So for a bitcoin miner to switch to AI "miner", they'll have to get rid of the hardware they own and have made a significant investment in and replace it with other hardware.

@pooya87 you just said it all. One can not just update a software to turn a Bitcoin ASIC miner into an AI processor cause the hardware aren’t same, they are completely different. And again AI data centers do requires expensive cooling and 100 percent continuous power. When electricity gets so expensive Bitcoin miners can easily shut down. What a really see is that when mining do say that they switching to AI they are simply leasing their power contracts and also their land to a big tech companies.

Yes, they still have their ASIC miners, but they can choose not to expand their mining operations.

Some of them are still expanding, meaning their mining operations are still active, while others are shifting their focus to AI data centers and moving their mining rigs elsewhere. Their main focus is now on AI data centers.

Some of these companies are:

According to the 2026 Difficulty Thread by @philipma1957, Bitcoin mining difficulty has already increased, and the latest adjustment was +5.9237%, which is the third-largest percentage increase this year.

So I found this article in our local board and the news is about Genesis Digital Assets, which was one of the biggest Bitcoin mining companies before, but is now slowly turning its mining infrastructure into AI data centers through SWI Group.

So as mining difficulty continues to increase, do you think more Bitcoin mining companies will move to AI data centers?

Even if difficulty keeps increasing, a reasonable mining company will find other ways to remain profitable. Such as going hybrid, maybe they can start up a brewery in there, where the heat needed to heat the water to make the beer  will come from the Bitcoin ASIC machine and lots other innovative way to stay profitable. Shifting to ai will be so so expensive.

Difficulty alone is likely not something that will make mining companies change their focus to ai, since it can go up and down, depending on network conditions. Personally, I think companies will consider halving to be more of a significant challange that will make them to consider transitioning into other industries (including ai) than difficulty. Because if bitcoin price does not go as espected in the coming years, mining companies might not be making enough profits because of reduction in block rewards and in such a situation, some will definitely transition to other industries to remain operational and more profitable.

The way some companies rushed to joined mining and later fold up is same way people that rush AI will later stop because some people change means of income once they see bubbles and they don't last. If any mining company leaves, onew miners are going to join. If old ones leave, the blocks will only take an average of 14 days and if difficulty is adjusted, the rest will be doing the work. It will even open opportunity for more miners that want to mine Bitcoin.

It's even norma when miners leave during the bear market. Some unplug their miners during the bear market due to cost and price of Bitcoin and resume when the price is fair to cover the cost of production. The AI might not be a reason to leave a profitable business to start over another bubble you are not sure about.

Bitcoin difficulty was 155.97 T in November 2025.
Bitcoin difficulty is 140.58T right now, still 10% of the peak a year ago!

Yeah right...
And suddenly the world will rin twice as much beer cause miners now help the brewing.
Rockdale is 563 MW, the largest single brewery in the world burns 40MW for the entire process, including bottling and packaging.

Switching hardware is a big commitment, it is not something they can undo if it didn't work out. So the AI sector has to show a solid future for them to make that commitment.

Yes you are completely right, there is no ASIC to GPU conversion going on. Nobody is going to use a SHA256 ASIC for AI. I do not think that is what Core Scientific is doing (or able to do for that matter).

However I disagree that there is little "insurance" open to larger miners. Core Scientific for instance has signed 12year dollar based contracts with CoreWeave for their AI Data Center business. Core Scientific is basically acting as landlord and CoreWeave will be funding the equipment costs required directly (rather than Core Scientific) in return for usage inside of Core Scientific power area. In total these contracts are ~$6.7B USD of estimated total revenue for Core Scientific over the next 12years.

This may or may not be profitable in big picture of AI, but regardless Core Scientific is set to make on average hundreds of millions per year off these contracts. I think this mixed business model is mostly available to larger miners (MARA, Core Scientific, Hut8 tier) who have the skills, spare power capacity and good locations that AI tech giants want. Not sure a smaller miner is in a position to do such a thing.

Shifting does not mean they will convert their equipment, of course they will sell it and buy equipment that is fit for AI data centers. They are likely leaving the business but they will let other businesses that still want to continue mining take over. They might sell at a cheaper price but if they calculate it well and see that their proceeds are more than enough to start AI data centers then they will probably take the risk since the potential of AI is bigger compared to the use of bitcoin since it's only for less than 10% of the population while AI is for everyone.

AI definitely consumes more energy than Bitcoin mining is going right now even if the government and investors don't want to agree to that because of the potential profit margin they stand to make. However, it doesn't mean Bitcoin mining would die off completely because it's still a very much evolving currency of value that is still needed.
AI seems to tackle more real world problems in almost every sector and that's why there a shift into that sector despite the energy cost, but it's more of a profitable investment and less disturbed infrastructure by the government as we see with not as rigid regulatory policies against it.

What do you want to hear, No? None of us are in a position to answer this question because none of us here a stake in any of these mining companies or have an influence over their decision. Majority of them were in the business of Bitcoin mining because of the profits and not the passion so if AI data centers is the new gold. you'll see them moving over there and try to make the most money they can before that sector gets difficult too.

If the current companiea like they all leave, we'll get never ones and maybe the sector will get less centralized and more welcoming to individual miners. At this stage of Bitcoin development, I don't think we should care anymore when theae companies choose to leave because they're benefiting more than adding any value to the adoption of Bitcoin.

I don't care what they do as I have come to the understanding that the industry will keep advancing irrespective of who stays or leaves so they can do what they feel works best for their business.

Many of these mentioned company seems to be able to secure deal or leases before pivoting, not all mining company can do that which maybe the reason why some company decided to decommission their mining farm. The keyword is deal and lease, otherwise anybody else might be better off to keep using their ASIC miners and continue to mine. Frankly, if a mining company get offered tens of billions to create AI data center, hard to say the company wouldn't take it. A good opportunity to secure place in compute intensive world and to scale your company to be bigger.
