about Satoshi, the creator of Bitcoin, whether Satoshi is alive or dead or whether he is an alien or a living person on earth is completely imaginary or unknown to us. And what else do we know about the other investors?

No Know Your Customer platforms will boom by then, so will Monero.  Unless the World is going full Orwell style, making Internet only available under digital identities, which I am sure we will still manage to find a way to avoid.  At least temporarily.

Adding all these up in my mind, I am not even afraid of these data harvesting and sharing regulations, they were kind of easy to predict, but I am afraid of what the World will become when countries will all join together to lead this full on dystopia.

For me, this "unidentified" nature is part of the concept of decentralization
It looks like more or less 60% are already known holders of mined bitcoin, lasts on coinbase prime.

As for the remaining, that's a bit smaller, but knowing how bitcoin adopted regulation for it to "mainstream" globally, i guess it will be smaller on few years to come.

44% means wallets that are labeled with the names of large institutions, the rest are individual wallets that cannot be identified by analysis tools, I cannot imagine in the future the bot will be able to read our wallets and continue to label our names, is this possible? Indirectly we consider this is not privacy anymore.
I do not want the ownership of bitcoin in the know a lot of people and agree with the above saying This is the essence of bitcoin.
