I am pretty sure that there was no hardware wallet when Bitcoin was created.
I am now wondering what type of Bitcoin wallet Satoshi Nakamoto used to hold his percentage.

Anyone have any idea? 🤔  Must have been the first old wallets or way.
If Satoshi very own Bitcoin can be sleeping this safely why are we so hellbent on hardware wallets?

It's now looking like storing your Bitcoin in a device that's created by a company isn't a safe way after all.
Now I think Bitcoin-Qt or Bitcoin Core is the best place for our Bitcoin, not hardware wallets.

The first Bitcoin wallet was generated in 2009 if I'm correct, the second was said to belong to Hal Finney, I don't think I will be needing a hardware device if this is how Satoshi Nakamoto kept his own Bitcoin all this while.

You want know about very first and oldest Bitcoin wallets?

My thread can help you with this purpose but I don't recommend you to find and download any old Bitcoin Core version for using. It's always recommended to use most up-to-date versions.
What is your Bitcoin Core version? Tomorrow will be anniversary of Bitcoin v0.1

We don't have to go the same way Satoshi did then, because things aren't the same way as often to this day.

The issue is not having a hardware wallet; you can decide not to get one because it is a choice. All you need is to have your bitcoin on a non-custodial, open-source wallet.

No one is stopping you from running Bitcoincore if you wish to do so.
No one will prevent you from using any hardware wallet if that is your choice.
All you need to do is maintain a high security standard with privacy.

The issue with a hardware wallet is just a matter of preference for the brand and not a loophole in non-custodial storage.

if you like to create a safe wallets you can just setup (or take a long read Roll Eyes ) about the glacier protocol https://glacierprotocol.org/
this can allow to have a cold wallet / or in general could allow to understand deeply all aspects related to security.
personally I would agree with the point that hardware wallet are not essentials, but can be seen as something that has a sense to be used.
anyway, there is an industry behind and a clear interest to try to have this system more and more in bitcoiners pockets.

It's now looking like storing your Bitcoin in a device that's created by a company isn't a safe way after all.

Yes the earliest bitcoin wallet was bitcoin core as it is renamed now and it was what we understand that Satoshi has his bitcoin wallet created from with the possibility of a back up been the wallet.dat file.

Now if you do think that this is the way you wish to go then it’s not bad but let me say that there is nothing like a completely secured wallet although the wallet security varies from each other but majorly every wallet out there as an attack vector primary due to the device they are on.

For example bitcoin core is not just as secure as we would think when you use it as an hot wallet, it is just like other wallets out there with the security challenge coming from how you treat the device on which the core software is on. If such device is used primarily for everyday use like surfing the internet and downloading files be sure to know that it’s prone to malware.

But with bitcoin core you run your own full node and do not trust third party services to verify blockchain informations but this doesn’t translate to ultimate security or a secured wallet.

Many will tell you that for long term wallet storage airgapped wallet are you’re go to. And you do not need hardware wallet to build an airgap wallet some software wallet with and air fall device can do that Perfectly for you and then you have bitcoin core for your watch only wallet running a full node

Satoshi never hold all his bitcoins in a single wallet and it was gathered that his block reward (50 BTC) for mining BTC cut across over 20,000 addresses.
Satoshi is the creator of Bitcoin, he alone knows the technology he used in protecting the Bitcoins that he mined.
Now, before you talk about doing what he did, do you have enough bitcoins to distribute across more than 20,000 addresses? Even if you don't own up to the amount of bitcoins that Satoshi own but if you can be able to spread your bitcoins across many addresses, it will be rare for it to face hacks.

If you run your own bitcoin core full node, you will have more privacy since your addresses and transactions history won't be leaked to other node networks.

Any wallets used by Satosh would probably be too old to be used this time, since developers must have seen through some flaws and limitations that necessitated upgrades to those old versions. Your best bet at protecting your bitcoins should be to read about what's safe this time and use them, even though we know that what's safe today may not be safe tomorrow.

Another thing is to keep abreast of the happenings in the industry to know when you have to update versions that you're currently using.

@OP You should use the latest version of Bitcoin Core, because several fixes and improvements have been included in that version. Let me explain it, briefly.

The Bitcoin Core application is open-source; meaning you can access all of its source code, and there are many contributors ready to help with improvements, if any flaws, or vulnerabilities are discovered. Therefore, I think you should use the latest one. Cmiiw.

You can use any wallet to store your Bitcoins, it depends on you, but there is definitely a reason to use a hardware wallet because of the strong security that exists here. Every wallet is good and suitable and is designed to be convenient enough to use, but if you leave the wallet seed phrase in a random place, it will not provide you with any security.
So the more secure the wallet seed phrase, the more secure your wallet will be and the more secure it will provide you. That is why I say you should keep the wallet seed properly secured.

It seems like a hasty decision to say that a software wallet is safer than a hardware wallet because Satoshi's bitcoins haven't moved. You can only see through the blockchain whether those coins have been transferred. But do you know if the private key is still safe, has been lost, or maybe the owner is not spending them intentionally?
I hope you don't know, so coins untouched and wallet still secure are not the same thing. I don't doubt that Bitcoin Core is a good software, especially for running a full node to verify your transactions. But if the wallet's private key is on a device where the internet is used daily, then there is some risk.

Well, what he did at that time was not because this was the best option available but because it was the only option available. But I can't agree more that his coins are still safe, while those who, God knows what they have done or how much they have searched for ways to protect their coins, end up losing them to such hacks even though they never did anything wrong.

The reason for Satoshi's coins to be safe is very easy. His setup is like an air-gapped cold storage. He must have created a seed phrase on an air-gapped device, and he did not need hardware wallets at all. We can also do exactly what he did. But we are not sure whether he has other coins or uses other wallets.

The main issue is not with hardware wallets. It's with the supply chain and firmware trust in specific companies, so we have to be careful about whom we trust. Even when choosing a device we have had for a long time, it could be tampered with while we create an air-gapped wallet, thinking we are safe now.

Method of storage will always remain a choice, people can only advise you base on their user experience or how secure technology is. Whether it's hardware wallets or using the Bitcoincore wallet which is an open source wallet is your chioce, so you can still decide to store in both storage methods or either use as many storage proces you find useful and secure.

However, the reoccurring attack or the possible compromise of some the hardware wallet is becoming a thing of worry about what lies in the future using this storage method.

Some part of your post is cringe. Technology in what essence? Satoshi used Bitcoin client(used to be Bitcoin wallet, node, and miner) before it was later changed to Bitcoin core. The address are old pay to public keys where bunch of keys are generated with their private keys from wallet database, you will see it as wallet.dat on core unlike the modern wallets we have today where you can generate bunch of keys from a seed and backup seed phrase

Quote
If you run your own bitcoin core full node, you will have more privacy since your addresses and transactions history won't be leaked to other node networks.

Running your node gives you privacy but doesn't save your from your own mistakes. From what OP is asking, he is trying to understand the magic behind Satoshi old wallet addresses and why hackers have not been able to have access to them. You might be surprised that the affect users on the ledger chain supply run full node with their ledger but they got affected because they bought a wallet device from wrongs hands.

I couldn’t help but take not of the way you wrote about the Satoshi percent. It might be misunderstood as the founder having a set out percentage for himself since the creation of Bitcoin which would be wrong. It would be best for people to realize that the founder remained the first and earliest miner and as such, was able to accumulate a great deal of Bitcoin which is still untouched in some wallets from the genesis phase of Bitcoin and that’s what forms the Satoshi percent which isn’t actually a thing.

Now with that out of the way, a lot of users has already debunked the wallet that was used here and how it has changed in versions over the years from Bitcoin Client - Bitcoin Core in today.

However, it’s important to note that, in as much as the coins still remains untouched and fairly secured, upgrades on certain systems isn’t in itself a weakness but, an advancement in safety protocols and an addition of layers of security.

Those that used the earlier version of Cold Card wallets were safe and satisfied with what they got until a couple of months ago. Bitcoin core is safe but, other means to safety should be considered where necessary and based on what advantages they offer against other means to Bitcoin storage and security.

I don't think I will be needing a hardware device
It is optional to own a hardware wallet, many believed that it has additional security but it's not foolproof. During my early days, it's said to be the most secure way of storing bitcoins. But it doesn't look that it is in present due to the recent incidents. Things are changing and bitcoin forever is correct that in the past, it's different. While things are scary these times, I think that everyone will be put into panic if someone cracks on the private keys of satoshi and transfers it to their own. And even if bitcoin core is safe yet the user is careless, the safety that it has is nonsense for that person.

If Satoshi very own Bitcoin can be sleeping this safely why are we so hellbent on hardware wallets?

Satoshi’s bitcoins aren’t the only ones that are safely secured for a long period of time out there. So you don’t necessarily need to copy satoshi’s setup to safely secure your coins.

Your wallet security depends heavily on the level of knowledge you have about how to secure it imo and you don’t necessarily need a hardware wallet to do so.

So I’d advice you to use part of your time to learn a lot about wallet security and how to setup a secured wallet for your bitcoins rather than trying to figure out which way satoshi used to store his bitcoins and copy it..

Hardware Wallets were a lot better when they were mainly focused on offering a safe, idiot proof way of storing Bitcoin.  After they started caring less about making the Bitcoin community happy and more about making money through marketing and Shit Coins, the quality degraded over time for most of them.  The best device is one that does not connect to the Internet at all, and there was the Passport device for that but I honestly did not keep up with all their newest developments to know if that is still the case with their latest models.

But to safely store Bitcoin you simply need that, an offline device no body else other than you have access to.  We do not need to go back to learning how to make a fire in order to cook some meat, my Bitcoin has never been touched by hands of strangers and I am hoping my ways of storing it are going to keep it that way for ever.  It is not rocket science, you only have to actually care.

Bitcoin-Qt
And Satoshi probably didn't go online every day with his wallet.dat file and private key.
He probably stored them on completely offline machine, air-gapped system or encrypted external drive or paper with custom security.

I don't think I will be needing a hardware device if this is how Satoshi Nakamoto kept his own Bitcoin all this while.
You don't necessarily need any hardware device if you can maintain strict offline security yourself, much like Satoshi did.
Get any brand new laptop that will never be connected to internet.
Use Bitcoin Core on it to create offline wallet.
After creating wallet on offline machine, back up your private key and seed phrase on metal plate and paper.
To make transaction, create it on your online PC, transfer it to your offline PC via flash drive or QR code, and sign it there.

Bitcoin-Qt

Satoshi Nakamoto is a founder of Bitcoin and he understands very deeply about importance of privacy and actually has very excellent practice for his privacy.
Satoshi always uses Tor.
Satoshi never deletes his Bitcoin wallets.

Though he always used Tor, as far as I can tell.

Sigh... why delete a wallet instead of moving it aside and keeping the old copy just in case?  You should never delete a wallet.

Most likely combination of Bitcoin Core, paper wallet and offline computers.

But later on, it has evolved so much that we have or someone created a hardware wallet which is thought to be more safe and security is up. That's why it became so prominent in the mid 2014-2015 (Satoshi by that time chooses to go off-grid).

And maybe that's what we thought until the Coldcard incident and then the issue with an authorized reseller surfaces. Yeah, maybe we can go back to the old and traditional way to secure our Bitcoin.
